Pocket Tennis Color Review

Pocket Tennis Color is a good little tennis game.

Tennis is one of those second or third tier sports in the world of videogames. There used to be a few tennis games here and there, but no one really puts them out anymore. Pocket Tennis Color is a return to simplistic, NES-style sports gaming, and in fact, plays like a slightly more sophisticated version of Nintendo's own 8-bit classic, Tennis.

The game has an exhibition mode for quick games, as well as a tournment mode for players looking for a bit more depth. Several tennis players are available for selection, each one rated in speed, power, and defense. There are five different courts in the game.

The game's AI is as simple as its gameplay, so the computer players really don't pose too much of a challenge. Rushing the net off the serve seems to work best, forcing the computer to act fast to get to the ball - and it usually won't be able to keep up for more than three or four volleys. A two-player link mode is also present.

Pocket Tennis Color is a good little tennis game. It isn't big on the simulation front, but there's definitely some short-term fun to be had. Definitely recommended if you were a fan of the older tennis games on the NES.
