Co-founder of social gaming house says company working on new cloud technology that could bring FarmVille, Words With Friends to Microsoft's console.
FarmVille and Words With Friends could come to Microsoft's Xbox platform, if comments made by Zynga co-founder Mark Pincus are any indication. The man behind the social gaming powerhouse told GigaOM recently that it is creating a cloud-based technology that would support game saves on a range of platforms, one of which is the Xbox.
"Right now we are building back-end technology so that your game state can be saved and served up in different screens/devices," he said. "The interaction cues will take from the different devices. In other words, you can play a game on a computer and call it up on Xbox and you resume from the point you left off, except the gameplay will now be customized for the Xbox controller."
Zynga has not officially announced any plans to bring its suite of social games to Microsoft's Xbox platform, and as of press time, the publisher had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.
San Francisco, California-based Zynga had an up-and-down past year. Its initial public offering had a rocky start in December, with shares tumbling during its first days on the market. The company's shares then surged in February on news that Facebook was planning to go public.
lol I love how people are already quick to condemn this move just because its appealing to the casual market as well. There is a reason why its the most popular console - it appeals to a wide array of audience's. It does not have to just be for the hardcore gamers only - families and people who dont sit around for hours a day playing there fps's and RTS's (with XXXZZZ Pro, Sniper elite, MLG Pro, ITz in there gamer tags) ect can play on their kinect (even have parties and be social), and not worry about ranting and raving about lack of exclusives (who bloody cares...each console has their own for god sake) which seems to consume alot of peoples souls...they can just chill for abit after work, or a night out and play something that isnt for hardcores/people with alot of time/elitists/fanboys. Just embrace it, or just let it go...either way you will get the games you like as well, and developers will keep making hardcore games for your tastes. I seriously think that all you guys moaning who make this such a big deal will be screwed when your in a relationship or just generally go outside lol. Cheers :)
maybe it's not as bad as people make it out to be. maybe these games will be available only through the facebook app on the 360.
@forest4 PC genres have been coming to consoles ever since the 5th generation (original Playstation). FPSes (Doom and Quake), RTSes (Command & Conquer), 3rd person action games (MDK)...were flooding the original Playstation back as far as 1995. It's just that the younger folks (mostly CoD players) are too young to remember -or simply weren't even born yet. So crappy "social network" games coming to consoles ain't a surprise. I ain't gonna buy that crap. But I ain't surprised that it's console bound.
Another reason why I want a new generation of hardware. Game companies wouldn't even consider this crap for the next gen.
I doubt the hardcore xbox gamers would care about this. Zynga should be thinking about Wii U instead.
I'm surprised that Zynga would target the XBOX...seems like their games would be more well-suited to handhelds like the 3DS and Vita, but I guess there are technical limitations that keep them from going there. I'm also surprised by the amount of vitriol toward these games. It's not like anybody's copy of Halo or Gears won't work. If you don't like Zynga games, don't buy 'em...simple.
I can think of so many reasons this is very unlikely to occur, not the least of which is that no one is going to want to actually pay just to access something like Farmville. Free to play or nothing. And given Microsoft's attitude in the past to having anything resembling free game content on Live, what do you think the odds of that happening are? Sounds to me like Pincus was using the term 'Xbox' as an example there, nothing more.
And I thought Nintendo was the Casual game company? Don't compete with that Microsoft, you won't win. Let Nintendo keep hold on that crown, just stay with hardcore for now!
If this happens my xbox will have a new home!!! THE BIN!!! ffs keep this rubbish away from xbox and if it does then ud better take away the 5.99 a month fee as i wont ever pay microsoft to put c**p on my xbox lol
Considering that the Xbox can't really access the internet without a special deal from Microsoft, and that a crappy game + gimped version = fail, I can't really see this happening. Plus, it's really irritating the direction that Microsoft has chosen. The 360 has always been more about the hardcore playerbase and less about the casual, and now Microsoft is switching it around. I don't want to talk to my TV, or flail my arms around. I don't want Facebook and Twitter on my gaming console. I just want to put a disc in, and play my game. No frills, no hassles. And Microsoft seems to have forgotten that.
first kinect now farmville? cant say i approve the direction this is going for 360 gamers. i hope sony doesnt follow down this path, and yes i hate move too.
Can't really see this working outside of social networking/mobile gaming. As long as it's presence doesn't infect my dashboard I'll be okay. I'm already concerned that Eastenders has appeared on my dash since the launch of the iPlayer app.
No, no, no.. please no! Just.... just NOOOO! The fact is, that although i dont like and wont play this milkware, i just dont fancy seeing it plastered all over my Dashboard. So, to cut a long story short.... No!!
... and the next day, the failure rate of 360s skyrockets as consoles start committing mass suicide.
Only in today's age would a person purchase a $400 (I'm guessing that's what the next Xbox will end up being) game system only to play Farmville. smh
microsoft is trageting a wider market now, well as long as they support hardcore gamers I don't mind I will only use the part of the console that I like
Yeah, makes sense, would mix well with this new casual direction Xbox is taking with Kinect.Still,I don't think core 360 gamers will be too happy about this...
Sounds like the natural progression for those Zynga games. It's doubtful that I would ever use my xbox for Words With Friends (since my phone is typically nearby), but variety is the spice of life.
farmville is such a stupid game i got suckered into playing it with two people who are no longer my friends its utterly boring
