ZombiU 2 prototype in development at Ubisoft

"It's too soon to tell you more," says studio creative director.

Work on a prototype for a sequel to Wii U launch title ZombiU is underway at Ubisoft Montpellier, the studio's creative director Jean-Philippe Caro has said.

Speaking on Twitter, Caro said "the team is working hard on a prototype" but that "it's too soon to tell you more."

Since the game's release, Ubisoft has said that one of ZombiU's most warmly received features--permanent death for characters--was almost scrapped by the development team.

Speaking to GameSpot earlier in the year, Ubisoft managing director Xavier Poix said the message behind the Wii U was hard to convey and that it might have led to ZombiU's ukewarm critical reception when the game launched in 2012.

"The whole idea of the asymmetrical gameplay and using two screens to do two very different things is not simple to explain to people," said Poix at the time.

"ZombiU was designed to be a game for core players launching with a new Nintendo console. We should have communicated better in this respect to let people know what kind of experience to expect. It wasn't obvious enough that there would be a new controller and new gameplay and a new skill set to develop."

For more information on ZombiU, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Good news. This game has a lot of room for improvement.

This was an incredible game... true survival horror.  If they can expand and refine what was good about the first one they'll have a triple A title on their belts.  Super excited!

So we'll be able to shotgun zombie Bono to ribbons? SOLD

If Red Steel 2 can be a vastly superior game than the first, then the sequel to Zombi U can be too?

It was actually a pretty sweet game. It definitely lacked in game modes and no online coop was a bit of a buzz kill. Still wouldn't mind seeing a sequel.

Excellent! I hope they can expand on the melee weapons available, and improve upon the combat mechanics a little bit more, and perhaps pump those graphics up a little bit. maybe online co-op only missions would be quite fun as well, giving the levels parts where the characters get split up, so they can still utilise some of the jumpy tricks and what not? Zombi U had great potential, and I don't think its a bad game by a long shot. I would welcome a sequel with open arms.

Here's hoping that the sequel will be better than the first game. ZombiU was okay, but it could have been a lot better.

I'm excited for this. ZombiU was obviously rushed to meet the launch day. I'm a big fan of the concept but the execution left alot to be desired. Red Steel was a victim to this as well for the Wii, and look how well its sequel fared. No pressure, and the success ZombiU received, the sequel could be what the original intended to do and then some.

to me it is still one of the best zombie games out there, very creepy, good game :D and probably one of the funniest infront-of-couch multiplayer experience ever....when we wanna play coop games then we start with zombi u in multiplayer and after 3-4 hours we think about "something else?"....."erm..one round" :D

JayQproductions
JayQproductions

This one will probably go multiplatform, at least I hope it does so they can leave out all the gimmicks and focus on making a decent game because the concept is there but the execution is lacking.

I don't know. I thought ZombiU was mediocre. If they fix the problems of the first game, and don't use the gamepad in the most obvious gimmicky ways, than I'll give the sequel a chance.

While I got bored with the campaign, my nephew and I enjoyed the multiplayer. One person playing zombie master while the other play the survivor was really cool.

I enjoyed it. If they can manage a satisfying fix to the repetitive combat (specifically damage zones to reward me for nailing a zombie's head or the like) then it would be a success in my book.

Well, sequels are to improve this times in videogames. I've seen more than respect in user reviews for this, so they may have the chance to put up something really special.

It got a lukewarm critical reception because it's a lukewarm game.

I mean it's not terrible but it's not really great either.

How about No.  ZombieU was tedious and not fun at all.  The only people that liked it are people who really want to hate on RE6 because they want a survival horror game even if it's terrible and boring to play.  I'll pass.

ZombiU was a good game and a sequel would be awesome. The game needs a lot of work but they got so many things right at the same time. one of the few zombie games that actually encourages you to avoid encounters and survive like it was a real zombie apocalypse.

airboard360
airboard360

I love how optimistic everyone is being. The sequel will have limited connection the original. In that I mean it will basically be streamlined to the point where it is a generic action shooter with zombies. Do you guys honestly believe they will stick with the same formula after the critical and commercial results they received with the original game?

GameBeaten
GameBeaten

@airboard360 I wouldn't be surprised if things turned out that way. One can hope though that they will keep the survival horror vibe.

Loved the first game, great atmosphere and a decent story. Actually made me jump a few times and gave me that creepy SH2 vibe. Second game needs to fix the glitches, add more Melee combat. Also an online co-op would be nice.

BamaGoatt
BamaGoatt like.author.displayName like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 3 Like

@Darkitachi54 I like your idea of adding more melee maybe allow you to upgrade the cricket bat to a pipe or something. As for co-op that could be an issue imagine playing with a bad player that gets killed fast when they turn they kill you from behind. Some form of online play could be tacked on but just don't see co-op as a good move.

Colekern

@BamaGoatt @Darkitachi54 Melee wasn't actually something the devs expected people to use, so my bet is that they improve melee since they know that people actually do use it.

Cool, loving the first game and I can't wait to see what they do with the 2nd one (if it is in fact zu2).  The only thing I really want different this time around is less cricket bat lol.  Other than that, just some tighter graphics and that's really it.  Any other improvements will be welcome.

This is one of the few games I'd actually say go and get it to try it out, it's much better than the reviews give it credit for.  Very fun game, but it's not very easy and I love the perma death, go back and kill the old you to get your stuff mechanic lol.

Ubi just stop Nintendo will react the sooner you stop pumping out mediocre titles for the WIIU, since Ubi is like all the third party support they got.

@mouse314 Did you play Zombie U or are you just a sheep that goes by the reviews?  I was a sheep at first but decided to pick the game up and LOVE it.  It's a lot of fun and is very, very eerie.  They did a great job with the games atmosphere imo.

Sure it has some things that need to be changed for a sequel but none of them were bad enough to warrant such low scores.  Anyways, I need to get back to it and beat it but I really enjoy the game.

@nickpeck36 yeah i did play it me and my friend traded consoles for a week i wanted to try it out before buying it and the game was bad, he also got nintendo land  is just a bunch of party games, and the new new SMB the same crap as the last 2 in WII. i use to be a nintendo fan in the days of gamecube and n64 BTW ETERNAL DARKNESS FTW.

I think that's good news.  A few tweaks to the gameplay so combat isn't so repetitive and a few nips and tucks on that engine and ZombiU 2 could be something special

BamaGoatt
BamaGoatt

@barrybarryk If you did that it would be less fun the game is meant to be a challenge not a how many weapons can I find and kill with arcade bs.

barrybarryk

@BamaGoatt Make it less repetitive and improving the engine != turn it into Dead Island

BamaGoatt
BamaGoatt

@barrybarryk @BamaGoatt I see now you used not equal to just saw the = sign on it lol. I still don't think they need to change much with the game maybe more zombie types will help and adding some form of online tag play would be cool.

barrybarryk

@BamaGoatt I don't want it to be a Dead Island clone either, that's why: I NEVER SUGGESTED THEY DO THAT!

BamaGoatt
BamaGoatt

@barrybarryk @BamaGoatt Well guess I am saying I wouldn't like it being turned into a Dead Island clone more action less difficult to play. All I need is my cricket bat and the prepper and I am good to go on a zombie killing spree.

Hopefully it turns out like Red Steel 2 in terms of the quality jump from the original. Like Red Steel, I felt that ZombiU was fun, but had a lot of flaws that needed to be addressed.

DiamondDM13

I don't think the critical reception had anything to do with the console. If the game is bad, it doesn't matter if it comes out on PS/Xbox/PC or whatever, so long as it sucks, it will still be labeled as such...
