Yu-Gi-Oh! tourney winners emerge

By Patrick Caldwell

Konami crowns US winners at San Diego Comic-Con; four finalists set to travel to Tokyo for world championship.

A three-hour Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament yesterday at the 2006 San Diego Comic-Con decided who would go on to Japan next month for more card-based battling and who would just go home. The tourney, sponsored by Konami, pitted 16 gamers against one another playing Yu-Gi-Oh! WC 2006 for the Game Boy Advance. The winners--from first to fourth place--are Jason Lee, 21, of Oakland, California; Patrick Lewis, 17, of Norwalk, California; Michael Haught, 24, of Finleyville, Pennsylvania; and Brandon Sherman, 13, of Randolph, New Jersey. Each received an assortment of Yu-Gi-Oh! loot from Konami, such as a card set exclusive to the San Diego convention. All four US winners will travel to Tokyo, Japan, for the world-championship matches on August 5 and 6.

Hey, I'm 43 years old and I play the Yu-Gi-Oh games. There is a big difference between being a little kid who watches some kiddie anime show on Saturday morning and someone who likes a good strategic collectible card game. I have never watched the anime. Have no desire, but I love Magic The Gathering and other CCG's. Yu-Gi-Oh WC 2006 for GBA doesn't even have any of the anime characters in it. It is straight up strategy.

ice_rocman your a moron and have no clue what your talking about sitting there saying i contradict myself despite the fact that you repeated what i said and it made perfect sence. Your just mad cuz you have no life. How does it feel when a 16 year old knows more of what he wants in life and has more prioritys then playing some yugioh card game at the age of 20, like the guy you said that probably has a better house and stuff. I doubt his box with a cut out window can qualify as a house. Of course i don't have a house what 16 year old has his own house. You and Lupus64 can sit there and say crap, but it just proves my point. It seems a lot of people know this game is for little kids and you two should grow up. Lupus64 you sit there and talk about how you have a new view on the human race well lets just say i do to last time i checked it was to mature and grow and do something productive with your life. not sit around and play with a bunch of kids who are wondering what a 20 year old is doing playing a yugioh card game with them. I can see if you played it when your 13, but 20 and on that is just sad. Wow they could win some money its got to be the saddest way of doing it and not to mention easy. When i get myself a job i will be happy knowing i earned money the hard way and the American way and not sitting on my butt saying " go blue eyes white dragon."

Yu-Gi-Oh, still bigger then a lot of people think. yeah, it's a little sad.

kayrod29 and you are 14 now? and by the way just WHAT THE HELL IS A 24 and 21 DOING THERE!!!!

Kayrod29 5 pts

Yu-Gi-Oh ... last time I interacted with this thing I was like 13?

I know a group of people, ranging from 15... to 28, 2 of which who are in a wrestling league, who play the WWE (or WWF whichever you prefer) card game. And you... even though I'm out of cards, and digitized video game versions of them, it was pretty fun.

Lupus64 5 pts

Wow, the sheer level of pig-headed flaming I just read has restored my lack of faith in the tolerance of the human race. Thanks Bababowe (and others)! Back on topic, I've played the Yu-gi-oh GBA games, even though I don't play the actual cardgame, and they can be quite a lot of fun. So to those who are saying that the players in the tournament should grow up, just take into account that, wow, some people enjoy different sorts of games. And I haven't just played Yu-gi-oh, I also play Magic: The Gathering and Spycraft, and have no problem with the Yu-gi-oh game, even if I do enjoy the others more. So I would say congrats to the placegetters in that tournamentm for winning what can be a quite skillful game. And guys, remember the old saying... If you don't have something nice to say, don't bother saying it. You'll just make yourself look like an ignorant, bigoted idiot.

Account Killa: Yeah its a video game, but its a video game of the card game XD, plays out exactly the same. And yeah, WE didnt think street fighter tourneys were childish, but there are plenty of people out there who think all games no matter what content is involved are childish. Doest make it so, just like because yu-gu-oh is aimed at children in the west (in japan its aimed at teenagers, they made it more childish in the west) doesnt mean children have the mental cpacity to play at any competitive level. Peace to all the people who didnt flame like morons :) Diablo

Yugioh got boring to me so i switched to the Full Metal Alchemist tcg

account_killa 5 pts

people they did not play a card game, they played a video game. Sure it is based on a card game, but look where you are reading the story GAMESPOT. For those of you old enough it is no different from the street fighter tourneys back in the day, yet no one called them childish. I would like to say congrats to the winners because they played against other players with skill and came out on top

xxfoxmanxx 5 pts

Well, I don't play Yugioh now, but I used to, and honestly it is not as good a game as VS system. The age range for VS system is 18-30 which is roughly the age range of Video games. If anyone doesn't know how to play a card game, just try the "VS system", You'll see how much fun it is to play one.

Orasion_Seiz 5 pts

lucky for those guys going to japan for free. maybe i should start playing yugioh again...

ice_rocman 5 pts

Wow, lol. It's almost funny how many times Bababowe contradicts himself in that post. You're an idiot, and I bet Micheal Haught has a bigger house, better car, and a hotter chick than you. Oh and I doubt she's 13. See what I meant about communication? Idiots don't deserve that right.

VegetaMaelstrom 5 pts

I don't play card games but I realize that there is skill involved just like playing video games or basketball. Whatever floats your boat guys. Don't be so judgemental.

Free trip to tokyo ................I'll take that for being good at yu gi oh. :) Good for them.

Bio_Spark 5 pts

Uh... good for them, I suppose. I honestly was never interested in anything like this, but if they're the best at what they love, more power to 'em. There some things most people (myself included) will always see as freakish and nerdy: Card games, tabletop games, and cosplaying among others. I'll never understand the appeal of any of it, but as for them, it must be their finest moment.

MaChaorules 5 pts

ppl still play yugioh? if your gonna play a tag game least play mtg

ice_rocman 5 pts

Closed minded fools. Someone has something they like and enjoy, and because most of you are immature, self conscious sheep who probably wouldn't be caught dead doing anything the wolves of your society deem as unfitting. I guess you also agree with the jacka** Dj Jason "Cagelicous" who believes anyone playing video games over the age of 17 "has stunted in growth" Oh wait, no you don't, because then you wouldn't be here. Different people, different views. Morons like you don't deserve to communicate with the masses.

diablobasher 5 pts

I see the only morons going "zomgwtf card games am crap" have never played Spycraft, Magic: The Gathering, Legend of the Five Rings, Raw Deal, VS Series or the Lesser ones such as Yu-Gi-Oh, or Duel Masters at all, let alone seriously. It's big competition, yes, a lot of small children play the children aimed ones, but not all of them are aimes at children, let a lone playable by children, forget at a competitive level. All the morons making stupid comments on this thread know nothing about the game, nor how to play at a compettive level or the stress and though involved, much like competitive fighting games, or strategy games, card games require a LOT of thought and strategy to play properly. When i was smaller, i used to play this particular game, but quit when i reached the level of national champ and decided..wtf, this is boring, L5R looks a lot better, played that for a bit, couldnt afford the edition reset, and went back to video games. But ive played everything, MTG/Spycraft/L5R/VS, all of it at some form of tournament level, and no matter what you ignorant people say about card game, its as intense as any competitive videogame, i wont compare it to poker, because of the money involved, and the fact (at least in the case of yu-gi-oh) poker is FAR more complicated, note i said complicated, not more strategic, whether you want to beleive it or not, there is a large amount of strategy involved in both games. Say what you want about people who play card games, but if you want to take the time to activate the brain you were gifted with, you would realise what your saying is moronic, and not say it. On a related note, i do not like yu-gi-oh anymore, as the tournament scene is very corrupt, and when upperdeck took control, they cant make their damned minds up about any of the rulings or errata, as such is very chaotic and unorganised. It was fun until about the 5th set, then they clearly ran out of ideas and started reprinting everything, and needlessly banning things. I'll take L5R or Spycraft over this anyday. Diablo

stop hating. yugioh is a cool thing, and being gamers i would think that most of you guys who are criticizing them would be the ones that would think twice before judging somone. quit being dicks. open your minds.

KoruKinshi 5 pts

Well it's quite simple, really...people love to complain about that which they can not achieve. In this case, it's victory and prize money/items. And how dare you be so judgmental on those who do what they enjoy. At least if you were beating on a FF fan boy, that would be justified.

Silence_XO 5 pts

Wow thats sad, I was expecting more 12 and 14 year olds.

I bet if these guys win a couple of grand from winning the championship they would be the ones laughing, and not giving a sh*t what idiots like you people think of them.

DirtyHarry1015 5 pts

people playing with cards above the age of 10? pathetic. the only card games people above 10 should be playing are all forms of poker.

:| WOW...i cant believe it... its just .. so LAME...!!

deadruler08 14 pts

I sincerely agree. Yugioh is old and for children. When I was thirteen I loved Yugioh. Now I'm seventeen and I couldn't care less. Honestly the only action that 21 year old winner gets is from his yugioh cards. Please people get a life...

LorenaLarue 5 pts

Blah! I use to do card battles, not Yugioh but other ones. Got way too expensive though I couldn't afford it no more. Also I felt a little cheated that I was paying so much money for thin pieces of card, though the art was good I still felt cheated.
