Yakuza 4 mobbing North America, Europe, spring 2011

By Eddie Makuch

Sega confirms localized PlayStation 3 exclusive headed West; game will feature four protagonists with intertwined stories.

First announced at the Tokyo Game Show in 2009, the fourth installment in the Yakuza series will lose its Japanese exclusivity next year when Sega brings it West.

Yakuza 4 sold 560,000 units in Japan since it released there as Ryu ga Gotoku 4, and that proved substantial enough for it to warrant a debut in the West. Sega today announced that it will bring the title to North America and Europe in spring 2011.

In this latest installment, main character Kazuma Kiryu is joined by equally pugnacious combatants Masayoshi Tanimura, Shun Akiyama, and Taiga Saejima. Each of the four main characters has a distinct narrative, with each backstory carrying a connection to the game's Tojo clan.

Sega localized Yakuza 1, 2, and 3 but elected to skip the Westward migration process for series spin-off Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan!, which released in Japan in 2008.

The yakuza 4 demo is awesome. The only bad thing is the yakuza 4 graphics that are awesome now will be outdated by 2011. If you want to sample the demo just open a playstation sub account in japan to download the demo. By 2011 I will probably be busy with the 3rd sequel to the best game ever made. Deus Ex the conspiracy

I'll have to try the demo. I wish SEGA would bring on Shenmue 3 already for the 360. I hate unfinished series.

Never saw what th hype was for this game. The game has received lukewarm reviews from most journalist. Not sure how westerner will accept this game. Have any of these games ever sold over 1 million in the U.S.?

@thisranks No one cares if you don't want to buy this game. Those of us who prefer the subtitles with the original vo far outweigh the people that want it dubbed in english. Sony is not going to waste money on something that will only gain them a few purchases. And why are you on this board anyway? By your logic, you didn't play Yakuza 3 so why would you be interested in the 4th?

Ya know what- I hope SEGA does give us a full game... That way, when the sales STILL bomb all you weebos can finally shut up. Why should they have to give you a full game. They've taken plenty of losses with this game. "Oh, but they don't market the game, so it doesn't sell well." WRONG! The Yakuza series has enough content to sell itself. Its the collective ignorance of this Western buyers, and obsessive ingrates like yourselves that bring the game down.

Aw hell-to-the-yeah!! Damn, it's about time Sega finally got on the ball about being quicker w/ their localizing and whatnot of the Ryu ga Gotoku/Yakuza series! Even though I know I'm still gonna get the import for now, I can't wait to get this one too (like I've done w/ all the other US releases). :D @thisranks, well I'm so sorry you feel that way and you're gonna miss out on awesome series (simply b/c you don't want to do a bit of reading...). But frankly to be honest, it's not a point of 'catering to one specific group of gamers' more than it being the fact that not every game is simply suited for certain types of VA. And this series--with it's heavy nods and references to specific Japanese subculture (i.e. the Yakuza)--is one of them. The first game actually did have English VAs and you know what happened?? It damn near doomed any of the other titles from that series ever making it over here. Why? Simple, most people that played it (myself included and I am a huge fan of the series since the first) though they may have liked/loved it still had to cringe at listening to the bad forced 'coolness' of English VAs that took on the roles (only props I will give to is the guy who did Kiiryu's voice and for Mark Hamil's pretty bangin' voicing of Majima). Not to say English VA don't work well for some games (a lot actually I don't mind); but then there are some that are just suited better to leaving the audio in tact.

stevenugent83 Posted Jun 9, 2010 4:58 am ET @ shani_boy101 I would like to bet money that they will, why hire people to do the translated voices than absolutely noone wants when they can just add subtitles! the first one was the only one that had english voices and they were poor! No English VA means no purchase. I'm not going to support titles that cater to one specific group of gamers. Anyone who believes absolutely no one wants English VA is living in la-la land.

YES!!! Its coming out!! Awesome. I'm so glad the petition ninnies didnt derail Yakuza 3 sales, thus costing us 4. Yakuza 3 sold nearly a quarter million copies. Thats good by Sega standards.Im still trying to platinum trophy Yakuza 3. They are leaving the hostess clubs in Yakuza 4 this time, so we can avoid all the division and melodrama that happened March 9.

Hopefully they won't cut so much out of this one. This is great news

@sephirothsfan02 It seems that a certain someone has forgotten about Koei's games, Ninja Gaiden and it's spinoffs, Genji - etc.

I just #@$!% my pants. Here's hoping they won't remove any content in the localized version... and here's BIGGER hoping that Sega will give it the promotional attention it deserves!!

nice but they never gave me the one I wanned to play the most "Ryu Ga Gotoku" what`s up with japanese devs thinking westerners don`t like samurai games!?

Nice!!! Yakuza 3 was so awesome and fun. Can't wait to buy 4, it's going to be epic!

OJ_the_LION
OJ_the_LION

I'll look into it if they don't remove anything from it. I wanted to play 3, but I also didn't want to send Sega the message that I was ok with them neutering exports, so i didn't buy it. If they confirm they aren't doing it for this one, i'll buy 3 to tide me order and preorder this. Confusing logic now that I think about it, but I'm comfortable with it

NeleNel

At least the turn around for the localization is faster than it was with 3. I'll admit I never got a chance to play the first 2 Yakuza games, but I see I was sorely missing out, can't wait for 4.

GREENSLIPPERS
GREENSLIPPERS

if they dont cut anything from 4 like they did with 3. eventhough it didnt take much from the story there really is no reason they should have removed the content from the game, and most of the stuff removed from 3 was in the first 2 anyway. but 4 should be good nonetheless.

TheCyborgNinja

The success of 3 confirmed this well in advance. I imported both 3 and 4 at their respective launches, and found them to be pretty awesome. I'm glad 4 is making its way here now so everyone can enjoy it. It's the best one in the series.

Well, at least SEGA hasn't given up on Yakuza. Still, hope they give us the full game this time, as opposed to cutting corners like they did with Yakuza 3.

Thank you SEGA, this is great news. Awesome, I was worried this series would be left in Japan.

electro57

If they do this, it better be the complete version from Japan. SEGA did a disservice to the fans by removing much of Yakuza 3's content before coming to America. Shame on SEGA.

maximumbarmage

Wow, that is seriously fantastic news. I guess Yakuza 3 must have been a success after all, despite Sega's misgivings about releasing it outside Japan for so long. Good to know, as it was a really good game, and Yakuza 4 sounds better still. Shame they're making us wait a full year for it of course, but it's better than nothing I guess.
