E3 2011: 2K Games reveals that the first-person action reinvention of classic sci-fi series will arrive in early 2012; new trailer inside.
Last June, 2K Games offered a 2011 launch window for its reboot of the XCOM series. Today, the Take-Two Interactive publishing label revised that broad release window, announcing a new release date for the sci-fi action game: March 6, 2012. Developed by 2K Marin, the title is in the works for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. It has not yet been rated.
A "reimagining" of the franchise, which had previously focused on a turn-based strategy format, the new XCOM is billed as a "tactical action experience" by 2K. The game is set in a superficially idyllic 1950's America, which is beset by an insidious alien invasion. Players will assume the role of Special Agent William Carter, who is tasked with leading a team of government agents to root out and battle the extraterrestrials.
In terms of gameplay, XCOM will see players take on missions all over the US to track down and wipe out the aliens. This will be done via first-person combat; first with human firearms from the period, but later with experimental weapons based on extraterrestrial technology. As outlined in GameSpot's preview from 2010, players can also go on side missions to collect an energy-rich mineral to power the alien armaments. In addition, they can snap photos of the alien-caused carnage to further research the otherworldly foes.
@Gelugon_baat Thanks for the info! I missed it, thought JA was finished.. good to know there are still a lot of gamers who can't let this game go :) Loved the first X-COM, and prefer it to follow the same formula... sure go ahead and do a spin-off shooter... but give us the meat first!!
its sad that out of all the 360 temp exclusives that go to PS3, we barely get any of their good ones...
Let's face it; we're all looking for a modernized remake of the original, and we ain't gonna get it. It's amazing how well the first one has aged, though, and it's like 75 cents on Steam. You can't go wrong.
Oh, and the soldiers you would equipt were the best. That was fun :D. The whole killing spaceships and that were secondary. The main focus was on getting your troopers ready for combat. And I remember them looking like Space Marines :D
so this is gonna be some sort of XCOM Enforcer?? Coz that was a shooter. and it was pretty good... but it was more like a quake shooter, fast paced and brutal. I remember the first XCOM to be XCOM Apocalypse... the one where you had to buy a base then buy all sort of air fighters, tanks and equip your soldiers that you would send to kill aliens investing houses, kill the spaceships and kill everything... and it was a RTS and a turn-based game... not this. That is what I want.
Lol....this is not x-com in anyway but name. Another good ip goes down the drain. I miss x-com apocalypse's cultist, poppers and giant space ships that spit death and destruction.
i actually was hoping that they were actually going to do the original X-Com system , having the whole planet and planting and building bases, intercepting the aliens and researching etc and NO story, just what you make of the gameworld. BUT having a squad based 1st person action experience with 8 soldiers and tanks at your disposal when you zoom into the designated infested area, thats randomised each and everytime you go into an area like the original X-Com. Like Rome Total War but with an FPS element when zooming into the map. But i guess dreams are free.
This is one of those games that I really want to be good, but I just don't see it happening :/
Fallout 3 was great and they handled the transition to a real time first-person perspective brilliantly. So I'll keep an open mind about XCOM, but lets be real. 2k Games is NO Bethesda, and this trailer isn't doing them any favors.
@cr8ive nope, most likely a FPS Syndicate (please NO!). Anyway, I guess it could be fun seeing the XCOM world from a FPS perspective, but I think the Apocalypse style top down city would have looked awesome in 3D and could have still been incorporated into this game (maby it still might?).
I do not see how a classic turn based strategy/RPG could be successfully changed to a no brains FPS. I believe all the other Xcom after apocalypse tried space sim and FPS and failed horribly. FO3 was different because the FO franchise has a storyline that a FPS can follow, Xcom does not, the first three were not connected by story, it is simple R&D, base and army building, and strategy fighting. The feeling you normally get from the old xcom, the thrill and fear of the undiscovered map, the music and the fact that you could not see aliens until they were right in front of you is pretty much gone with a FPS where you can see every thing your eye can, there's no real surprise unless they are hiding behind something. And from that video the aliens were not even real aliens, just possessed humans or human looking aliens.
@deathstream After releasing this garbage, they will not be able to go back to the games roots because they are changing the game too much. Not just the gameplay, but the story. Any newbie that comes to the franchise with this game will expect future games to follow the mythos of this game (which is completely rediculous and shows that the developers know NOTHING of the original game). So, therefore, even if they do a strategy game in the vein of the original, it will be nothing like the original game. They have effectively raped the fans of X-COM.
God... What have they done to one of the best games I ever played... I want XCOM Enemy Unknown back...
Hearing rumblings about Fallout 3 now. Listen, I've been gaming for 20 years and have never been as addictive or immersed in a game until Fallout 3. It's the game that made me a fan of RPG's and one of the finest games ever made. I've never put even a quarter of the ammount of time spent in Fallout 3 than any other game. Except maybe L.A. Noire which took about 50 hours.
LoL @ everyone who thought this would remain exclusive. I've been saying months the reason for no updates was because they decided to do PS3 port upfront instead of waiting. This game will rule given it's by the BioShock 2 creators. 2012 is lookimg amazing will this and all the other brilliant games hitting like Mass Effect 3, BioShock: Infinite, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Prey 2, Darksiders II, Inversion, MGS: Rising, Prototype 2, WET 2 and hopefully Half-Life 3 plus Doom 4. The reason for an immediate PS3 release vs. timed exclusive? Because of all the whiny farts out there who are afraid of change. 2K saw this and realized they'd make more if it was released on all platforms upfront. Thank god for whiny farts!
Obviously they turned the combat part in FPS to capture the big popularity in this genre, just hope they haven,t dumbed the strategy too much in the other parts of game.
XCOM fans, try to be hopeful. Maybe 2K is launching it as an FPS to re-introduce it to modern audiences and has plans for a PC strategy title if it hits big. Maybe not, but the glass COULD be half full.
Hmm they must have scrapped everything they had and started again? I'm sure i've seen some gameplay footage knocking around somewhere?
If this game was its own unique IP, it might prove interesting. However, they took the original concept of X-COM, and completely butchered all of its gameplay elements only to put their own convoluted sense of what makes X-COM (or the biggest money maker). I understand franchises change over time, but 2K really didn't change it for the better. They changed it for the worse. Now all the best the original X-COM fans can hope for are new IP's that are made in the spirit of X-COM and hope they do a better job than 2K can ever imagine.
I thought this title was suppose to be an exclusive to the 360, but ah well I guess it a good thing money wise I guess for 2k games and Take-Two and this game still looks awesome.
Glad its coming out next year. This year is already way too full, though next year is shaping up well also with this, Bioshock Infinite and Mass Effect 3
@ ToTs_00 I made the comparison between XCOM and Fallout 3 because i noticed people weren't happy with the way they were taking the series. I don't agree with the arguments you made about "natural evolution" and whatnot. How is taking a great game with isometric turnbased gameplay and a great story and turn it into a bad fps/bad rpg with a unbelievable world filled with uninteresting badly written characters? This is all my opinion of course. I know a lot of people enjoyed fallout 3 and i have nothing against that. It's just that it doesn't contain anything from the older series which i grew up loving. So the arguments you made could be made with xcom instead of fallout 3 in your sentences and i would feel it fitting. Again, opinions are opinions. The main point here is that i felt very disappointed with the way bethesda went with the fallout series and i am sorry for all the xcom fans out here as well, because i can relate. My intention wasn't to start a game vs game feces throwing competition so peace out.
Why people comparing this to Fallout 3? Fallout 3 was just a natural evolution of the Fallout franchise. This on the other hand is using the name XCOM to get more people to buy the game and has nothing to do with the series at all.
The PS3 & 360 are still going strong while the Wii aint getting no kind of press lol. The Project Cafe better be all that!
Oh, great. After all this poor franchise has been through over the years, now it's being subjected to a console port. Yeah, I'll pass. Yet another glaring example of how the console platform is ruining PC gaming.
All X-Com fans really want is a direct port of the original with updated graphics, audio, and modern hardware and OS support. I wouldn't mind online turn-based PvP support, either.
Somehow I don't think anyone will buy this. It's looking way too generic, has nothing to do with the XCOM I know and the name sounds too retarded by today's standards for its own good.
Maybe they'll show more of X-Com at E3........ The game sounds interesting, I never did get a chance to play the original but that's par for course anymore.

It's not going to change the fact that they're not going to swindle me out of money for gameplay that completely disregards the originals.
This game will be epic hands down. Considering the team behind it and what I've seen so far I have no doubt that it will be excellent. I love the idea of being an agent investigating and fighting aliens in the 50's. First person action with strategy mixed in, it couldn't get any better, but then I've never been a big fan of the RTS games, I would only ever play them if they had a very good story.
Oh My, what is wrong with GAME MAKERS THESE DAYS!! This game is going to bomb, just giving everyone a heads up. X-Com is a Turn Based Strategy and they should of grown on that, with an updated Engine and All the Do Da's. ....its so frustrating!!!!!!!

Ok there was alot of xcom games made one was even an FPS xcom enforcer i think cant remember if it did well then there were the UFO games in which aftermath and aftershock where great and afterlight was a joke they were RTS tho but this is just wrong cant see this game being a hit if it spits in face of all the fans:(
This game should have the same management as in X-COM series (equipment research/trades, societies diplomacy and alien influence over them, squad management, good interface of the entire city to deploy the teams, vehicles and others), with the engagement in FPS with your squads in random scenarios, as it were! (Hope they could read me!)
