@PodXCOM "I think they are just adding more levels to make it 7-8 hours." 7-8 hours, that still pretty poor most half decent games have at least 20 hours and big titles like Skyrim 60 hours. "They talk as if there will be strategy, but they don't really go into detail" You think their giving us the old poltical spin.Tell us what we want hear and then give us nothing.
Publisher hurt by dearth of new releases during July-September quarter, but beats expectations; Grand Theft Auto franchise ships 114 million.
Take-Two didn't have any major releases during the July-September period, and that fact was reflected in its second-quarter earnings report today. Beating company expectations, overall revenues for the quarter came in at $107 million, and Take-Two posted a net loss of $47.3 million.
Those numbers are well off of Take-Two's performance during the same period a year ago, where profit hit $8 million on revenues of $245 million. That quarter, of course, was bolstered by the release of 2K Czech's Mafia II, Firaxis' Civilization V, and the continued strong performance of Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption.
Today's earnings announcement also revealed a delay. Previously scheduled for a March 6 release, 2K Marin's XCOM has been pushed out of Take-Two's current fiscal year. The game is now expected to ship sometime between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013.
Catalog sales and digitally delivered content propped up Take-Two's earnings during the period. The publisher saw the best performance out of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, as well as Red Dead Redemption, Borderlands, Sid Meier's Civilization V, Midnight Club Los Angeles, and NBA 2K11.
Calling L.A. Noire its "most successful new release" during its current fiscal year, Take-Two said the Team Bondi-developed game has now shipped 4 million units. Other games released this year that have performed well for Take-Two include Nicktoons MLB and MLB 2K11.
Take-Two also provided a number of other game shipment updates. Gearbox's Borderlands franchise has now shipped more than 5 million units, while Firaxis' Civilization series has shipped nearly 11 million units worldwide. The Red Dead franchise is now up to 13 million units.
With Grand Theft Auto V announced late last month, Take-Two also said that Rockstar's crown jewel franchise has now shipped more than 114 million units.
For its full fiscal year, Take-Two still expects to post a profit, thanks to upcoming releases such as Max Payne 3 and The Darkness 2. However, Take-Two did say that it is facing headwind with NBA 2K12, due to the professional basketball league's ongoing lockout. Still, that title is performing within expectations, according to the publisher.
@Arch-Stanton -"4-5 hours of game play looks pretty pitfull for 2K and Xcom."- Well, they said they have at least more then 4 hours of gameplay, So I think they are just adding more levels to make it 7-8 hours. -"No strategy , that's to bad I thought the negative feedback from the fans of the original xcom mite have change their tact"- I actually thought they may try to add strategy, but then I saw this new interview: http://www.elecplay.com/all/previews/xcom-interview-morgan-gray/ They talk as if there will be strategy, but they don't really go into detail, and they are saying the same things as before.
@PodXCOM Feel free to bug me anytime. No strategy , that's to bad I thought the negative feedback from the fans of the original xcom mite have change their tact.4-5 hours of game play looks pretty pitfull for 2K and Xcom.
@Arch-Stanton The weird thing is: I was going to reply to you about this topic anyways, but for some reason I thought I would be bugging you. Don't know why I thought that. :P Well, I don't think they are going to add strategy game play, becaues of this bit of news: http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/20/rumor-2k-marin-in-australia-hit-by-layoffs/ I also heard that they only had 4 to 5 hours of gameplay, and when you add the 15 layoffs, it doesn't seem like they are doing so good. I think at this point they can only fix some bugs and add some levels.
@PodXCOM Do you think that 2K are delaying Xcom because of financial woes or to try to fix the game a bit better with some more strategy game play?
@Gelugon_baat They can rehyphen when they release it later.Lots of A listed games released recently so they would have struggle to get decent sales anyway.
@Brokenhope69 You like classic strategy games turned into generic FPS games.? Most gamers like myself are spitting chips over that.Just hope that their delay mite be to put some good strategy into the game to make it more interesting.
Sucks. I've been dying to get this since it was first announced way back when. I hope it's not delayed for too long. It's going to be brilliant since 2K Marin are making it. They did make BioShock 2 after all. Also getting Syndicate on Day 1.
That's the second delay, sounds like internal problems with the game's projected popularity. Games now need to be strong in terms of how well they are going to sell the money thrown at bad concepts in the past can doom a company today. Look at the recent sinking of Silicon Knights... I personally think this FPS X-COM idea isn't going to work, from what i've seen i wouldn't really want to drop $50+ on the game shown to date. They changed the first version significantly from shooting black blobs of oil to actually having something resembling an Alien, now they are probably redoing it again. The idea was doomed from the start, you can't take a Turn-Based Strategy game and turn in into an FPS, why not throw in some Kinect while they are at it too! FTW
1. Find a old, neglected, but loved game franchise 2. Make it an FPS 3. ????? 4. Profit! Fallout universe + Oblivion engine = Fallout 3 X-com will be a Fallout 3 clone, which sounds really boring to me. Sigh, Doom clones in the 90's, Fallout clones in the 2010s. I predict this game will not live up to the hype, but I hope I am wrong.
Guys, start from scratch, and make a real time strategy revival of X-COM, just like it's always been. 'K? Same time next week.
Oh no! That means I'm going to have wait longer for a game that I'll never, ever play...... this game is a travesty to the name.
Best if they lose some more and cancel XCOM so 10 years later someone with a clue can grab its naming rights.
I don't care so long as they take their time in making it good and don't turn it into another Assassin's Creed.
Well, that's just bummer. From the gameplay video, it looks like a really nice story-driven FPS mash-up. The 60s vibe looked great. Disclosure: I'm a huge fan of the original X-Com series and still I don't give a damn that this one's not a TBS *or* true to the X-Com "story". If I wanna get all teary-eyed and melancholic, they're all available in my Steam library.
When I heard they were making a FPS version of XCom instead of something turn based/rts, I wondered why they didn't just create a new Intellectual Property. Most anyone who's ever been a fan of the originals won't even give this one the time of day.
Take all the time you need on that X Com title...20 or 30 more years sounds like a great new target release date.
2K does make good games but XCOM didn't appealed to me ever, it looks like a stupid shooter something like Wolfenstein and\or singularity back in the day. I won't expect any good sales as far as what they have shown it will be a disaster. They need good marketing to at least make us understand what the hell it is and show us some jaw dropping or at least oh snap moments, so we can be interested. Glad they delayed it, we need more marketing for the title, if it's any good
@pszone I think they delayed it so they can focus on launch of Darkness 2 and Max Payne 3 early next year
@thorburne The reason is simple, Civilization is a loveable franchise in the world of PC, console sales s*** big time. XCOM is an almost dead IP it's very hard to make a new solid Tactical IP (Which also sells well) because people don't adopt to new IPs e.g Sid Miers and Sims are best sellers whereas some other ips like spore didn't sell well despite being good. It's hard making sell a good puzzle, adventure or RTS nowadays, the old ips are holding with time but for new ips these are tough genres
Cant say im too upset due to the single fact its not ever a true Xcom game. just a cheap & hollow cash in like syndicate.
why the hell they are going to screw a amazing game, with a FPS experience? we already have a LOT of options in that gender, but nearly none like X-com. listen to the people. and make a real remake of the game.
For the reasons of pure sacrilege against the original UFO defense, I hope this game get's status: CANCELED!
Since its not going to be like the X-Com series and just another shooter, take all the time you need, as I will not be interested in it.
thats a bummer! I just hope it comes out around summer time next year. WAY too many around THIS time of year! YIKES!!! what to play???
Well Since Take Two own rights LA Noire. Xcom been push some how because gta5 the game what they been working on since gta4 was reasle. Scops game from Take Two no where to be seen since pp for getting about the game whats also done by Take Two. So know really GTA5 and bioshock reboot they hope to realse by next year. from them
"The game is now expected to ship sometime between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013." Well, I'm glad they're not giving us another one of those vague release dates :P If this were being developed by an external studio, I'd expect a 'Cancelled' announcement to eventually follow.
Funny... they said that they mutilated the X-COM franchise because tactical strategy games are not viable... yet Civilization V is one of their most productive releases!
I guess that gives everyone a chance to play Xenonauts turn based strategy game instead of a X-com FPS
At first this game sounded amazing when it first got announced. Now I'm kinda put off by what I've seen. Hopefully 2k will make sure the game is on par (gameplay/graphics/control) with the games that have just been released (BF3, MW3, Rage)
@otaviogalileu No, but coming from someone that knows X-Com, XCOM is nothing like it's predecessor in any way possible. So it's a fail in name, story, setting, visuals, audio, and much more. Gameplay wise I cannot say, but it's definitely not X-Com.
Im keeping an eye on this game. It looks different, which is a good thing in todays market of CoD and Madden.
Darn, I guess I was one of the few looking forward to XCOM...drew some similarities to Bioshock in terms of it's potential for interesting storytelling. Oh well, do whatever you gotta do to make sure it's right.
*Classic games to modern FPS* Just a few. Command & Conquer Renegade=Works Fallout 3=Works Deus Ex:HR=Works Syndicate=Most likely will work XCOM=Completely disastrous failure.
X-Com never looked any good to begin with. I have no interest in that game. It won't be a big seller.
you know i heard of this SOOOO long ago and with no news since just the titles announcement im beginning to think its a hoax or they have stapled every employees mouth shut
It's going to get worse for 2K, they don't have anything on the roster for release the rest of 2011, everything is slated 2012 or TBA 2012 and beyond....... Maybe GTA, RDR and LA Noire will hold them until next year but I wouldn't bank on it.....truth is this situation probably won't kill 'em but by next year they'll be hurting for a release.
Agree with others in the thread. Bad decisions and now delays = loss profits. Not very smart considering the licenses they have and what they could be doing. Do they seriously expect to make big profits living off old releases and re-releasing old releases with DLC for $49.99? I don't think so. LA Noire is not worth $49.99 right now. Crazy company.
