Xbox 360 update producing disc-read errors

Microsoft offering to replace consoles impacted by recent firmware update; problem unrelated to ongoing beta or upcoming new disc format.

Microsoft recently issued a minor firmware update for the Xbox 360 that is causing problems for a limited number of the consoles. According to a statement provided to GameSpot, Microsoft has "become aware of an issue that is preventing a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs."

The problem causes users to receive a "disc unreadable" or "disc unsupported" error after inserting a disc into the console. According to Microsoft, it is caused by "a change in the disc reading algorithms in a recent software update and is not specific to older or newer versions of Xbox 360." Those suffering from the error should contact Microsoft through www.xbox.com/support/contact so the company can verify if the console has been impacted via Xbox Live. If the problem is confirmed, owners of ailing 360s will receive complimentary new units.

One thing that Microsoft is adamant is not causing the disc-read errors is the ongoing beta that is laying the groundwork for an upcoming new disc format. That update doesn't go live until later in the week, possibly as early as tomorrow.

"The console replacement plan that is the subject of some of today’s headlines is related to a previous update, NOT the system update that has been in public beta and will be deployed shortly," said Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb in a statement. (Emphasis in the original.) "The new disc format that is part of the beta has been rigorously tested across all Xbox 360 models and there are no known compatibility issues."

Since the update I got a problem with my 360 reading Reach and the multiplayer disc from ODST. They told me my games were pirated... They're completely legitimate copies. I hate M$'s customer service... This kind of thing just reminds me why I bought a PS3.

Im gunna try and get a free console because the update didn't do anything to my console but! I placed in a lego indiana jones and it said put in a xbox360 disc to play so that is my excuse and if they figure out its a lie they will just send my console back right?

The problems are that this day and age everyone puts out problem child's. Apple,Microsoft,Nintendo,Sony and the list goes on. they are fast to get them out the door and their hands in are pockets that the testing they need to do to make sure the consumer gets a product that is what they say it is just does not happen now a days. I mean come on look at Toyoda and the problems with the breaks or gas pedal or whatever it was that killed drivers! Is this what it comes to now. We are the test dummies! The PS3 that i also have has been running with out security in place to protect me the consumer with my personnel information. This is all unacceptable! But we the consumer are the ones who always get stuck with the problems after the fact! Its all BS. Its not about one choosing to go online or not its about having things in place like they say they have so we are not put in a spot where someone can have a field day with my credit card! Just as my bank is held to the same standereds.

My console was affected with an E66 error and that error is supposed to be for a modified dvd and no way was the console opened to modified the dvd drive. He was ready to replace the console until i told him that it had been repaired by Gamestop about a year ago. Now as i explained on the phone to M$ that the console was opened and repaired by Gamestop for the RROD repair. And they said that was the problem i should have sent it to them to be repaired instead of Gamestop. Well for one reason the console was out of warranty and M$ wanted $120.00 to fix the console that i did not have. So Gamestop fixed it for $38 not a bad deal and never has it had any problems since until this update. What gets me is that the console was made with problems that should have been recalled across the board but unlike M$ to put the consumer first and make a product that is to the stander eds that they claim is unacceptable. So they he goes on to tell me the console is the property of M$. Ok so now i paid money for a product that i don't own. These people have bumbed there heads. It goes to show that all they are in for is the money no matter how they get it! And let me say i do understand the problem of piracy but come on the price they charge for things is just way to high.

They're replacing the affected system. Stop whining and tuck your skirts. At least your g-damn information didn't get stolen through ineptitude. It can have SERIOUS implication to people like college students if some hacker decides to wreck their credit history, because of the PSN debacle.

Oh my god, the RROD. Get a new argument. Sure MS jumped the gun by getting a system out before fully testing the hardware (but hey, they were a year in the market before Sony or Nintendo), which helped them get a foothold on the market. They spent billions extending warranties to cover the RROD. I had 2 RRODs (both replaced within a week's time). Haven't had an issue in years though. Didn't cost me anything to send it in, and got several months of Xbox live free (also got a free game on the second turn in). My argument isn't that one system is better than the other (I have both, and enjoy both). My argument is that if you say you'd rather be without online service rather than an update, then don't download the update.

Dear Everyone, especially COPMAN221. If you say you'd rather be without online service via PSN's issue as an argument to MS's issue with disc read error, then the solution is easy. Just don't download the update for MS. You won't have the update or be online (if that's your whole argument). Also, Day 6 of installing the update on my machine. I've gone through about 20 of my games since then and surprise no disc read errors. Sorry for the minority of those effected by this update. And sorry for ALL the PSN online users effected by the outage. Note: Some less than ALL

I agree, i don't play games online, and if that causes my system to fail. They can just remove online altogether! Whoever heard of such a thing!

COPMAN221 Posted May 22, 2011 11:39 pm GMT Personally I would rather be without online then to not be able to play my games at all.. Just my view on this ongoing system failure saga with Microsoft.. Haha I am so tired of Sony fanboys still trying to justify the fail of an online service.. Hey I would rather not be able to play a game than have some idiot running around with all my personal information.. Plus this problem is a very small percent of Xbox's..

@djforlife84 I don't think the word fail comes to mind when I read about a new system from Microsoft. They are doing great this gen and are succeeding in every aspect, so the word fail is far off. Now their first batch of hardware was faulty, but not enough of a reason for me to turn my back, and lose interest in the system, especially with the outstanding library of games for it.

@mrboone01 Maybe they look better but only a fool would say they play better as gameplay and game quality is entirely game dependant and each system has a good set of exclusives. Listen when I say I bought a PC for 1000 pound (british) and spend more time on league of legends than anything else. I bought Shogun total war 2, Star Craft 2, Heroes of Might and Magic (2 and 4), Crysis, Oblivion, Morrowind and many others but in the end graphics don't matter and gameplay does hence why I'm playing the addictive league of legends and all my friends are too! If your a real gamer get them out of there boxes, buy some games and get playing.

do I have the same case? my xbox in recent months freeze and get the disc unreadable error, but not all the time. and it even froze on a downloaded game but all this happen with xbox live session, never with other parts of the game. I hope they give me replacement,

Plugged in my 360 hoping the update would bork it just so i could get a new 360 from Microsoft. Unfortunately, the update worked perfectly. So I unplugged it, put it back in its box, set it on top of the equally useless PS3 I recently put back in its box after Sony's latest fiasco, and went back to my PC where the games look and play better than both consoles combined.

i have this problem occasionally with rented dvds. the only game i've had a problem with was nba 2006. i've been kinda lucky when it comes to malfunctions, i guess.

Sirbobislost

@frazzle00 Bah didn't read that right not all company's develop on the ps3 and port only some do but they still can't use all a blueray disc anyway the game still needs to fit on a DVD

Sirbobislost
Sirbobislost

@frazzle00 Because it's easier to got a DVD sized file on a blueray disc then the other way round :p but also its been said that the dev tools are easier for the 360 And ofc crytec complained look at what they ended up making because of console limitations After playing crysis1 crysis2 was a huge let down I was expecting a huge sprawling city environment what did we end up with? Walled of sections of street with the occasional option to use sewers to flank enemies.... Anyway if space wasnt an issue why have Microsoft freed up an extra gig of space on DVDs by removing the security layer? 1g doesn't sound like much but it's over a 10% increase in capacity

@frazzle00 See your bringing up the old multiplatform issue where most games are developed on the xbox and ported over none of these game take advantage of the PS3s extra storage space (although I need to check the ME2 thing only got it on my xbox and not my ps3 but I'm sure it's supposed to be better due to using the ME3 engine) black ops is a prime example that game looks terrible on the PS3 infact MW2 looks so much better it show how poor a job they did porting it and if you look at the PS3 exclusives they look amazing because they take advantage of the space and aren't ported Anyway getting side tracked blueray may not be THE media of the next gen but it's the current favourite unless something better comes along which is highly possible

Toysoldier34
Toysoldier34

@frazzle00 I don't know where you assume most homes have only a wired internet connection. Modems only have one output and a router is needed to connect multiple devices. Not very often do people pay for internet connection in their home just for their one gaming device. Most people have multiple devices or just a computer hooked up to the internet. No where did I say anything about the PSN not having the problems it just went through, but as a PC gamer I really wasn't effected much at all other than having to only use my 360 for netflix. Both Sony and Microsoft have had huge problems with their systems everyone knows that buy only fanboys like you make a huge deal to point a finger while your own red rings behind your back. You contribute absolutely nothing and only continue to embarrass yourself here as comment after comment of yours needs to be clicked to even view what it says. It really says something when I see that you mentioned me in some asinine comment only to see I need to reveal it to see how ignorant it is this time.

@johnvc2 Nope never said the whole fiasco was a good thing. I just said my experience was worth 4 free games. And as for the possibility of stolen money? Well there is fraud protection built into all credit card programs. And, like I said, it only took me about 45 minutes to cover all my bases and completely protect myself :) Happy Friday!!

@frazzle00 The PC does fine with DVDs but the difference is a PC doesn't need the disc at all after it's installed so the data can be far more compressed then on a console which needs to read directly from the disc and to much compression would make it impossible to read. The xbox could ofc begin adding highly compressed files that you install on the harddrive allowing it to read from the disc and harddrive at the same time this would extend the lifespan of DVDs quite a bit but it'll get to the pinnt where a new media form is needed but that won't be till the next xbox

@deathstream At least SONY from (PS ONE -PS2 - and PS3) didnt make make buy a console twice because of a design failure ,,,,,,,,while only within 3 years I had to purchase a new xbox360 3 f***ing times because of RROD and VIDEO FAILURE (there is no warranty in our place) because the device is too crappy to withstand a hot weather............Anyways I hope you have a good time time with your wii but for me this is the truth.......
