Microsoft's console makes it a full year on top of console hardware sales chart; Nintendo reveals 3DS sales of 262,000, Wii sales of 228,000.
The game industry as a whole has had a volatile year of ups and downs, but one of the few constants has been the Xbox 360's presence at the top of the console hardware charts.
Following yesterday's release of The NPD Group's monthly US retail sales data, Microsoft revealed that it sold 426,000 Xbox 360s in February. That makes 14 straight months in the number-one console sales position for the system.
Nintendo chimed in with its own numbers, noting that the Wii managed to move 228,000 systems, while the 3DS added another 262,000 to its US installed base. The Mario maker also saw some new milestones reached, with Super Mario Galaxy hitting the 5-million-sold mark, and Pokemon Black and White combining for lifetime sales of 4 million.
Sony released its own statement after the NPD release, but did not disclose any of its US sales figures for the month. In lieu of numbers, Sony said that the PlayStation Vita "saw overwhelming enthusiasm amongst gamers, resulting in exceptional hardware, software, and peripheral sales."
@Reuwsaat You're right. I guess I got a little irritated and reacted wrongly. I think the world is a better place due to the US, and this country has helped contribute a lot of great things to the world. Yeah, it isn't perfect, but I do think it offers great, diverse cultures, and lots of opportunities for all. But yeah, I overreacted, and for that I apologize.
@godzillavskong Just like George Carlin said: I love this country. I love the freedoms we used to have.
Oh Gamespot, you and your wierd grammar... "426,000 Xbox 360 units were sold in Febuary" - please remember that until next time
I'm not for console wars but I do have one slight question to put forward. All you fanboys below give me a list of the exclusives coming out this year for your console. That'll settle the scores :P These sales mean diddly squat, it's the gaming itself that matters.
@y3ivan Well the 360 certainly isn't dead. Best selling console for months, more than 40% of the total console market, the largest game library in the console market, the best online service, most innovative accessories not copies of the wii-mote and such. Therefore it's pretty safe to say that the Xbox 360 most definately isn't dead. "xbox 360 is the BEST console EVER made." --John Carmack
@Oldboy08 if you hate the US so much than why do you use a US based website. i also wonder on what grounds do you hate us so much (maybe the fact that we are the most prosperous nation in the world). while i dont know were your from im going to take a guess that your from France or some other European country and if it was not for America coming in to save you on two separate occasions you would be speaking german
@Diangre the excuse that xbox only sales well because it always breaks is so overused and does not even make any sense. if xbox's repeatedly broke than why would people constantly buy one every few months they would just switch to ps3 or PC. not to mention i have had my xbox for 4 years and not a single problem. i bet you have never used a xbox and are just ps3 fanboy get over yourself im so tired of seeing fanboy commits like yours and others all over this website.
I just don't get all the fanboy comments PS3 fanboys are all "most of those numbers are ppl buying a new box cause the old one broken down" and Xbox 360 fanboys are all "Hows 3rd place PS losers" honestly it looks so kiddish I mean there just sales no. I don't think it's that big of a deal.
i just wanted to add....how many of those xboxs were bought bc the first one burnt out....that will distort numbers...good for the company bad for the gamer...
ps3 fanboys jealous again? Surprise. How's 3rd place treating you sore losers? Maybe you guys should focus on getting an iconic exclusive title, you knwo, something that'll sell units and the brand name, i.e HALO or MARIO. Multiplat fantasy and multiplat gear solid sure are fun games, i play them on my xbox 360. B) but they aint selling PS3's anymore.
How did this news post get about talking about countries? It's a fact that everyone in their own country will view their home as the best in the world. There is no best country, it's all just what's in your heart and mind. I'm from Canada and I easily hold my home as the best in the world. Though I don't imagine everyone does and I wouldn't expect that. Geez..game websites go left and right all the time.
Oldboy08 i dont know were your from but id guess france?? as there the only ppl i run into who hate the usa but that aside this is not the place to talk about your hate for the usa or any other country if you dont like something keep it to your self but seeing that your so into psn why are you here??? and Oldboy08 why do you use Eng when talking to everyone??? you hate the us so bad now id say UK if so i got meny buddys from there who love the usa so i guess your by your self
@Oldboy08 So now you're the representative for almost everyone outside of the US, therefore you know that they feel the opposite?Just because you and some few choice friends don't like the US doesn't mean everyone does. Could you imagine if the US didn't exist? You would probably still be in a primitive state. I'm not gonna keep replying back and debate politics, but like DaSlyOne said, this is a US game review site, so if you don't care for the US why don't you go to a different site, run by a far superior country of your preference, but don't come up here spitting nonsense about how the US stinks, and not expect to get backlash.
@Oldboy08 Go figure Troll. This is a US game review site and the article is about results from a US market research company reporting on US retail sales data. No one here cares about your infinite wisdom and insight into the feelings of "almost everyone" outside the US...I'm sure you've personally talked to them all to come to that conclusion.
@godzillavskong "the best country in the world" in YOUR opinion. almost everyone outside of the US feels the opposite of that opinion.
@Oldboy08 Well it's a shame to hate the best country in the world. I'm sure you have your reasons, as I have mine for loving the US. I live here and while I may not support everything that our country does, I do enjoy what we stand for, and our ideals.
Games sell consoles and the 360 has a very good game library. The price, Xbox Live, and quality games have made Microsoft's console a very popular system. We have 3 in our home and all of them are still working. one Slim(250gb),one 08 HDMI equipped model, and one 09 model. I hope these sales translate into continued support down the road, even if they enter the next gen with a new system.
jediapprentice that to me dont sound like hacking just dumb ppl prob giveing out info to a buddy or something but ill side with the fact i hate calling xboxlive for help the fact is thay dont help at all a week a year ago i tryed zune music on xbl 14 day free trial and 2weeks ago thay send me an email telling me i owe them 10$ for zune music or my acc will get shut off. i call them to see whats up as i did not start an acc with zune music and did not add my card. and on my end the card was set to no renew. so i ask Microsoft why im being Charge 10$ and thay tell me its for my zune music i tell them i did not have an acc it was a free trial and at the end of the day long story short i had to pay 10$ just for them to fix the prob so yes thay sux and do not help
US only numbers. What about the other 190+ counties in the world? The US sure loves itself don't it...
@BillyColeman Yes I did see what the other guy said and I agree with you, I'm sick of all fanboys and their crap. It was reported that people did lose their cards. http://www.gamespot.com/features/microsoft-fix-your-security-problems-6348434/?tag=updates%3Beditor%3Ball%3Btitle%3B10 http://www.gamespot.com/news/microsoft-addresses-xbl-account-thefts-6349925
@mrsniper83 yup, I loved my 360... most of my friends with consoles had an xbox and Halo is amazing online! But I just felt that after having one console for so long it was time for a change, also loads of my friends were getting the PS3 ... I do miss the online, although not free, the service is a lot better where things such as private chat
I joined eventually, for Kinect more than anything. But ME1&2 helped out a bit. The slim line unit looks big next to my Slim PS3 mind.
Its quite clear that trolling happens when these stats come out...either you like xbox or you dont...move on
I have owned 4 360's. The standard 20GB premium model which Red Ringed, then the Arcade Core console which Red Ringed, then the 120GB Elite which Red Ringed and then bought the 250GB Slim which I sold last year for a PS3. That is right in 3 years I bought 4 Xbox's because 3 of them broke!
I never quite understood why people are into sales. I mean isn't that for the companies to worry about, it's them that are getting paid, not us. We should be worrying about whey they deliver. Sales do NOT determine which console is better. You have to be quite uneducated if you do.
I guess turds in a box are a hot commodity. Excuse me while I scoop the gold out of my cat's litter box. :P
"The game industry as a whole has had a volatile year of ups and downs, but one of the few constants has been the Xbox 360's presence at the top of the console hardware charts."....in AMERICA. Everywhere else in the world, PS3 outsells 360. Stupid american children.
Despite a lack of quality exclusives and an upgradation of one's XBL subscription from Normal to Gold in order to play Multiplayer , the 360 still seems to be doing very well . It just makes you wonder how well the 360 could really perform if Microsoft are able to land a few quality exclusives and eliminate the need for a Gold subscription in order to play Multiplayer .
The RRoD is driving these sales? The RRoD stopped being an issue years ago. Were these same people attributing 2005 PS2 sales to the system's widespread DRE problems? For some reason, I don't think so.
This is good news to hear and for some of you wondering why the Wii is still selling it's because a lot of places here in Toronto, Canada seem to selling the console with a sale and that includes the last price drop for it here and the same is said for the 360 as well with a price drop also comes with a sale on the system as well. So regardless this is good news for Microsoft and Nintendo and for Sony if your PS Vita did not sell well in Japan it is obviously not doing well either and personally I think the turn off is on the device needing a limited data plan from wireless service providers which is where the ball was dropped on this device.
@JJames3dCG The 360 sold the most as a console for 14 months straight and yet the ps3 outsold it in 2011?
Anyone still bringing up the rrod issue, I would like to point out that Microsoft replaces those consoles for free as part of their upgraded warranty. I had both my old og white original and black elite systems replaced for nothing. So anyone that pays for a new one is either misinformed or broke it themselves.
jediapprentice did ppl lose there cards??? was it a big deal nooo Everyone's has screwed up yes no kiding did u see what mahk88596546216 was saying?? if not go look and u will see why i was saying what i was saying im not on a side i just cant stand sony fanboys saying the same thing over and over rrod rrod
