Iconic game designer tells BBC Radio that the oft-delayed game still requires months of tweaking before its release in Q2 2008.
At the Leipzig Games Convention in August, the public got its hands on a playable version of Spore, the species-evolving/civilization-growing/space-faring game from game designer Will Wright. The appearance of the game came two and a half years after the game was first unveiled, and two and a half months after it was delayed yet again.
Spore's postponement marked the second time the game, originally due out in 2006, had been pushed back. According to Wright, though, the PC edition will still land in the rough Q2 2008 target window set by Electronic Arts executives during a post-earning-report conference call. (A scaled-down edition for the Nintendo DS has also been announced, though it currently does not have a release date.)
Saying Spore will be "roughly available in six months' time" on BBC Radio Five Live yesterday, Wright went on to explain the reasons behind the holdup. He said the game was undergoing "extensive testing" to ensure that it had the same broad appeal as one of his previous creations. "I'd like the people who played The Sims to be able to play Spore," he said. "I don't want it to be just [for] hardcore gamers."
Ah dang the last thing Will Wright said is freaking me out. I hope he dosen't make a huge mistake. I also wouldn't be surprised if the game got delayed again.
wow there will be a ds one thats cool, i just hope it will be a good game, for a while i didn't think this game would be coming out.
There actually is combat and strategy in the game. Do you homework before making blanket statements dude. tomjacobs wrote: there's no combat or strategy in the game, you get to customize little people's looks, decorate their houses and basically meddle with their lives.
[quote="tomjacobs"]there's no combat or strategy in the game, you get to customize little people's looks, decorate their houses and basically meddle with their lives.[/quote] My god, stereotype much? I don't mind The Sims but I enjoy a full shooter like Gears of War just as much. Incorrect lines like that are what give male gamers a bad name.
Bloody hell, I can only keep so many planaria around!! And they don't evolve into nothing!! This is my only hope to be done with the little ...
Don't make it likeable to the sims audience, start a new sort of game type and not the Sims please WW. Do not let this game crash because of them. I was liking what I see, now its just trying to attract a bigger female audience. Why did WW have a daughter...
"I don't want it to be just [for] hardcore gamers." yep, they are going to make it to cater for many peoples intrests, even if they dont have a 8800 setup and are about to upgrade yet again just to play crysis. its a wonder why they didnt intend for people who play sims to like spore in the first place .[/sarcasm]
The last phrase worries me a bit: Will Wright wants Spore to appeal to Sims players. Now let's think that through. Sims was hugely popular with the female audience, for a couple of reasons: there's no combat or strategy in the game, you get to customize little people's looks, decorate their houses and basically meddle with their lives. The only thing Spore has in common with these concepts ( as far as I know), is the customizable creature creation process. Later on, it becomes a game of developing, exploring, building, conquering, destroying. Good luck warming the Sims audience to that sort of gameplay. I just hope Will knows what he's doing, and the Spore gameplay won't end up falling between two chairs (if that's even an expression in English).
I hope it doesn't get pushed back again. I really want this game! Glad to hear that it should be top notch when it finally comes out though.
Devvy01, that's blasphemy, don't let EA or Microsoft here you. They think that's all we want to play.
I can only help it stays this way and does not get delayed again. It will suck if it does get delayed again. Soo... STAY ! lol
Seriously, this games seems, as of this generation, one of the most creative, and massively innovative games ever created. I think it'll be a huge success, if peoples computer can handle it that is!
I hope this game will be worth the wait... it might just be one of the best creation games out there if they do it right.
Good point FlaminDeath! It's better to have it work, not crash, and be fun, than to ship it as trash and hope to patch it later. I just hope it doesn't turn into a Duke Nukem Forever. I doubt that will happen, we've seen too much of Spore, and I have faith in Will.
I have complete trust in Will Wright. Unlike Peter Molyneux(sp?) I trust that he'll come through on his promises. DAMN YOU MOLYNEUX!!!
I don't mind waiting, as long as it turns out as good as it seems it will be. I've still got my money set aside for this baby.
I'm becoming increasingly skeptical of Spore. I want the game to succeed just as much as the next guy, but it seems to be a little too ambitious for its own good. The fact that EA is managing the whole project also isn't too encouraging. Hopefully, Spore will manage to live up to the hype.
I say, take the time and make the game worth playing. I don't want 2/3rds of a game... I have patience.
This game is going to be so amazing. My girlfriend is going to lose herself in it ... just like she has the Sims2 .... she doesnt even play the life part she just designs uber cool houses with the 4 trillion mods she got .... oh well ill say gbai to her again ... my bed shall be cold.
Q2 is April through June so anywhere between there. That's not TOO long of a wait. Should be worth it.
can't wait i just hope there are no more delays, but I want it to get done right too so if it takes more time thats fine.
It sounds like the game is practically done, and they are just making sure they have a complete game, something other development companies have not done with their games(*cough* X3 I'm looking at you). I doubt it will be delayed again unless there is a major problem found. So Q2 of 08? thats what March? April?
I have $50 dollars in my hand right now that says this game won't come out before September '08. Any takers?
Is this coming for 360? Because I can't keep up with PC upgrades each year. I hope it is. But then this is EA so there is a large chance of seeing it on every platform possible.
Please, PLEASE don't do this to us. If any gamer knows Spore, they know that they are going to promise an early date for release, then delay for a long time. I know they're going to delay this, so please, why tease us?
Looking forward to this game big time. @membernametaken: It's only officially announced for the PC, DS, and mobile phones, but the PC version is going own.
It feels like I have a spore of anticipation growing in my head! This game is going to have so much replay value and fun online I daydream about it at work!
This is one of my most anticipated games. I think it will be great even if it only offers half of the gameplay features Will Wright claims it will have. The delays are fine with me; I am willing to wait longer for a more polished product. Will Wright is a god among game developers.
