I don't have anything against WoW at all.....This just doesn't seem like a good idea. Eh, maybe I'll be surprised.
Duncan Jones set to direct live-action blockbuster based on Blizzard's fantasy world.
Moon and Source Code director Duncan Jones has confirmed he will direct the upcoming movie for Blizzard's Warcraft franchise.
Legendary Pictures' adaptation of Blizzard's world-conquering RTS and MMO series will be a live-action movie with a budget "north of $100 million" , according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Shooting for Warcraft is expected to start later this year for an intended 2015 release. The eight-year-old MMO World of Warcraft, which still boasts 9.1 million monthly subscribers, saw its fourth expansion, Mists of Pandaria, released last year.
"So the gauntlet was thrown down ages ago: Can you make a proper MOVIE of a video game. Ive always said its possible. Got to DO it now! ;)" wrote Jones on Twitter last night.
Spider-Man director Sam Raimi had originally been down to direct the film, but had to leave the project in favour of the upcoming Oz the Great and Powerful.

IS it possible to make a great movie from Warcraft universe, yes....but its got to stay dark IMO. The origional Story of Arthas was good enough to be a movie. No, im not saying it should be THIS movie, just the story in WC3 RC and FT was fantastic. Keep to this kind of storyline and itll be a hit, Stick to the WoW universe, and it will be a bust. JMHO
@Dark_Matter1337 that's actually what I've been saying. Don't do the movie on World of Warcraft... almost none of that story would work well with a live action movie, almost none of it, getting worse the more accurately you stick to things.
They really should just make the movie about War Craft 3, it's one of the fan favorites as far as story is concerned, and would probably be the easiest one to adapt into a screen-play. I mean you've already got the main protagonist (Arthas), and the whole jaina thing would be brilliant for a movie. Good guy turned bad is an excellent premise for a fantasy story. It's just the best option in my opinion.
I never thought I'd say this, but I might actually see this movie now. Duncan Jones is rather new but I have full confidence in him after watching Moon and Source Code, and that coming from someone who can't stand Jake Gyllenhaal
I liked Moon. Looking forward to it. Hopefully Legendary will announce some Mass Effect movie updates soon.
Moon was a good movie. I believe it starred Sam Rockwell who I don't see in nearly enough movies, then again I don't watch all that many.
Now it's live action again? I thought it was going to be animated?! Anyway I'm really iffy about this. I'd like to see it but I don't have high hopes. We'll see I suppose.
@HitmanDante David Bowie's the man. Even if he did fuck Mick Jagger. Wait, maybe that makes him the man even more.
Maybe if it was cartoony and all sweet and innocent, but there's no way a gritty live action movie would work for this, with all the night elves and orcs, there's no way i could take that seriously.
Sorry, but this should be Zack Snyder's baby. Look what he did with Dawn of the Dead, 300, and Watchmen beautifully. He's a great Director when it comes to an existing license. Just my opinion.
I'm glad to hear they are finally wanting to do a movie. I just hope it is all cgi. Then if it succeeds.... Starcraft!
@Deadpool-n "Legendary Pictures' adaptation of Blizzard's world-conquering RTS and MMO series will be a live-action movie"
So, no. Blizzard did not listen to years of fan requests.
While I'm still sad that Sam Rami isn't directing it this guy has done more than enough to prove his worth. The good director checkbox is down, but I'm still skeptical on the writers capabilities. He's never done anything to make me automatically get angry for casting him, but he's also done nothing to prove he is up to the monumental task at hand. I hope he's going to do a good job, I'm just a little skeptical.
NOOOOO!!!! Little Bowie!! I wanted him to do another awesome sci-fi movie!!! AHHHG Well at least this has the potential to make a ton of money. Then he can make whatever awesome movie he wants.
Movie based on Warcraft 3 and The Frozen Throne with great writing it can be a fantastic set of movies.
When I heard about this movie about 5 years ago, I did care. The game was good back then. I don't care anymore for obvious reasons for those who got enough cells to do the maths. I think I'll go take a bath now, thank you.
Duncan Jones is a fantastic Director, dare we say it could we now have a decent film based on a video game... pretty please?
@Xanitra I'd rather hear non stop bitching and fanboy rage than about how much you don't care. Nobody wants to hear you talk about not caring and you are not adding anything to the conversation so why join unless your so desperate for attention that you have to post on an internet forum just to get it?
@Xanitra Well thats a dumb question. But here it goes:
WoW fans, Movie fans, People who like Medieval settings, fans of that director, Old people, young people, and with 9.1 million subscribers still after 8 years, I say there are quite a handful of people that care. That was a stupid question dude, go away now.
@Xanitra Why'd you click the link to this article if you dont care?
@Xanitra If you don't care, why even comment? That's like getting into a tub, but don't care to take a bath.
Duncan Jones, nice! they're actually serious about this project i'm so glad, he's a great choice and source code was an awesome movie.
I do believe just "Warcraft" as a title would sound cooler, has a dark tone to it and would look more appealing to the non gaming crowd.
the should not even bother with a live action movie. the cinematic in the game are awesome so just make it a short film or direct to dvd because its gonna fail at the box office. its WORLD OF WARCRAFT. i hear that and i dont even care to want to watch it.
@MoK86 You think that JUST cinematics can tell a story? No offense man but that is really really really really really really REALLY dumb.
Moon was a stellar (no pun intended) film. However, it had the unfair advantage of a Clint Mansell soundtrack -- everything he touches becomes GOLD.
I didn't see Source Code, since it just seemed too cheesy, but I have to admit I'm curious what Duncan Jones can do WITHOUT Clint Mansell setting the mood. Let's just hope he leaves the idiotic Kung Fu Pandas out of it.
@Pyrosa Source Code is a really great movie. I would say it's just as good as Moon.
WoW is definitely hard to turn into a movie, you'd pretty much need something on a scale close to LotR for it make not looks cheap. And Moon was so intimate. But it was awesome so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Why can't it just be a "Warcraft" movie? I say to hell with all the WoW fans and start the script with the Warcraft I: Orcs and Humans story line :D Moon was kinda interesting, but Source Code straight sucked balls. Although Shia LaBeouf would make a good Pandarian...
@monstachruck What was so bad about Source Code? The movie seemed pretty good to me.
@monstachruck Source Code starred Jake Gyllenhaal. Not that it made the movie better.
Its called the WoW movie but I bet its actually the Warcraft3 story that's used since it could easily be spread across 3 films
I just can't picture WoW lore and characters in a live action movie. GL, Moon was awesome, but I have this sneaking suspicion Duncan Jones will drop the project just like all the directors that came before him.
WoW movie that sound buzzing since 2007 but havent seen any production yet. I think within a year we willbe heard that the director Duncan Jones has abandoned the film tobe developed just like Sam Raimi did
I think this movie is 5 years late. At the moment, all the hype is lost, and probably when the movie will be ready, people will play "Titan"...
@Coseniath Yea, As a kid i was INCREDIBLY hyped for WoW and the idea of a movie. I'll still watch it when/if it comes out though - i owe my past inner fanboy that.
ahh .. The happy days when i was barely a teen and would play 7-10 hours a day. My popularity plummeted exponentially in that period. It was glorious!
