Wolfenstein: The New Order revealed

New game from Bethesda and MachineGames coming to current- and next-gen consoles in Q4 2013.

The rumors were right. Bethesda today announced Wolfenstein: The New Order, a new entry in the seminal first-person shooter series heading to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next-generation consoles during Q4 2013.

The New Order is set in 1960 after the Nazis won World War II. Gamers play as the familiar American war hero B.J. Blazkowicz and are tasked with launching an "impossible counter-offensive" against the Nazi powers that have taken over the world.

Set in Europe, The New Order will have players infiltrating Nazi strongholds and battling legions of enemies, while taking control of "super weapons" that the Nazis have used to dominate earth--"and beyond," Bethesda teased.

The New Order is in development at MachineGames, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bethesda parent company Zenimax. The studio was established in 2009 by the founders of Starbreeze Studios (Chronicles of Riddick) before being acquired by Zenimax in 2010.

The game's debut trailer is available above. Check back every day this week for more coverage from GameSpot on Wolfenstein: The New Order.

The most recent entry in the series was 2009's Wolfenstein, which was developed by Raven Software and published by Activision.

It's a shame iD aren't doing it now, a tad disaapointed

@Bl00dKrush3r I'm actually kinda glad. id have gone downhill for a while and well, Rage was okay but not great.

This game already looks like it will be much better than something id would make, at least at the moment :T

@Bl00dKrush3r I am actually excited to see someone else doing it. I always thought it would interesting to see what other studios could do with these legendary franchises.

Good to see Bethesda on board, you know it will be a good game.

@depman1972 Bethesda on it doesn't mean squat. They're not making it, just selling it.

Hope they handle the alternate timeline, Nazis winning WWII better than Turning Point did,  I'm not taking down another Zeppelin with just a wrench again.

Kinda sceptical, after seeing the release trailer. I enjoyed the original and the reboot and this attempt at revamping the series doesnt appeal the way i thought it would. Maybe im wrong and the game will prove me wrong in the end.

Nothing beats the original Wolfenstien. End.

Trailer looks great! Still a bit skeptic about developers continuing on the true classics of gaming, because if they fall short of the hype, the whole franchise tends to take a hit.

Why not just let the greats of gaming be the greats? without risking their nostalgic presence in history... We don't see Dirty Harry 2013 because it would have a lot to live up to - lets hope they can keep the ball rolling then with the next Wolf and not send it to the bottom of the scrapheap.

I was sold when I heard Hendrix playing. Bethesda is the very best at what they do!! Rock on!

Although this game is set in 1960 and the Hedrix song came out in 1967. Does it matter? No.

Trailer doesnt look that bad, got that whole watchmen and rosharch voiceover ripoff lol.

Definitely an intriguing premise for the series. While I personally was ok with the Ravensoft reboot, I'm hoping the devs take some inspiration from Return to Castle Wolfenstein  with this one. On my radar for sure.

Since Dishonored proved that Betheda can PUBLISH good game, this game got my attention.

@X-Robert Arcane and Bethesda has the same owner, ZeniMax, which was created by people from Bethesda to cover more ground than just videogames. Bethesda also means two different things - Bethesda Softworks (publisher) and Bethesda Game Studios (developer). But either way, Bethesda Softworks is only game publisher in the flock so it handles the publishing of all ZeniMax games and also of several external companies. But Dishonored is Bethesda game as well as Skyrim, Fallout 3, Evil Within (when it comes out), this Wolfenstein, Rage, and of course Elder Scrolls Online - all were (or are) developed internally, only in different studios. Brink is the game which was only published by Bethesda and developed by outside company, for example.

Loved Wolf on the old Xbox, not at all on the 360. I really hope this is good like it used to be.

Why reboot games that were popular when the current generation of gamers weren't even alive?  Also, where's Id?

quakke

@ehkzibiht

Because it's time for other gamers than "current" to get some games also.

@ehkzibiht Well, none of us could be around while Dickens was alive, but that does not stop us from reading Tale of Two Cities does it? Besides I was already born when Wolf 3D came out, at the age of 2 though.

 @X-Robert I was around to play wolfenstein and beyond castle wolfenstein, although i was only 6 when the original was released. I had a blast playing beyond on the C64, but never managed to reach the top floor. Theres a great idea for an easter egg, hide the oringinals in there somewhere ;)

Most gamers are actually old enough to have been around for the original release. So I'm not sure what you mean by current gen of gamers?

ehkzibiht
ehkzibiht

@-RPGamer- I actually just went ahead and looked it up.  The last Wolfenstein release I remember was Wolfenstein 3D.  That was 1992.  I did not realize they continued to create these games past that.  Disregard previous statement.

I didn't know they had ED 209's in the 60's? Still,  "If it can shoot you or be shot at you, destroy it". Lets hope Bethesda learns from Rage.

I'm a huge Wolfenstein fan that was disappointed with the last game. This trailer was awesome and I'm looking forward to seeing gameplay and watching this series potentially expand into something bigger.

@IndianaPwns39

could you explain more details why are you disappointed with the last game

quakke
quakke

@roman4545 @IndianaPwns39

I can.

09 Activision edition featured CoD style everything. Movement feel, ironsights, health regen, sprint, level design, no key hunt/puzzle's and overall no Wolfenstein feel to it at all.

Play Singularity and you can't even tell the difference between Wolf 09 and it, since both were developed by Raven Software and were CONTROLLED by Activion (CoD feeder).

Raven does develop quality, just go look original SOF's and Quake 4. Wolfenstein 2009 does not feel like old-school shooter at all, whereas SOF I/II and Quake 4 does.

Hey kiddo. Who the hell you telling me to stop gaming? Gaming isn't something that is for kids only, certainly not. Incase you did not know, Doom, Wolfenstein, DN3D, HL, CS and all were developed by grown men for grown men.
Maybe you did not also understand from the news that this new upcoming Wolfenstein wont feature full health regen nor anything else CoD related either. There is Far Cry 2 style partial segmented health regen which courages for item and area exlporation.

Now im grown out of my teens, in my early twenties, so i do know how games are supposed to be, since i've been gaming since NES days.

CoD is not some destination where all FPS needs to go in order to be good. CoD is only popular because CASUAL GAMERS put it on a fucking pedestal by being so fucking dumb enough to actually pay for recycled copy and paste shit.

Sinqularity ain't orignal at all. Three years before Singularity, came a game called Timeshift, which actually did the timetravel thing right and actually succeeded as a game. Whereas Singularity is Call of Duty with a different skin. Just another attempt for Activision to rip off something and grab some money.
Go read my Sinqularity review i wrote.

Btw. Why should all sequels be new casual gen CoD's, huh? CoD doesn't represent anything else but stagnation. It doesn't even have the balls to fucking take any changes because Activision would lose it's Madden shooter cashcow.

Im willing to let CoD live if it realizes it's not a fucking GOD of videogames. CoD needs to be like any other game there is, so there will be variety.

roman4545
roman4545

@quakke

ok perhaps maybe you should stay in old school shooter instead of playing current and next gen shooter since you cant accept that most shooter are changing and becoming into cod style which makes more accessible and attract younger audience or generations to experience the titles or story. You do know that most FPS are same like cod... halo, syndicate, killzone, homefront, bioshock, deus ex  etc...  and it plays very well.

i know several friends who never play Wolfenstein and once they played it, they are surprised how similar to cod it was and they enjoy every mins of it.. and so do I (cod or non-cod players.)

 If you saying Singularity also letting you down then really you should stop gaming now ! That game was awesome.. though it may borrow from other sources but the story, E99, guns etc.. is really that good.

btw why should all games sequel should be played like old school and not new school especially for the next gen ? where is the revolution in that ?

It's amazing how pretty images and the right music in a trailer for a game can make me forgive no actual gameplay footage...at least for now. Well played, Wolfenstien...well played, indeed.

Oh, and good move getting away from Activision...-=x

Hell yes!

Hate that outcome with Wolf 09 that was direct result of Activision with it's stupid CoD adaption.

They should just go ahead and release a downloadable Return to Castle Wolfenstein HD on XBLA and PSN alongside this game.

Do it.

I really enjoyed Chronicles of Riddick back in 05. I remember thinking "this has to be the end of the game" and it just kept going and going... while staying very enjoyable.  I'm really encouraged by the publisher, producer and the fact they had Jimi freaking Hendrix play in the trailer!  Bring it on guys, looking forward to it!
