Wolfenstein 3D hits XBLA, PSN, PC

Downloadable version of id Software's seminal first-person shooter now available for $5.

Bethesda announced today that a downloadable version of id Software's seminal first-person shooter Wolfenstein 3D is now available to download on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

The game is available on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and Steam for $5 in North America, with a PSN launch in Europe "coming soon."

The game originally came to XBLA and PSN through Activision in 2009, though the new rerelease is by way of Bethesda, which acquired id Software later that year.

Wolfenstein 3D puts players in the boots of B.J. Blazkowicz, a spy agent who must escape from Castle Wolfenstein by laying waste to hordes of Nazis, including Hans Grosse and Mecha-Hitler.

Bethesda and MachineGames are currently working on the all-new Wolfenstein: The New Order, which will launch later this year for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next-generation consoles.

I am all for bringing more of these kinds of games to Xbox Live and PSN but charging 5 bucks, you have to be f'ing kidding me. 1-2 bucks maybe, 5 not a chance. People who spend 5 bucks on this are crazy!

PC gamers could already download that for free on any abandonware site.

Wait, so Wolfenstein 3D wasn't available on the PC before? Really bad wording Gamespot...

Wait, 5$ for a game which has in any other platform lower than this price, which has no new features, and has also free broswer versions? I'm sorry, no deal.

I bought it years ago and played it through, don't remember it being pulled either?

There are so many classics I'd like to buy, but all the $5s and $10s cumulate into hundreds if not thousands of $$$

Hell you don't even need to buy the game it's free to play on browsers on Bethesda's website for Wolfenstein right here in celebration of it's 20 year anniversary.

Plus, how is this even news? Oh it changed from Activision to Bethesda. Hooray....I guess.

Wolf3D was available in the ID pack on Steam several years ago. I guess it was removed, now it is back.. weird.

This was on XBL Arcade several years ago, they pulled it probably because very few people downloaded it.

Even $5 is kind of overpriced tbh.  Should be made free and public domain, like GTA1, the first elder scrolls game, marathon, etc.

It WAS huge in terms of FPS history, however.  (obviously)

Cool for nostalgia but I just don't think it holds up anymore.... I just don't think I'd play it after the first couple of minutes.

Was the game pulled from stores while the license was changed? I bought this game on PSN many years ago and I don't feel this is huge news.

I already have this on the 360. What happened? They remove it when Id bought the Wolfenstein license?

At any rate, are there any improvements to this over the Activision re-release? I remember there being some issues with slowness in the Zombies later in the episodes.

wtf? I thought it was always playable on the PC??... I remember playing it for a bit not long ago.

So unless they've made some cool updates I don't see the point. OK, maybe it's still compatibility. And it would also be cool if it would get like "achievements" or something.

But then I'd say; Do a remake of the game that's exactly the same but then with new graphics. Or maybe not exactly the same and just some new stuff to. Or did they already do something like that?...

Anyway, this seems weird, at least for the PC, cause I don't rememer it ever being unavailable.

i love backwards compatibility, but i don't remember complaining about my nes cartdriges not being compatible with snes, and snes ones with n64, all this things started with psone games working on ps2

I was going to say, "I've had this on PS3 for over a year, how is this news?" Then they pointed out that Activision originally released it on PSN.

Of course, you won't be able to transfer it over to Xbox One. I guess X1 can't handle the software: )

I have to ask, why?

Is the 2009 port incomplete or inferior in some way? What's the difference between the two?

FAIL_TR0LL
FAIL_TR0LL

Oh, the 2009 one isn't even available for purchase anymore. Bethesda just wanted their slice of the pie.

@FAIL_TR0LL It's still available for purchase, just not on Steam anymore.

So are there any differences from the one we already own?

Why buy games that you won't be able to play in XONE? And most probably in PS4 neither.

Pukshd

@darkeyez81 So when the PS4 and Xbox One comes, you know they gonna release other consoles, you gonna wait and not buy any games?

darkeyez81
darkeyez81

@Pukshd @darkeyez81 If I ever buy a console it will be for exclusive games. For the time being, PC is my preferred choice.

So that you can play them now?

darkeyez81
darkeyez81

@FAIL_TR0LL @darkeyez81 Sure, you can play them now, but not when MS cuts the Xbox Live service for 360.

@darkeyez81 @FAIL_TR0LL because most range between only 8 and 15 dollars and you'll surely get your money's worth in the time you're going to play it. Your logic basically implies why did any one of us  ever buy video games in the past?

Just to think of all those "idiots" who bought Super Street Fighter for the SNES at 70 dollars knowing that they weren't going to be able to play it on the next Nintendo system (N64). Those imbeciles!

Why is this news?  I've had it for about 3 years downloaded from XBL.
