Wii U users accidentally access console's debug mode

NeoGAF posters claim to have stumbled across a debug menu on the newly released console.

Wii U users have reportedly stumbled across the console's debug menu just a day after the Wii U debuted in North America.

According to a NeoGAF post, user "Trike" was trying to set up his Miiverse friends list after purchasing a Wii U, and accidentally came across what appears to be the console's debug menu.

Screenshots posted by the user show how he was able to access a list of admins, with options to regenerate admin passwords and delete admin accounts. According to a follow-up post, he was also able to view messages from developers.

Another NeoGAF post by user "Tom_Cody" reported a similar problem. The user posted photos showing a test screen, which reportedly appeared when he tried to sync his Wii U GamePad with the system.

The Wii U launched in North America on November 18, beginning at $300 for an 8GB basic model and scaling to $350 for the 32GB deluxe version, which includes a copy of Nintendo Land.

The first high-definition system from Nintendo launched with dozens of titles, including Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Assassin's Creed III.

GameSpot has reached out to Nintendo for comment.

I was in the same situation that "Tom_Cody" was in regarding TEST MODE: LINE MODE in the gamepad.

Nintendo emailed a shipping label so I could send the gamepad back to them.

Instead, I fixed it :D

The game pad was left in factory mode. I don't recall which menu it was (I really wasn't expecting to fix it ... ), but under one of the menus (either Flash Menu, UIC Menu or Misc Menu) there are two sub menus. One for "Ship Mode off" and "Ship Mode On"

Select, using D-pad (not thumbstick) "Ship On" or whatever it says. It'll be obvious, then "A". Turn off the gamepad, then turn it back on.

My gamepad is now on, working as expected, and the console is now updating.

I was hoping Nintendo marketing would consider making the console OS completely open as a reaction to this...

LOL

Still no reason to get a WiiU until the games come pouring out.

Yes! I finally found a news article NOT made by Eddie Makuch. For a month I thought every writer at Gamespot quit except him.

The only problem I see is that the Wii U is selling the deluxe version for $50 bucks more then the simple model... wtf is this?!

Let's be fair, the PSP, PS3 and Vita had debug firmware information screens that they'd never disabled before release, the GB Advance can run any code you want on startup, and the Dreamcast could play pirated games unmodified due to unremoved debug code. While this is a blunder from Nintendo it's not the first time and certainly not the worst.

@pez2k_ doesn't that depend on what the hacker community does with it? If they can crack the WiiU within a few months of release, it will be a huge victory for the "homebrew" community. They might never hack the 3DS... so for Nintendo to have such a vulnerability in the WiiU, should it turn out that way, is a pretty epic screw up.

With all the hating on Nintendo, you all act as if other consoles have not had problems at first launch? Overheating? Not even just problems at launch but problems in general. Red ring of death? It happens.

@TairuSzoola Not to mention, I had standard Wii's that I got early in the gen that had problems like the lens ALREADY going out of whack.

@CHROMEFLAMIN RROD 50% fail rate... There has been nothing so far that makes it a disaster.

These are the kind of glitches I like maybe I should have bought this thing at a launch :/

SolanOcard

@ArabrockermanX  @CHROMEFLAMIN They will not modify any of the units that have already shipped. So if you buy one soon, and don't download any firmware updates, you'll probably be able to keep the potential exploitation.

While this in itself is neither bad nor good its more or less the fact of WHAT it could potentially allow people to do with it.

Its almost like they were saying "Look you can pirate it, but don't forget to buy the console and the original games".

Debugging menu could lead to uncertainty i think..

I think the developers' intentions was to let users access the menu for security reasons

is this something bad? i though being able to debug your console would be considered as  good :D

A bit of a blunder, really hope this doesn't start day one piracy. Not what Nintendo needs, on the other hand... they need to wake up and really get online right. Lucky that in Australia most of the blunders, apart from the 5 gig firmware update will be fixed.

Personally I think a debug menu for a console would be a good thing, giving users more control over how their system works if they so desire (like a PC). However am I right in assuming this is a bad thing because it can speed up the hacking process or cause troubles for inexperienced users?

@LoganDaDestroya People will begin to play with things they can't understand and eventually end up destroying their consoles beyond repair. I don't think debug tampering is covered under warranty.

@wexorian You dont need perfect grammer, but at least try to not sound like and LSD and Acid induced drug addict. What is your point? Its a story as old as time that things sell despite not being very good. The last twilight movie just made 141 in a weekend but no one is going to sit there and say its anything good. The fact is nintendo's fanbase sticks with it even despite the fact the last worthwhile console they made was the SNES.

@kiramasaki  @wexorian What @tom_cat_01  said. Also, LSD and "acid" (in the context you're using it in) are the same thing. But you are very right about Nintendo's fanbase, particularly in Japan. They will buy whatever Nintendo or Sony put out. I'm not saying that's a good or bad thing, that's just the way it is, it's what they've all grown up with, they're familiar with it.

@kiramasaki  @wexorian The N64? It wasn't the best system of its time, but it still had the best game lineup of any console to this day.

And while the Gamecube had its ups and downs you can't completely discredit it, it had some fantastic things to it as well.

@kiramasaki  @wexorian Disagree, I had N64 and it was great. I later had GC and it was great too. That's because it had fantastic games. And for me it is quality over quantity!

@DarthLod LOL, this guy is going to give himself an ulcer over a consumer product he doesn't have to buy. It is derangement usually reserved for politics. It would only be appropriate that he named his ulcer "Nintendo" and when it explodes, rename it "Wii-U"
