Wii U Basic stock being 'rebalanced,' not discontinued

Nintendo says customers looking for the Wii U Basic models "will continue to find them available."

Nintendo has called a previous report suggesting that US retailer GameStop is recalling the Wii U Basic, possibly to discontinue the model, a "misperception" of the situation.

"There is a current misperception about Wii U hardware," said Nintendo senior director of corporate communications Charlie Scibetta to GameSpot.

Nintendo did not deny that it has recalled some stock of its Wii U units across the major US retailer, but instead says its intentions are to "rebalance" the stock of its Wii U SKU's in the marketplace. "Nintendo is working with its retail partners to simply rebalance the stock of the White 8GB and the Black 32GB Wii U models in the market," explained Scibetta.

"Consumers looking for either model will continue to find them available," concluded Scibetta.

Yesterday's anonymous source said that, as of June 18, all GameStop stores will need to return any remaining stock of Wii U Basic consoles.

When Nintendo launched the Wii U in November 2012 it shipped two models, the 8GB Basic and the 32GB Premium.

Nintendo had sold 3.45 million Wii U units globally as of March 31, 2013, with fewer than 400,000 sold in the first three months of 2013.

I've made a resolution when I finally got Wi-Fi at home. Since I've decided to play old games in the Wii I have with component cable (and my TV is better than ever), why would I get a Wii U if it only comes with HD and the same old games? No thanks!

I wonder what will come after Wii U...

If it were 150 bucks, I'd take the jump.

Make it dirt cheap and I'd take one despite what colour or size they were. I doubt I'll buy one otherwise though.

Oh, how I hate this corporate speech.

Nintendo here are some suggestions:

- Price adjustment

- 32gb and 128gb versions

- More third party support

- Release new IPs or even continue some franchises

- More mature games

But there is one thing you should have done: the hardware should have been at least 70% of PS4/Xbox1 specs. Wii U will not keep up with the next gen in 2 years.

They should "rebalance" the price.

This should of been a update then.

I'll buy a Wii U once they make a Super Smash Bros U or Fire Emblem X SMT bundle for it.

Man, I still really want a Wii U, but damn, it needs more games. It's just sad to see Nintendo kind of failing right now, and there's not much I can do about it 'cause for right now, there's not much reason to buy a Wii U. Come on Nintendo, at E3 show us some intriguing games. Too bad about the whole third party thing though.

@NTM23 I feel sorry for you since you want to play a system with specs of a system which came out 7 years ago. I understand that gameplay is the most important, but if I had to play PS3 or X360 for another few years, then I would die. 5 years for a system is more than enough. How can you be excited for this piece of s**t just because you will get new Zelda, Mario and Smash Bros? This system same as with the old one is 1 generation behind!

NTM23

@Imatyta

Actually, I'm the same, I want new-gen visuals now. I'm not here saying this as a 'Nintendo fanboy'. I'm going to buy all the consoles, at least the new Sony console, and most likely the Xbox One. I always buy all consoles and also try to get PC stuff as well.

I'm not entirely excited about it, certainly not compared to the other two consoles, but I do want to see what a new 3D Zelda, Mario, or what have you looks like. I'm not really into Smash Bros, but it's alright.

It may not be enough to warrant a console, but the idea of a 3D 'next-gen' game from a beloved franchise is exciting to me. I don't see how it isn't, even if the visuals aren't next-gen visuals like PS4 and Xbox One.

Oh, and you can swear on this site, so you didn't have to sensor shit.

Don't worry about 3rd party support, it's there, it's just that those who aren't supporting it have been pretty loud about it. Nintendo said that they have a Nintendo Direct for 3rd party titles.

Wii U is garbage. It can barely run ports of this generations games, let alone be future proofed to continue when the real next gen systems arrive.

Nintendo's arrogance and control problems have botched the Wii U.

NTM23
NTM23

@suprsolider I really don't think it was the consoles fault that the ports didn't run as well, it was the developers that made their first attempt on a new hardware, and didn't do it entirely successful.

Taken from developer Shin'en:

"The Wii U GPU is several generations ahead of the current gen. It allows many things that were not possible on consoles before. If you develop for Wii U you have to take advantage of these possibilities, otherwise your performance is of course limited. Also your engine layout needs to be different. You need to take advantage of the large shared memory of the Wii U, the huge and very fast EDRAM section and the big CPU caches in the cores. Especially the workings of the CPU caches are very important to master. Otherwise you can lose a magnitude of power for cache relevant parts of your code. In the end the Wii U specs fit perfectly together and make a very efficient console when used right."

Now who should we listen to, ignorant gamers who know little to nothing about game development and hardware, or developers who've successfully created quality titles on a system?

NTM23
NTM23 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@abHS4L88

Yes, of course it's about the sales. When I said it wasn't as easy, I wasn't referring to their abilities to create something, only their will to figure it out compared to jumping over to the other two consoles, which is what I think most game developers will do.

I hope more game developers go to the Wii U, but I don't really care to see cross-console games on it, 'cause I'll just play those on either Xbox or PS4. What I want to see is original, creative titles that you can only get on the Wii U.

The Wii U's hardware has been stated several times to be more efficient and cheaper to developer for, even compared to the 360/PS3. Plus we've seen this happen before with the PS3, when Gabe Newell said that the hardware was junk, then when sales picked up, what do you know? Valve's making PS3 games. It's all about the sales and when the sales of the Wii U pick up, then we'll see less b*tching from developers.

NTM23
NTM23 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@abHS4L88 That's probably true, but I'm guessing it's not quite as easy to utilize all that compared to jumping to the other two next-gen consoles, and while it may have a leap over current-gen consoles, it's not as powerful as Sony or Microsoft's consoles. It doesn't necessarily have to, but I'm just saying.

the hard drive is small.  one of my few complaints with the system.  got the delux edition myself specifically because of the larger hard drive.  throw some storage space on that bad boy that can't be doubled by an SD card!

Wii U doesn't have a hard drive. It is flash memory. Big difference.

Nintendo is god damn stupid to include such little space.

I see a lot of people saying that a lot of wii users will but a wiiu, you people forget that almost everybody who bought a wii thinks that the wiiu is an unnecesary upgrade and others of course will migrate to the tablet/mobile gaming, as simple as that

Nintendo will stay delivering quality (or dumbed down)  first party titles for fans on the wiiu, unfortunately the state of the wiiu is being more clear in that aspect.

@COPMAN221ISBACK  Did Microsoft and Nintendo hurt you in some way in the past?  Is anyone making you buy their consoles?  Is there no other company that makes a console that you like?  Aren't you free to build a gaming PC?  Then why do you have to troll on what seems like every article?
