Wii U Basic being discontinued at GameStop - Report

Retail source says GameStop is gearing up to discontinue the 8GB Wii U on June 18.

Nintendo could be gearing up to discontinue its Wii U Basic SKU after E3 2013, a new report suggests.

Kotaku has posted a report from an anonymous retail source saying that, as of June 18, all GameStop stores will need to return any remaining stock of Wii U Basic consoles.

Nintendo originally launched the Wii U in November 2012 with two models, the 8GB Basic and 32GB Premium, with the latter being bundled with a copy of Nintendo Land.

The Wii U has suffered from slow sales in 2013, and multiple retailers around the world have reduced the price of the console in various sales.

The source says GameStop has contacted its stores with the following message: "Nintendo Wii U Basic Recall - Two Week Preparation On Tuesday, 6/18, all stories will need to return all new/unopened Wii U Basic (020359). ... Stores that have 10 or more in stock will receive shipping cartons from the [distribution center]. ... All other stores will need to save shipping cartons for this recall."

GameSpot has contacted GameStop for comment.

Nintendo will not be hosting its own press conference at E3 2013, but will instead hold its own Nintendo Direct event that will showcase, among other titles, the first look at the new 3D Mario game for the Wii U.

Wii U will win at the end of the generation like Wii did

Nintendo has fallen hard, they better get it together with E3 otherwise it's downward for them. GameStop is falling no matter what, digital is going to consume them hole.

Just can't stand it anymore. I don't even think Super Smash Bros 4 can save the Wii U now. All the supporters keep saying "Just wait for Zelda to come out!", "Just wait for Mario to come out!", or "Just wait for SSB4 to come out!", but look around! None of those games are anywhere in sight. Even Pikmin 3, touted as a launch title, is still months away. In fact, I almost forgot, but New Super Mario Brothers U was actually a launch window title, and still Wii U continues to fail. I wanted this console to succeed. A lot. But things just keep getting worse and worse. I have officially lost all hope for this console. Time to scrap it and do something new. Like a real console, with real power, a real feature-set, real services, real games that people really care about, and, God help me, a real freaking name!

@LanceCypher Wii U sales shows a huge improvement since the reveal of xbox one . http://mynintendonews.com/2013/05/24/wii-u-sales-rank-on-amazon-uk-jumps-875-percent-after-xbox-one-reveal/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

i'm not a fan of nintendo's console , and i don't think i'm gonna buy it in the near future . but i hope wii U can compete with the other consoles , wii U has a lot of potential , and suprisingly it's games centric . i hope a lot of games come out on wii U.

I afraid Nintendo Is going to Down! If they really don't come Up with something  serious...

just imagine the price tag on a Wii U after the next gen release

it would go back into 150$-100$ or less

It was kind of a useless bundle anyway, I mean you get so much for just $50 more...

@Rovelius i'd recommend the premium pack for everyone even those who prefer a basic console but people still bought the basic pack, i can't argue if they are happy with it. Nintendo still makes a loss on Wii U and i can't say that i should get anything for free from any company.

The truth is spreading like wild fire all over social media. This is why Nintendo still has a chance to redeem themselves. I can't understand how the blind dumb ass xbots defend Microscam with this shit. Parents should be outraged.. SMH

@COPMAN221ISBACK Hmm, so covering the camera wouldn't work no? Some people just love scaremongering.

SuperBigBoss100
SuperBigBoss100

@ScouseLemon @COPMAN221ISBACK Even that won't solve the issue. Within the hour, Bill Gates would come at your door with bodyguards and special task force asking why the owner covered the camera. Then, slap a heavy suit for tampering with the device. Next, the cam will listen in on the owner struggle over the case. It will then offer ads for lawyers (bad ones). Kinect will toy with the owner's family, tearing them apart, ending relationships, and destroying social life by advertising provocative messages and ads. After, when the time is right, the Kinect will sense the owner's lonely heartbeat, sensing depression, anxiety, and desperation. That is when its sadistic fun begins.

i bet nintendo is just going to take  the 8 gig systems slap in a 500 gig drive and try to  sell it for $400 nintendo is greedy

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@leechmilk5

Nice logic you got there, except if they were greedy, they would've done this right away. Also considering the price of proprietary memory, $400 for a 500GB Wii U is actually a really good deal, so yeah, you don't know what you're talking about.

@abHS4L88 @G1ingy

nah, it isn't. after the xone fiasco i really wanted it to be. but it is an outdated hardware, 1.2ghz tri-core ppc + 2gb of ram? its ridiculous when u compare the specs of xone and ps4. I get the whole "not focusing on graphics" thing, but wii u will probably miss a LOT of third-party games because of this, just like the wii did.

And I was so curious to see how he'd respond afterwards. I don't even know that much about tech, but I at least know enough to know that the Wii U is very much a next gen console in terms of tech.

abHS4L88

@leechmilk5

Hey guess what? The CPU on the PS4 and XBox One are also slower than the 360/PS3's CPU, know why? Because clock speeds aren't as significant as they used to be. So because a more insignificant part of the Wii U's CPU is worse than the 360/PS3's, it makes it overall worse? Never mind the fact that the Wii U's CPU is much more capable in pretty much every other way as well as having a GPU that's far superior and 2GB of DDR3RAM. While it's not a massive leap over the 360/PS3, it's easily much more powerful. Did I say the Wii U is worth $400? No, due to the lack of games, it's not really worth $350 right now, but when the library kicks up, then it'll be worth $350.

@abHS4L88 @leechmilk5 the wiiu cpu is slower then the 9 year old xbox 360 hardware thats not made up its a fact no way in hell is the wiiu worth $400

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@leechmilk5

Uh, the Wii U sports much more advanced hardware than the 360 so I don't know what you're talking about (nonsense again).

That's why Nintendo didn't put the Wii U at $400, but in order to ensure that it doesn't hit that, they couldn't jam a bunch of proprietary memory. Want an idea of how expensive proprietary memory is, look at the Vita's memory cards, or the fact that the 500GB PS3 costs almost as much as the Deluxe Wii U.

leechmilk5 like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@abHS4L88 @leechmilk5 the xbox 360 looks just as good as the wiiu   the xbox 360 is $200   so if the wiiu was to cost $400  that would be the  end of the wiiu

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@leechmilk5

If the 32GB model is $350, and most 500GB external hard drives cost around $60, then $400 for a 500GB Wii U with a game bundled is a really good deal. As it stands, the system just doesn't have a strong library, which is why it seems like a ripoff.

By modern standards, 32 GB should have been in the basic package and that still wouldn't be a lot.

@Bubble_Man Nintendo is always pushing the envelope on how outdated their technology can be when they release it.

I didn't like the idea that they were releasing multiple versions in the first place. I'll be pissed if they start making another version better than the deluxe.

Does a recall on all the basic models mean that they'll be collectible one day? If it does, I might pick one up cheap, to have and sell in the future.

Micropixel
Micropixel like.author.displayName 1 Like

This is a good call. I've said this before, the Basic Model is simply not the preferred choice between the two sets (unless you want a white colored console like I did).

I think the next step is to drop the price of the deluxe model to $299.

It looks like Sony will win by ...... default.

WiiU is too stupid a purchase and Xbox One is making all stupid moves.

WiiU is basically a Wii minus the hype that floated the Wii. An imprecise air mouse is nothing compared to Kinect or PS Move's features. Plus how many Zelda's and Mario's can one take? Not much innovation on Nintendo side coupled with kiddie games for 9 yr old girls means this is a system for casuals only. So the Wii people bought but didn't buy games for it. Collected dust. Now, these casuals have moved on to Phone gaming and won't look at WiiU which is why WiiU is flopping and struggling. There's no compelling games, features, hardware power or anything basically compared to Xbox One or PS4.

Speaking of which, Xbox One is making ridiculous announcements with blocking used games, always on Kinect, always online, ads with live, day-one exclusive 'DLC' for Call of Duty #46285 and more focus of TV means Xbox One isn't looking appealing at all. They've done a fine job shooting themselves in the foot. DealWithit.

This means, if you need proper console gaming, you have to buy the only viable console - the PS4. And if they follow Xbox One, that leaves you.... nothing on console side.

Which means PC gaming looks promising for next few years if they don't mess it up. It is starting though - D3 online-only, SimCity online-only, Steam DRM having no possibility of reselling games, always online Origin, quality of games lowered for PC to match console, console versions come first (Dark Souls, GTA) etc. And piracy and DRM for that. So the industry is killing PC gaming slowly.

All this means, I can go out and get fresh air .....

@fanirama when it comes to xbox one, E3 is either going to save it or destroy it. I'm really hoping that they announce some great new games such as halo 5, Mafia 3 and some new IPs. they should also resolve all of these rumors once and for all with stone hard information regarding exactly what the kinnect will do, what the used games system really is, and what will happen if you don't provide 24 hour internet connection. if they don't put a stop to the rumors then xbox one is, unfortunately, finished.

@leechmilk5 @fanirama

they already said they wouldn't, and would let this be a publisher decision (as it always was). At least first party games won't have DRM, and i doubt many publishers (apart from EA) will go down the DRM console route.
