Wii MotionPlus due June 8, Wii Sports Resort July 26

Precision-enhancing controller attachment gets launch date in North America; each plug-in to cost $20.

Nintendo's Balance Board accessory for the Wii has been tremendously successful, even though the company's software support for it has been mostly limited to the packed-in Wii Fit and a drum-training mode in Wii Music. Now the company is experimenting with even less support for its peripherals; it announced today that the Wii MotionPlus attachment would arrive on North American store shelves June 8--well in advance of the July 26 launch of the first Nintendo software to specifically support it, Wii Sports Resort.

Fortunately, gamers who pick up the $19.99 accessory will have a handful of third-party options that take advantage of the controller before then. Specifically, Electronic Arts' Wii versions of Grand Slam Tennis and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 are expected to arrive in stores on June 15 and 16, respectively, with the publisher heavily touting the games' Motion Plus features.

When Wii Sports Resort arrives in July, it will be bundled with one Motion Plus attachment for $49.99. The game's North American launch will be preceded by a June debut in Japan, where Nintendo has seen the Wii lose significant momentum as of late. Speaking to the press last week, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that the Wii business was "unhealthy" in Japan, and implied that the country's consumers may be getting tired of the motion-sensing technology.

[UPDATE]: Customers who purchase the Wii MotionPlus on release day will have one compatible game option with which to put the peripheral through its paces. A Nintendo representative told GameSpot that Sega's Virtua Tennis 2009 for the Wii will incorporate Wii MotionPlus features when it arrives on May 19.

gameking5000 Would you like to mention where you're from? We might not even be talking about the same currency. That being said, for the tech specs on the Wii, it clearly doesn't cost half as much to produce the system as it does to sell it. The MotionPlus is the modernization that it really needs to hold afloat for these next coming years. Jabagg I read that article and I dispute it's credentials. The Wii was making said profit when it first came out. Streamlining and their deals with AGI alone would make bulk purchases cheaper. The big N is the most profitable video game company in the world, pulling in over a million US dollars profit per employee per year. All of those factors combined suggest that the Wii is nearing a price cut, especially seeing as how much sales are slowing down in Japan. jpsaply Again, your facts seem a little wrong. PS3 is the most open out of the three consoles. You're allowed to install 3rd party hard drives, use third party storage easily, use 3rd party keyboards and mice, use third party headsets (bluetooth), install a third party operating system (Linux)... The list goes on and on... Overall, the PS3 ends up giving you the most bang for the buck seeing as how it's compatible with everything you have lying around anyways.

jpsaply 5 pts

Shani, lets not forget the PS3. accesories like the keypad

shani_boy101 18 pts

Theres no reason why they couldn't have implemented this into the original controller. This is what the Wii does: lure you in with a reasonable price, then pummel you with these overpriced accessories you need to buy. same with xbox.

@gameking5000: The Wii is cheap, but you get less. For some people that works out, but it isn't as though the Wii is a luxury sedan for the price of a Yugo... it's a family sedan and priced as such. Nintendo needs to stop leaning on the motion control gimmick, now that the endless shovelware has killed that fad, and focus on their core gameplay. Get back to 1st party exclusives, which is where Nintendo is strongest. Their current strategy is as much a problem as their weak hardware.

gameking5000 12 pts

@joelgargen + Caer_ Death + IMDLEGEND It only costs $400 where I live. Also I got my Wii as bundle with an extra game without much price change. The Wii is still cheap it always was cheap ever since it was released. The DSi and the Motion Plus BUNDLE are useful things to have, I call them "upgrades". They should help a lot playing future games. I'm especially excited using the Motion Plus to play Grand Slam.

Jabagg 5 pts

Now I know that sounds like a good idea, but an earlier article here on GameSpot said that Nintendo only makes about 6 dollars for each Wii sold. Lowering the price $50 would be bad business for Nintendo, considering most of their Wii profits come from the Wii console itself and not the games on it.

joelgargan 5 pts

@Caer_Death Thats a good idea. It would make the Wii sell even better, pushing its lead ahead.

Caer_Death 5 pts

Nintendo needs to drop the price of the system by $100, not just a mere $50. They can do it with no trouble now, just lost profits. In reality, we might see it drop down to $189.99 or so to be just below the arcade 360.

IMDLEGEND 5 pts

I think its time for a Wii price drop to $199. Its been on the market for almost 3 years without a price drop. That is unheard of. I know Nintendo is trying to maximize profits, but this is the right thing to do at the right time. In regards to the peripheral, I don't see the big deal. It isn't like Nintendo is forcing you to get it to continue to play (yet). It reminds me of the memory booster card for the N64, optional at first, and required later (ie perfect dark).

Great so my parents have to pay another 80£ for all 4 of there controllers? Glad to hear the Wii is losing momentum, i personally had a go on my friends one for Half an hour when they first came out, and i havent felt the need to play one since and thats almost over 2 years now.

@gameking5000 You know ther's a reason why the 360 cost more than Wii. I agree with wiiplay1. The Wii controls are waaay to expensive. It cost about $105 where I live. And it is no advanced thechnology in the controls at all. Ther really need to make a price drop. And Nintendo have to stop makeing new money makers like Wii Motion Plus! I can't buy all this stuff to my Wii! I need to spend money on other things too. Wii motion Plus is nearly as stupid as DSi. DS Lite is much better. *Sign* I hope I get Wii sports resort on my birthday so I don't have to lay down much money on that. But wiiplay1, there is more than 2 games that uses Wii balance board. I know some sports game, RRR TV Party, Shaun White Snowboarding Skate it and some more. But once again, Nintendo must give Wii Balance board a lower price.

g1rldraco7 15 pts

Well at least the game will be released soon. I can't wait and I have to buy another wii remote and nunchuck.

gameking5000 12 pts

@wii play1 No the Xbox is no bargain. A lot of the Wii games are multiplayer but not so many games on the Xbox are multiplayer. Then theres the Xbox CONSOLE which costs more than the Wii and also the Wii play bundle which makes a Wii remote cost very little.

wiiplay1 5 pts

And people whine about the Xbox 360 premium costs. 4 Wii Remotes with nunchucks, Wii MotionPlus', and maybe Wii Zappers costs well over $250. And that doesn't include the other peripherals. Don't be surprised if you end up spending $500 on the Wii and stuff for it. This makes the Xbox 360 and it's components look like a bargain almost! I mean, at least those controllers don't cost over $100 each with all nessesary accesorys!

wiiplay1 5 pts

Yeah Nintendo, just don't support the peripherals you roll out every so often. Exactly, Nintendo does not support the peripherals they roll out very much. The Wii Zapper only supports like, 5 games. The Wii Wheel is largley scarce in games (where's Burnout for the Wii?), and as said, Nintendo has only so far made 2 games supporting the Wii Balance Board. Suddenly, I'm not so sure about buying the Wii MotionPlus.

supastarz902 5 pts

Force Unleashed 2 + Motion Plus anyone?

Dark_Highlander 5 pts

How about making a controller that has a re-chargeable battery rather than this motion Plus?

chansaet 5 pts

$20 is to much. So Wiimote= $40, Nuncuck $20, motion plus $20. Thats $80 per controller. This doesn't even include the $10 wii wheels I bought for Mario Kart. And I have 4 controllers. So if I get 4 wii motion plus. thats $80 (motion plus) + $180 (3 extra wii motes with 3 extra nunchuck) + $30 (3 extra wii wheel (one came with Mario Kart wii so I'm not going to count that))= $290 just for controllers alone. Even if you take away the Wii Wheels thats still $260

GodsPoison 9 pts

Probably the only game i actually want to play on the Wii is Metroid Prime 3, i loved the first 2 on my gamecube but im only so-so about buying another console, and a casual game console at that.

werc96 5 pts

The wii is definetly one of the most dissapointing consoles ive owned. Its seriously been about 2 years the last time i looked forward to purchasing a wii game. Now there are finally at least 3 games im looking forward to playing: Madworld, The conduit And Punch Out! But another new peripheral for the control??? Meh....Instead of working 30% of the time we might hit a 50% now...No thanks.

JackHoleFace00 11 pts

@ people like tyzwain You're missing the point. It's not that the Motion+ is garbage. It's that just in order to play certain games as intended you have to buy all this stuff, and it was supposed to be like that in the first place! But now it'll cost $80 total for each controller (& tax, which is now 9.25% in LA, or, for example, $167.40 for just two extra controllers, not including the cost of batteries). It's a rip off. And for what games??-- Fair enough about hardcore vs. casual, but what about quality vs. garbage? Yeah Twilight Princess was good when it LAUNCHED with the Wii (and on the GameCube), and Mario Galaxy was great from 2 years ago. But MW was the only decent game to come out on the system in the past year, and even that game can be beaten in a matter of 5-6 hours. And aside from a couple promising looking games (Punch Out, Conduit), there's little else to look forward to. You CAN have quality and casual at the same time (LBP is a perfect example), but that's not happening on the Wii.

xgalacticax 9 pts

They aren't getting tired of the Motion sensing technology. The industry is full of untalented developers that dont know how to make something great with the technology.

thetravman 13 pts

There's a Red Steel 2? This perpheral will surely come in handy. And d3emondav3, weird enough that the games you mentioned are shooters. No Conduit for you?

@ xpopsx " think game spot had allready desided how they were gonna rate those games before they even got them" and that's why they gave wario ware smooth moves a 9.1 ans twilight pincess 8.8? i may not agree with their rating but no one would give wario ware a 9.1 on first look. get a clue. "just look how they are gloating about the wii sales being down in japan at the end of every article" that's called reporting. you have to show both sides of the situation in order to be accurate and not seem biased.

@demoman_chaos the on rail shooter genre doesnt mean cash in its a genre thats but crap outside of arcades and due too the wiis IR aiming its a genre that they are opening up again alot of people like on rail shooters and just like all games if done right they can be fun but just because you are not a fan of the genre doesnt make it unacceptable that would be like me saying having a third person shooter on the ps3 is not acceptable because im not a fan of the genre (i like third person shoots though) if your wondering how this is not a gimmick think about the fact red steel 2 and no more hereos 2 are both anoucned for this year and will use this for sword fighting grand slame tennis tiger woods 2010 vitru tennis will use it on release if winter ever finds a publisher this it confirmed too use it wii motion plus allready has 3rd party support that the ballance board and other accessories lacks.

d3emondav3 5 pts

I have not touched my Wii since Christmas. And I don't think I will be any time soon, as I just got Bioshock and Crysis for my PC and Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead for my Xbox. What does Wii have? Nothing worth playing at the moment.

Amir29 5 pts

Some of you have said you're not happy with Gamespot's take on the Wii. I don't always trust Gamespot's reviews on software as of late, but I have to say I agree here. The motion sensing concept is an EXCELLENT idea. It sold many consoles! But, it has also attracted mostly the casual gamers who play games inshort bursts and move on quickly. This hinders the sale of software. And once developers realize their Wii game sales are dwindling, they make the console less of a priority to develop for. The hardware is also not very advanced in comparison to it's competitors in the 360 and the PS3 making the hardcore gamer lose interest almost completely. Support for unique peripherals have always been lax. I mean, take a look, in all of the years of gaming, how many light gun games have we had thus far? Nintendo needs to go back to what they're good at. Innovation in their software, and cutting edge technology in their hardware. If they wish to do something different with their business model, I would suggest they stop caring about piracy issues and move to a stronger media format as well. Their concerns of pirated versions of their software has held them back since the SNES's move to N64.

atopp399 5 pts

I agree with Shtinky. $80 for a new controller is too much.

demoman_chaos 5 pts

I have a theory on why GameSpot doesn't like the Wii, they are sickedned by Nintendo's abandoment of their faithful and angered by Nintendo replacing them with old grandmas and young kids. Can't say I blame them, considering the GameCube had some great games. The last good game released for the Wii before Madworld was Brawl last year. Since then, nothing but minigame collections, rail shooters (House of the Dead was ok because that is what it had always been, but a Resident Evil and now a Dead Space one are not acceptible), and gimmicks like Wii Fit. I am glad I got my PS3 when I did.

xpopsx 5 pts

@Malco_Vincenzo i wouldnt trust game spot for wii reviews in a million years reasons madworld 7.5 twighlight princcess 8.8 Metroid Prime 3: Corruption 8.5 Tenchu: Shadow Assassins 5.5 i think game spot had allready desided how they were gonna rate those games before they even got them just look how they are gloating about the wii sales being down in japan at the end of every article

mmntw27 5 pts

@2w-sephiroth That sounds like a great idea! They DID do something kinda like that, even though it was with another developer, called Eternal Darkness, which the inevitable sequels to such a great game were never made because Silicon Knights and Nintendo are too afraid to make more money...

Flaon 5 pts

Nintendo will probli start putting one Wii Motion Plus in with the Wii and current owners m,ight be able to get a free one like the Wii Jacket, or they couldve just released an all new controller with it built in so the cases still fit, it's starting to look like a Sega Genesis liek problem (32x and the 64 bit attachments), the wiimote will look like a meter long sword if they keep it up and then we will need a 1 meter looking condom to keep it protected lol.

clue942 5 pts

Agreed with 2w-sephiroth, as stated in the article they think "people are getting tired the motion-sensing technology" but thats not true, hardcore gamers aren't liking the fact that everytime we go into gamestop all we see are barbie, cartoon movie games like cars and bee movie, and games that obviously aren't for hardcore gamers...look at MadWorld, Call Of Duty 5 (with online multi), No more Heroes, all news games towards the Wii with good sales because its games everybody wants to play. They can do it without Mario and Zelda, its just we need it from them to give it to us. Sell it and we will buy...

2w-sephiroth 5 pts

Wii needs hardcore games nintendo. Thanks for Smash brothers, metroid, zelda, mario and such... but can you make a new franchise that will awaken the hardcore users that suported you this last twenty or more years? And make something with the production value of Zelda or Mario, but without being afraid of wearing the M for Matured tag... Id love a third developer do something crazy with the wii. Or an enchanted version of FFXII for Wii.... Hmmm. Man nintendo create something new without Mario or Zelda in it and non kiddy. Kids and parents wont know what to buy. We will.

Shtinky 21 pts

So basically each time one needs to add a new Wii controller to play multi player games, they have to buy... 1x Wii Remote ($40) + 1x Nunchuck ($20) + 1x Wii Motion Plus ($20) Total = ~$80 for a new controller.

Malco_Vincenzo 5 pts

@ meedak i've already looked man. Gamespot gave Warioware smooth moves 9.1? if that's gonna be on you top ten list than okay man. also mose of the wii games that got over 8.0 on this site weren't wii exclusives dude. sad thing is a could only find 9 games that were decent not 10. also i shouldn't have to look at a list of games on this site to find 10 GOOD WII GAMES. you sould'ves been able to list them off the top of your head if they were worth mentioning
