Nintendo offers up Opera browser gratis; users who paid previously get 500-point virtual console NES game in late October.
When Nintendo originally unveiled the Opera Web browser for the Wii, known as the Wii Internet Channel, it offered the program for free. However, Nintendo later announced that the browser would cost 500 Wii points (£7.50, $5) after being available gratis for a limited time.
Today, Nintendo announced that the Internet Channel is once again available on the Wii Shop Channel for free--and will cost nothing for the rest of the Wii life cycle. Users that already paid for the browser will be offered a free virtual console NES title with a value of 500 Wii points in late October. Gamers will be able to choose from titles, such as Super Mario Bros. 3, Castlevania, and platformer Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa.
The Wii and PlayStation 3 are the only consoles to include Internet browsing. The Xbox 360 does not have a dedicated browser, though Web-based applications, such as Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm* are on the way. The Wii's browser not only supports couch-friendly Web-surfing, but its Adobe Flash support also allows for streaming video from sites, such as YouTube and the BBC iPlayer in the UK, though at lower quality than a PC.
*=Last.fm is owned by GameSpotís parent company CBS Interactive.
So what about the people that got it for free when it went live? I mean the beta testers to regular internet channel. Don't we get a little something to make us less aggravated that some people are getting something fro free. OK small rant is over.
I was regretting on buying Opera browser when I read about this news but the free NES game relieved me and made me feel like a winner. Thanx Nintendo!
to sofad1970 go in to setings-go right-internet-agreement-yes-ok-I agree. thats it!! hav fun using the chanels !! (at this moment I am using the chanel right now!!xD)
can someone please help..how do i actually get this browser to work and where is it ? ive tried to connect but it wont let me it says Wii connect 24 and the shopping channel service is not been offered ? ive done a connection test and its fine ....
this is awsome i get a free game yay i bought the internet channel a while ago and im surprised i actually get some good news. the only question is how do we get this free game
I didn't mind paying for the browser in the first place (which I did, obviously). But I'll take the free VC game.
Hey Condelirios. They actually updated the Flash now. So most websites (all of them that I tried) works perfectly including videos.
I can browse a lot better on my ps3s browser, but I downloaded the free version anyway. However, I had my wii before the browser came out, and it was always 500 points.
Way to go Nintendo. Now how about dropping the price on some of the Virtual Console titles? :D I can dream yeah?
I will finally get to try Zelda Two!!! Even though I heard it sucks, it's free: so there is no drawback! :D
My wii browser was ALWAYS free. Not sure why but even after it was 500 points I still had it for free. Do I still get a free NES game? haha
Even if they didn't do this, the internet channel was well worth the points. My Computer broke down a few times and my Wii was my back up computer.
Ummm UPGRADES? It needs a serious FLASH upgrade and how about Silverlight? If they would only upgrade these things you could stream Hulu on it and netflix. COME ON Nintendo... upgrade the thing!
I forgot they started charging for this thing. I'm glad I downloaded it while it was free. It's nice that they are giving people a free game in replacement. Nintendo must have worked out some deal with the folks at Opera to make this happen. Opera is free for mobile phones and PC's; should be on consoles too. As for using the internet browsers on my consoles... I don't play the Wii that much; it's more for the kids. I do use my PS3 web browser about 1-3 times a week. If I actually would take the time, I would watch streaming videos on there too. I just prefer to play games when I get the time. _
I watch youtube videos on it because its a bigger screen and go on when somebodys using my computer.
Does anyone actually use the internet on their consoles? I got it when it was free before, checked it out, went back to my comp... @ Super-Mario-Fan The term gratis in English comes from the Latin word "gratis" meaning "for thanks".
Dont count on there EVER being a browser on the 360 because its the early 90's AOL of consoles.. they dont want you to be aware of an internet that doesnt go through them only.
*got the internet browser when it was free before* meh nothing for me :( Good for all the people that actually paid for it though (lol it's not really worth it IMO but if you don't have a PS3 I could see it being desirable)
Yes free! I got my wii just when they made it 5$ but i spent my 1000points on super metroid. I always wanted it and it proves the paitent get rewarded.
@ twztid13 - what the heck are you talking about? You can download 1000 points for $10 off your credit card. You don't need the official card. Buy a VC game, and respect the greats of the past. But if you prefer to not spend your money, and just waste it, that's fine with me.
I'm liking this. I haven't tried their web browser, but there is no excuse not to now! It's great that they are making up for the money some people spent. That shows a lot. @ jasongm: say what? You want to buy an N64 title for $5? Yous seriously think they would do that? $10 is a great deal for those titles. I wouldn't mind the NES titles being cheaper, but buying an NES and playing them would be far more expensive. You clearly are very cheap, or haven't researched the alternatives.
It would be nice if they just credited the 500 Wii points back to the account, insted of letting us choose from a few select games :?
