British reports have upcoming console's controller equipped with a front-facing camera; 3DS may be able to be used as substitute for the device.
Source: UK game-industry magazine Develop.
What we heard: Two days after footage of the Wii successor reportedly leaked, the rumors keep on coming. The latest has the controller being equipped with a front-facing camera that can "be used for in-game images." Presumably, this functionality would work similarly to the DSi and 3DS's front-facing camera, which allows players to snap pictures of themselves for certain games.
Indeed, Develop's source said that the new Wii's controller functions so much like a 3DS that the handheld may be able to be used as a substitute. "The functions are the same," the source said. "It is a standard wireless controller added with a front-facing camera and touch screen. That sounds far too much like a 3DS to me. But I can't confirm this; Nintendo is being very cautious about the details."
The source could confirm rumors that the Wii 2's controller does have a 6-inch touch screen in between a standard button layout. The source also said that the controller may have a stylus, making it even more like the DS.
The official story: US Nintendo reps declined to comment.
Bogus or not bogus?: Given the reported similarity of the Wii 2's controller and a DSi or 3DS, the addition of a camera sounds logical. However, the public won't have a final answer until Nintendo's appearance at the Electronic Entertainment Expo on the morning of June 7.
@wooten9000 A new nintendo console that will make my food? My life will be pretty much completed if it also allow me to have sex with it.
I don't understand does everyone want Nintendo to create a console that supposedly caters to the same needs the Ps3 and the x360 does? Why? If they created a console for "the hardcore gamers" there will be three identical consoles competing on the market, and that seems rather pointless when you can at least have one console that tries to be unique and a bit controversial. I love Nintendo to death, and I love that they're trying to do something different and trying to appeal to a different, and actually a wider crowd
I'm not sure how much I trust Nintendo these days. I love my Wii. I love what it represented. I love how it slapped the industry in the face and proved that HD graphics wasn't what mattered most to the customers. I loved how NSMBWii made the console sell ridiculous amounts in winter 2009. And then I thought the Wii's exploration into adapting motion controls into gaming was going to grow and expand when they came out with Motion Plus...next thing you know, Nintendo caves into pressure from the "hardcores" and the third parties, they just drop support for the Wii like a bad habit, they release the overpriced, uninteresting 3DS with a lackluster library, and now this "Project Cafe" is coming. I will definitely be playing a wait-and-see approach with this console, whatever they decide to call it (Nintendo is highly unlikely to name it "Wii 2"). Consider me highly wary and not at all excited yet.
@riccardo90 And yet it will still be less money than the inevitable 'PS4' and 'Xbox 720', who will most likely laugh at the ideas and then copy them three or four years too late. . .
All this chatter is useless to me until we start talking about a multi-core system that will allow each controller/screen to play it's own game. When that happens, then I'll start getting giddy. . .
@EbenOlemaun Hey, if your arms get tired from using the Wii's four ounce controllers (nunchuku and remote with Wiimotion+ included) for five hours, I have one sentence that can help you: Hit the weights. Try lifting soup cans if your limp wrists can't support something lighter than a single boxing glove.
People don't seem to recall just WHO Nintendo is. Nintendo (unlike Sony) is a company that makes mistakes, and then learns from them, and uses the mistakes to improve their consoles. They did it with the NES (the mistake was making it 8-bit in an era entering 16-bit) the Snes (making it with only two controller ports), the N64 (using cartridges and not discs), the Gamecube (Not many A-list games), the Wii (plenty of great games, overshadowed by the amount of bad ones, and no love for their OTHER franchises like Star Fox, 1080, Wave Race etc). Nintendo ISN'T perfect, but they DO learn from their mistakes, while Sony and Microsoft constantly keep repeating their mistakes (the slim 360 red rings JUST as much if not more than it's predecessor, and the NGP will be like the PSP in that Sony SERIOUSLY thinks it can even gain a foothold in the handheld market, also download only, which was a bad idea the first time around).
Would people stop calling it Wii 2? You ever seen a Nintendo console that had 2 at the end? They're a bit more imaginative than Sony and Microsoft when it comes to names...even if it can be a bad thing at times....like the name 'Wii' :P. Use Project Cafe instead.
@DaneGamer They sure as hell better try. Who besides Nintendo was making the stand-out games? All the others did was make little cooking and kiddie games. I think the problem was that devs did not have the time or resources to make exclusives for both Nintendo and XBOX/PS3. All they want is an equivalent system so they can simply port it over, and that's what Nintendo will do this time around, plus keep the casual market...perhaps.
@lifemeister Yeah of course they know what they are doing - but do the 3rd party developers stand a chance?
this suggests that the 3DS will be playable on the big screen, something nintendo had done with all of their past handhelds except the DS
Well that sounds pretty cool if you ask me,A Nintendo DS as the controller would be cool, but im not buying that thing,im sticking with the Wii for a while now, good luck nintendo
Guys! Guys! Calm down alright. Look, don't be so shocked about the screen and the camera. It's going to be okay. They just sold 80+ million units with the Wii, they know what they are doing. You just have to use your imagination. He's me using mine: CAMERA - hand gesture recognizing system, facial recognition, takes pictures when killed and sent to killer, and video chat on home interface. SCREEN - extension to TV, like DS, touch screen, able to see reaction shot of players without it taken up TV space, Wii2 on the go (becomes portable), video chatting, instant home menu (quick launch), displays maps, statistics while playing. The possibilities are there, devs will have more freedom to be creative with those features.
7 june ... its 2 week .... OMG I can't hold it anymore ... I hope I can watch the conference real time in GS
the wii 2 will cost us a butt load of money if they keep putting stuff on it; what to expect next? the controller making coffe for you or popping out a red bull when you get sleepy? :D aside from that, im actually looking forward to the wii2 but come on..alot of hardware means lots of money to shell out :)
O my g... After Ds, Wii, 3DS... now wiids, no no no, we want something new like the predecessors, hologram projector is just a quite good idea for you N. For me looks like N is lacking new ideas, time for MS and Sony to explore this.
Geez... The more they 'reveal' about the new Nintendo and especially the controller, the controller sounds like it's gonna cost as much as a handheld itself. This is getting kinda crazy!
A camera in controller?? lemme guess if you make a frustrating face the camera will detect and change the difficulty of the game to more easier and if you are making a confident face the camera will detect it and change the difficulty to hardest. that's the only speculation I made with this impending gimmick
Yeahhhh.. I'm beginning to think Nintendo might just be starting to lose the plot.. They did excellent with the Wii, but this seems to be getting a bit too crazy. It's a games console guys, not a swiss army knife.
so it's a controller with a camera and touch screen(or something like that) what a big mess................but it's nintendo they always try to do something out of the box......................
Just using Gimmicks to get people interested and will never get used a year after the systems been out
A camera on a controller? That sound silly, that's like someone could spy on my crotch while playing.Nasty!
I don't believe it until I see it. Nintendo use to be so amazing but now they seem to just try making a huge scene in order to get new fans. They teased all the older fans by releasing one Zelda game, two Mario galaxy games which were pretty much the same thing, one metroid game and the other M which seemed to disappoint tons of fans. No star fox, f zero, 1080, or anything really great. The new super Mario brothers game was okay buy pretty much the samething we been playing for over 20 years as well as that donkey kong game. There was only one paper Mario game at the launch date and Mario kart was terrible. Not a whole lot of classic games for over five years. I'm not even counting the horrible Mario sport games which did not really even change from the past, plus twilight princess since that was originally suppose to be a gamecube game. So Basically we did not even get a zelda game for the wii. Skyward sword was suppose to come out five months ago and I would not put it past nintendo to hold the games release for the new system. Nintendo what happened???
All I have to say is Nintendo has balls for putting a screen and camera on a controller. They're always putting themselves on the line, and mostly have come out winning and mimicked.
@okassar Exactly! Different games require different controllers, I almost think they should make a "hardcore" remote and a "casual" remote for the same console. Or just one remote that somehow transforms, like a transformer:lol: Not really BTW
Why complain about controller costs? If it comes with one, and my 3DS can be one. Then I won't have to buy any remotes:lol: So, throw on the features Nintendo, I'm ready8)
this is a rumor people, this doesn't come directly from Nintendo come on, don't believe it till you actually see the console and controller itself at E3
Baaah not interested. Nintendo should make a controller that makes you a sandwich while playing. Now that would be a great innovation in gaming.
I only have 2 questions: 1. Will it be in HD? 2. Will we get to see a new smash bros. on it, but overall i'm not gonna get excited because nintendo will release this console withanother crap library of games.
@illage2 You asked: WHY! Why do we need a Camera in a controller? Response: So I can send a picture of my johnson to your tv screen, when ever, if ever, you kill me during gameplay. Use your imagination dude, or don't be quick to judge and find out during E3.
@twyz You said: The Dreamcast had a screen on it's controller. Enough said. Response: The folks making this controller are aware of that and aren't claiming to be the first. But know this, where there was once failure, Nintendo can do miracles and turn it into success. It won't be the same buddy. Obviously, expect a bigger screen, better resolution, touch screen, and who knows what else - way more adv. than Sega's screen.
@csofran2 Imagine if you knew Nintendo already knows and they're working on it buddy. Wii2 will support better online, count on them to take it seriously this time and come up with some original stuff...you'll see, you'll be WOW'ED.
@okassar RTS game's on a touch screen are crap. I've played C&C on iPod touch and the controls were aweful.
nintendo can never have the same controller.... pretty sure nothing will be as bad as the wiimote but if these rumors are true i could be wrong:P
