Software-hardware package for Nintendo's third-generation DS includes Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story for $170.
Nintendo is certainly taking an interesting tack in promoting the launch of the DSi XL. Less than a week before it released the supersized DSi in North America, Nintendo announced its successor--the glasses-free, 3D-capable 3DS--would arrive next year. Now, with the DSi XL on store shelves for two weeks, Nintendo has announced a bundle…for its direct predecessor, the DSi.
Beginning April 25, a new Nintendo DSi bundle will be available at select US retailers. The package will be offered at the DSi's standard $170 price point and contain a white system, as well as a copy of Nintendo's action role-playing game Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.
Released for the DS stateside in September, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story was given high marks by critics, who cited its compelling storyline and varied gameplay. The RPG follows Nintendo's famous pair of plumbers on a journey through the innards of their archenemy, Bowser.
The DSi debuted in North America last April. It is 12 percent thinner than the DS Lite, with screens 17 percent larger than those of its predecessor. Though it doesn't have a Game Boy Advance slot, it boasts two cameras--a 0.3 megapixel one facing outward and a lower-resolution one for self-portraits--and an SD card slot for multimedia storage. The system is also available in blue, black, and pink in standard retail configurations.
How much do you want to bet the 3DS is just a repackaged DSi with a new screen manufactured by Sharp to give it the 3D effect. Oh yeah, they will add that 3D joystick to it also which will have limited use in most games. Sort of like the Wii motion plus on the Wii or the cameras on the DSi. I bet the resolution of the games will not be any better. They can get away with calling it the true successor because they can say whatever they want and they know most people will look at 3D as some revolutionary breakthrough in video gaming when all it really does it adds a fancy display to current hardware to give it a 3D effect.
Nintendo seem quite intent on flogging as many DSi consoles as possible, and who could blame them? From what I understand, the 3DS will include the same functionality as the DSi (i.e. larger screens, cameras, SD card support, DSiWare etc.), as well as the upgraded processor that we've been hankering for since the launch of the original DS way back in 2004/05. Once the 3DS rolls out, all the suckers who've been coaxed into buying a DSi will wish they'd resisted pimping out their wallets to the corporate pigs. Patience, my pretties. Save your cash for the 3DS.
This bundle is very random... a pokemon heart gold and soul silver dsi bundled with the games and each dsi for each version having ho oh and lugia painted on the front or something would of made more sense.
Why white. Good idea that Nintendo includes the Mario and Luigi game. It will increase user availability and might in the future offer Wi-Fi.
UGH!! I was going to get a DSi XL, but now I have to decide between that and this since I don't have Bowser's Inside Story yet! Damn you Nintendo quit giving me so many choices!!!
Bad experience with white DSs (Phat and Lite)... So the bundle is nice (for those who wants a DSi) but I suggest to avoid that color!!!
Yes, I traded a Halo edition 360 for a DSi and my bro traded a DS and my Zelda DS Lite for a DSi. We love 'em but bigger isn't always better. Needles to say, I traded a bunch of PS3 games for a new Xbox 360 and now own a NES GBA SP for my GBA game playback.
Hmm.. PSP for $169 with 128 bit graphics or DS with free game for $169. I feel cheated. I only got $10 worth of horrible DSiware. It seems that instead of Sony trying to match the DS's price, Nintendo is trying to match the price of the PSP. Unheard of.
I'm fed up with the DS. Back when it had the Metroid-vanias and The World Ends with You and the like, being released for it, it was an amazig portable. These days it is just tons of shovelware and a re-release of yet another Pokemon game. I say bring on the 3DS!
More games...who wants this? almost every person has a DS light and they love it. Unless your talking 3DS its a no go for me.
I still got my DS lite gold limited zelda edition ... and I' really fine.. no need bigger screen ... or a camera that it's worst than my cellphone's camera so .. no thx.. nintendo should worry more about the games...
@shinmew. why did you buy a dsi? your on this site so you had to know about the dsi xl before the dsi launched in the usa. unless you imported it from japan before news of a dsi xl was to launch in japan. they did the same thing again as the dsi xl launched. but now people are just waking up, and starting to get poed. because of the 3ds is a bit more of a upgrade.
Milking it for every bit it is worth. I don't make enough money to be buying every single remake of the DS. I'll stick to my little DSi and wait for the 3DS to come out.
Way to get the megapixels wrong GameStop. The inside one is 0.3 and the outside one is 3.0. But anyway, I actually see the sense in this. I mean, Nintendo stated themselves that the DSi XL wasn't meant to be a successor, more of another option. So continuing to release normal DSi bundles makes sense. They aren't rendering it obsolete. Though if the 3DS goes over they way they expect it to, it's going to obsolete soon anyway.
I bought a black DSi and launch and received ten dollars worth of download points to spend on any download game I want. I think I made the right choice. I just dont care for RPGs.
have a red Mario "M" DSi that i keep for personal collecting that i like a lot. sold my black dsi for a very nice looking bronze/black DSi XL
Ohh i thought it was the DSi XL white bundle, i was sold on the idea of it till i read its not the XL version...
Okay, so what's it gonna be Nintendo?? Just make a decision and stick with it..... Everyone else does......
xD always when i see a news about DS hardware, i assume that is a news about nintendo announcing yet ANOTHER DS hardware revision... i failed this time :P Hey, one question, there says that DSi have two cameras a 0.3 Mpx (0_o 0.3?????) one and a second, even lower resolution self-portrait camera (what if the good one is a 0.3 mpx, the crappy one is a 0.05 mpx? the pictures are something like 42x24 Pixels or what?) is that rigth? it's actually a 0.3 mpx camera and not a 3.0 mpx?
i hope in July this is still on stores, my uncle lives in the US, so he can bring this to me, this here costs 250$ :S
Bundles are announced all the time. I don't see how people are complaining. It would actually nice if "pack in" games became the standard again. I always liked that. I can understand if someone JUST purchased a dsi, but really, can't you just return it and get the bundled one?
Wow. I've wanted a DSI XL for a while now to go with my DS Lite, but Nintendo isn't making it very attractive. I think I'll just save for the 3DS
@WllDan7: I don't know that I would say the 3DS is the true successor. Considering the DSi is the closest thing to a PSP, I would conclude the DSi is the..and is..the successor. It added way more features for it to be considered one. It's damn near a handheld Wii, minus motion (but Wario slightly helps with that). It's a good bundle, and I can see the effectiveness (as can @mariostar0001 apparently).
@luffy11234: the gameboy is gone for years now. They are never making a slot for it again. They may however make gba games downloadable on the 3ds, the true successor to the ds series.
And to all those below me: The DSi isn't in competition with the DSi XL, some people will buy one and others will prefer the other, it's not supposed to be both people getting both.
not bad bundle. But im still keeping my ds lite and will only buy a new ds if it has the gba slot back.
Well I can say that even though this is a pretty decent, I'm completely left head-scratching at Nintendo less-than-genius marketing game plan. Why the hell would 1) release a color several months late (Japan's had the white since their launch) and 2) doing it all AFTER the release it's latest incarnation--the DSi XL?? I mean would that make you in direct competition against not only your competitors (well mainly Sony) but also your own handheld! Why not just release DSi XL bundle (w/ the Bowser game)? Somebody clearly did not think out this particular marketing strategy very well, did they? :|
