Watch Dogs running on new engine

Ubisoft's open-world action game powered by brand-new Disrupt engine, not Assassin's Creed tech, developer confirms.

PlayStation 4 launch title Watch Dogs is powered by an all-new proprietary game engine, according to Ubisoft technical director Sebastien Viard. The new technology is called Disrupt.

"Watch Dogs uses a brand new engine called Disrupt, developed specifically for the game at Ubisoft Montreal," Viard said. "It's not Assassin's Creed engine."

Watch Dogs is currently in development at Ubisoft Montreal, with support from the publisher's Bucharest, Paris, Quebec, and Reflections studios. In addition to the PS4, the game is coming to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC.

Set in Chicago, Watch Dogs puts players in the shoes of Aiden Pearce, a hacker who uses his smartphone to break into the city's central operating system to control things like security cameras and also to obtain personal information.

I can't wait to steal money and then chase people down for robbing others. Then proceed to kill cops for trying to stop me.

As long as the engine runs fine on the hardware, I don't mind!

@i_like_pie223 Unless they put a punishing system (which i hope that they don't) that prevents you from killing civilians/cops at will, like how they prevent killing civilians in AC series.

Maybe this is one of Ubisoft's steps to try and make PC gamers happier with their games.

damn, Ubisoft Montreal really have a lot of awesome game engine, Anvil Next, Dunia, and now Disrupt. Really excited with Watch Dogs, but i'm curious with the difference between the current-gen version and the next-gen version.

For me it's final.. Watch Dogs would go toe to toe against GTA V for game of the year.

@96augment @baszzer I'm so jealous of both of you. I have to wait like a regular person for the games to be finished and released to be able to know what they're like. :(

@flammable_zeus @baszzer Well, it's not like they're going to be terrible games. GTA V and Bioshock Infinite are made by really good developers. Past entries in both series have won many awards. The trailers for both games look great.

I'm sorry but I can't help but laugh at the narrator in the Watch Dogs PS4 Gameplay Video on this page. He really sounds like Droopy Dog and it makes it hard to enjoy the video without picturing Droopy Dog narrating.

To me it looked like a mix of Assassins Creed engine and Battlefield 3's Frostbite.  Which I enjoy both, so no complaints from me.

Well it looks great and I plan on getting it, but games being made for 2 generations kinda make me cringe. It's gonna wind up with slightly nicer graphics for the high end one most likely, not much in the way of any difference in game engine. They want to sell to the larger base for old gen, but they want to be on the next gen bandwagon two. Seems like it'll be halfassed for one or the other. Well at least the gameplay looks really inovative, I just kinda wonder what it'd be like if it was fully next gen native.

@RedLegZeff  Welcome to the way PC gamers are treated through out the console life cycle.   When the consoles refresh and everything is at parity its great however, when a generation goes on as long as the current generation you feel like you're being held back.  It's too bad this wasn't developed soley for next Gen

People thought this was the AC engine? Really?

dre256x
dre256x

@foxrock66  Because at first they said it was an updated AC engine.. So this new engine could have been in development along with this and the happen to finish the engine faster and then port it over..  Mostly like this games was only going to be current gen game and the sequel on Next Gen...

That's pretty funny to read considering this game looks like another western AAA grey brown dudebro game. Assassins Creed: Cell Phone Edition. So sick of these games. A little color and FUN couldn't hurt too :).

@Kingnova3000 @keldarironfist I've seen this comment before on a different game. Ironfist is only happy if it's a Japanese game.

@keldarironfist Are you serious? I hope that's sarcasm. A developer finally gives innovation to the player and you're still complaining... What was the last game that gave you this kind of pace and freedom? This whole hacking concept is different from any other sandbox out their, AND it has the next gen look. I'm super excited for this one.

@eternal_man101 @lilromeo0606 Who's to say he uses AT&T. If he is able to hack all sorts of electronics, then i am sure he has somehow bypassed all carrier network connections to even allow unlimited tethering...without throttling
