Warren Spector getting Lifetime Achievement award at GDCAs
Thirty-year industry veteran noted for Deus Ex and Epic Mickey to be honored at next month's awards show in San Francisco.
Next month at the 2012 Game Developers Choice Awards, Deus Ex and Epic Mickey designer Warren Spector will leave with a piece of hardware only 11 others have ever received. GDCA event organizers today announced that Spector will be the recipient of the group's Lifetime Achievement award.
The award, which was given to Lionhead Studios leader Peter Molyneux last year, "recognizes the career and achievements of a developer who has made an indelible impact on the craft of game development and games as a whole," according to event organizers.
Previous winners include Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Metal Gear Solid designer Hideo Kojima, and Civilization studio head Sid Meier.
Presently the founder of Austin, Texas-based Junction Point Studios, Spector has been in the game business for 30 years. Arguably his most famous work was 2000's original Deus Ex, which he served as producer on at Ion Studios.
Spector left Ion Studios in 2004 and formed Junction Point Studios. Disney Interactive Studios acquired the company in 2007, and the shop put out Epic Mickey in 2010 to mixed reviews.
Spector will accept his award in person at the 12th annual GDCA ceremony on Wednesday, March 7, as part of the 2012 Game Developers Conference. GameSpot will stream video of the event live.
I'd have preferred Warren Spector over Peter Molyneux any day. Well done Spector, it takes someone with a true passion to continue making games after so long.
Deus Ex? Epic Mickey? Meh. Congrats, you make overhyped games.
Congrats and well deserved! The original Deus Ex is still just as wonderful today as it was back when it was released.
@mjc0961, Before judging so quickly, look at the list of games Mr Spector worked on at Origin. Wings of Glory alone was a game I spent countless hours playing.
Deserved! Congratulations, Warren! Deus Ex is one of my most favourite games ever. And watching a few interviews with Mr Spector and seeing his presentation at various expos and conventions made me wanna become a game designer. So isn't it a great influence?
My second favorite Spector after Commander Shepard. A fine award indeed.
For pure innovation and imagination, i say Deserved!
Deus Ex1 is the crown jewel of old-school games. Thank you for bringing the best gaming experience I ever had. Modern game consumers are unlikely to appreciate this classic, but they can play DeusEx3 instead.
Judging by the picture, oldest virgin award?
I always felt Epic Mickey was underrated..yes,it had problems and wasn't all it could've been, but it was (one of) the most creative games of the year and was pretty solid considering it was technically a 'license brand game'.
Well yeah, this guy is deserving. I'm glad he got that recognition. Although, I still stand with wanting Will Wright to get it. Maybe next year.
Deserved. Even of what I played of Epic Mickey was much better than I expected (granted nothing as good as his other work). Also has one of coolest names ever.
Who? - okay, congratulations
Deus ex > all exclusives ,so yeah why not?
@mjc0961: System Shock 1, Thief, Ultima Underworld?
Oh come on, don't tell me they couldn't find someone more deserving. All they would have to do is look. Making one good game and then a bad Mickey game followed by loads of whining when it gets bad reviews isn't worthy of a LIFETIME Achievement award. Give him the "Single Achievement" award, because Deus Ex is about all he did that's worth anything (at least according to this article anyway).
It's always great to see someone who has pushed video games forward be honored.
I could care less for Epic Mickey, Dues EX is where its at.
it was deserved :)
Woo hoo! This is good news, I really like Warren Specter, Deus Ex is one of those games that effected me in major ways...my user name is a reverence to the game. Thief III was another game that really affected me, I liked being able to sneak around, breaking into places, stealing whatever I wanted and uncovering this web of lies in the process..... I've also played a little of the original Thief games but didn't get very far because they weren't my games or PC but i liked what I played. I also liked Deus Ex Invisible War, it's not nearly as good as the first game but I did like it for what it was. I never played Epic Micky [don't have a Wii] so I won't say jack but I really respect what Warren Specter has done, the good and bad, he's one of my fave developers.
Who dis? He good. Whoever he be, both Epik Micky and Dayus sex are so good, thy in suk balls? :) Congrats on dat Duck Hunt gam... !I cant wait 4 Mass Affect 5 to come out. Cuz on its good?
Deus Ex is one off the all time best games in history so he deserves this. Congratulations Mr Spector.
