I would like to see war hammer 40k be made by the group that made xcom enemy unknown! Alot of the gameplay actions and stuff were very similar! It would be awsome as a turn based strategy game!

THQ core boss Danny Bilson says true follow-up to Relic's 2009 sci-fi RTS will arrive 18 to 24 months after game's second expansion; Retribution coming in February.
As part of Gamescom 2010 yesterday, THQ took the lid off of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Retribution, the second full expansion to Relic's well-regarded sci-fi real-time strategy series. It now appears as if it will also be the last, as THQ core games vice president Danny Bilson told Eurogamer today that once Relic ships Retribution in February, the team will transition into working on Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III.
"Retribution's going to ship in February, and then we start laying out Dawn of War III," Bilson said. "You can probably expect it between 18 months and two years after that." Following Bilson's timeline, Dawn of War III's release date would fall into the August 2012 to February 2013 window.
What's more, THQ may consider adopting the same business model it is using for Relic's Company of Heroes Online with Dawn of War III. Having successfully launched a free-to-play, microtransaction-supported version of Company of Heroes in Asia in 2007, THQ said in June that it would be bringing the same free-to-play game to Western audiences this fall.
"It may be a more digital free-to-play experience with all the depth and quality of a Relic RTS," Bilson stated, before going on to note that Dawn of War III's free-to-play status hinges upon the success of Company of Heroes Online.
"It all depends on how COHO does, and how it works and how people respond to it," he continued. "If they do, that would definitely drive us to…Now Dawn of War III, either way, is going to have a much larger strategic component to it, more of a global battle going on with little tactical things, sort of MMO-like…We haven't announced anything about it, and it's still in its early formative stage, but I'm just talking to you about the brainstorming going on around it."

but wait, since THQs gone bankrupt now, and warhammer went over to SEGA's Creative Assembly, what happens to DOW3 now?
sega already had a deal going to make some warhammer fantasy game, but the aqcuisition of relic was seperate. They are now both owned by sega.
In a pen stroke sega became both the rts and the warhammer/40k source.

This was posted August 2010, so "coming February" refers to February 2011. Maximum of 24 months, or 2 years, means the game would be out by February 2013, effectively next month.
Doesn't look that'll happen, not even close, since there's no trailers, practically no news, no actual box art and no confirmed release date on its page here at GSpot. They never fail to delay releases, but this makes it seem like it might well be another good year away, at least.
So be it, let it be done when it's done; there's already more games than I have the time for.
Changes I'd like to see from DoW II:
1. More character development, greater focus on story, make each campaign mission unique and challenging in its own way (starcraft and warcraft iii had the best story-based RTS campaigns).
2. Please no more than 2 heroes, and a greater focus on troops and vehicles like in DoW 1. Hero abilities are ridiculously strong and having 4 heroes right off the bat turn the game into a cakewalk.
3. I like the wargear element, but getting gear shouldn't be the focus of the game. This isn't World of Warcraft.
4. Instead of secondary heroes, have permanent squad leaders that lead their own squads. They can be customized with wargear, but aren't very strong and their death is permanent. If you manage to keep them alive, they will level up and get stronger, but having strong squad leaders should be a perk, not a requirement for winning. When a squad leader high level enough die, you have the option of investing in a high level dreadnought (that also only has 1 life).
5. None of this ridiculous magical "helping a fellow hero up" resurrection shenanigans. How did this silly crutch concept ever make its way into gaming! Much less into dawn of war!
In essence, the pure RTS elements should be preserved with RPG perks to make the game feel richer and make it feel like you're working on a "project".
THQ you MUST roll back some of the changes you made to DoW II and make this an RTS again.
But if you create a rigid RPG system where its impossible to fail, where time invested playing=skill and the goal of players is not to win but to stack "achievements" then I will stay far, far away.
I'll be very happy if I can at least have the option of having a proper, realistic battle, instead of having all that base-building and recruitment on the skirmish map. If you want a good RTS, take lessons from the Total War series; that gets the system sorted out perfectly.
@thstratton yes because when we fight orcs we require realism! The orc fighting is just so unrealistic in RTS's..........
1 Like @Dustyn-Barlow @thstratton Granted, you have a valid point. Orks are not exactly a real entity. However, if I may offer a rebuttal. When I say 'realistic' I'm talking about the mechanics more than the subject matter. No army in history has sent its force in one squad at a time while others were just sitting around waiting to be called upon. They spend months training them, then at an opportune time send in a strong force, perhaps with some of it waiting in reserve. Oh, and when a soldier gets too scared, he doesn't shout "Unit broken" or something similar and just carry on fighting. He runs. The problem is that the designers of Dawn of War tried to take an RTS in the Age of Empires/Red Alert format and adapt it to 40K. What they should have done is take 40K and adapt it to a computer. All they would have had to do is exchange turns for realtime and dice for an event randomisation system.
imperial gaurd should have space marines and gray knights but they are like 2nd squad commander like after sargents and commisars and should have their own commander as well and be as strong as a sentinel.

4 Like I loved dow 1.. i hated dow 2.. simply put i feelt cheated. How they can call the game dow 2 when they have so little in common besides they use the same lore is beyond me. I spended my money on a sequel that is not a sequel. Unless dow 3 is the same as dow 1 in the terms of strategy (Base building , Strategic points) i wont buy it.

@palau3 so why when dow 2 came out the top players in it had never got above a 1500 ranking in dow 1?
Smaller maps and less units means less units to control and less space to do so. Dow itself is a simplified version of old school warcraft/starcraft that had you control 20-30 units or more . Each incarnation is meant to remove skill and cater to more average players to sell more games. So before you start calling other small minded and stupid perhaps you should learn some rts history and its progression.
1 Like @palau3 It is what Space Marines are, they dont go in packs of hundreds, and there are even some chapters like the Night Watch who go even with fewer numbers to achieve the impossible...I think some people see this as a game without lore...
@simon1812 True they do go in hundreds but not as usually as you make it sound..., and yes the best course of action would be that.Yes was death watch ive confused with game of thrones night watch... And they do attach to larger forces and YES each chapter has his own way of fighting but if you make them create each chapter with his own features we all love you forever, imagine the blue wolfs with the skins in their armors the wolves, the claws, etc...I do like constructions in games like this, but the way the units come to battle from those structures is silly in every game, at least in wh40k they came form space making it more realisticBla bla bla this is not a forum XD
@NuKyy do your home work, each chapters pretty much have their own way of fighting, some do go in packs of hundred (thats a company) or even small squad but they can also mobilize the whole chapter (all 10 companies) if necessary so I guess the best course of action would be for developers to allow players to play in whichever style they favor more.

Im pretty sure u are thinking of the Death Watch btw, eve though they do operate in small number as possible, it isnt uncommon to see them as a complement to a larger force or running an operation in a world where there is already an open conflict going on.
@NuKyy true there isn't much or any lore at all in this game but this is what i think makes it fun, right down to the action!

3 Like One of the main concerns I have with DOW 2 is that there is no base building. Also, there is no Necrons or Tau. If they bring those back in the next sequel, then I will definitely buy it.
I enjoyed the mechanic of DOW II. But the skirmish was really lacking, IMO. I believe the multiplayer could benefit a lot from the way the DOW II campaign was made. Something like creating 4 sergeants, for cooperative playing as well as pvp, an do missions like holding critical points. But not just spacemarines, of course.
4 Like ok some things I miss from DoW that I wish back. - base building. - not having to ask steam for permission to play.
dawnn of war 2 was the perfect upgrade in graphics and game quaitly. it made everything more realistic and beatiful i loved every aspect of the squad based fighting and hero units that can be upgraded to better fight alongside you. it was really perfect in every way. my adive to THQ is to keep the basic game enginve from dow 2 but add the bases again i love these games ive gotten every single one of the Dawn of War games and Space marine. you guys make great games so make this one the greastest one ever
The omission of base-building, resource-gathering and unit production from DoW II killed it for me, and took away one of the greatest strengths of the franchise. The squad-based gameplay should have been an addition to the game, not a total replacement. I really hope they revert back to the original premise in this upcoming sequel.
One more thing... the best and most enjoyable moments in DoW2 was the tactical prowess and how you could turn things around even when you were under pressure and in the shi**er. Like going 4 v 7 units and winning. making a lasting stand with 1-2 controls of units while your allies try to make a big push towards the enemy base... it was awesome and in tune with the general feel of DoW. But I want more... more strategy and stuff. Maybe an evolutionary type of game... get from very tactical to more strategical towards the late game... best of both worlds...
I enjoyed DoW2, I bought Retribution when it was on sale because I heard it had a very small campaign... but the MP was good and pretty solid. I do however miss the grand strategy scale of things. I mean, the only thing I disliked about DoW2 in general was the fact that the height of my strategical prowess was choosing whether to save for upgrading a tier or getting a new unit... and with 5-6 units on the board, it was very hard to manage... at least for a player like myself... semi-pro player. It was also a lot of back and forth and skirmish where as the story and the feel of the DoW universe was massacre and blood... and guts and destruction. There was no real base destruction only natural destruction...
I don't know, I got bored of DoW2 rather quickly. Dark Crusade is still my favorite, with Soul Storm a close second (if you ignore the airplanes completely). The tactics alone wasn't enough... I missed the strategy (base building, planning which sectors to invade next and which ones to protect, etc). The RPG elements of DoW2 was awesome though, and the graphics.
1 Like DoW2 was shallow compared to DoW1. They basically took the essence engine from Company of Heroes, dumbed it down and dropped the actual strategy part from it which was the basebuilding and veterancy. Sure theres microing strategy involved in DoW2 but overall DoW2 lacks and everyone knows it which is why they are going back to the massive battles in DoW3. Yes, 40K is supposed to be about killing xenos, but its also supposed to be about huge battles not squad-based skirmishes like DoW2. Also, its about base building because its an RTS, its not canon and its not supposed to be a conversion or even trying to emulate the tabletop game which is totally different. Play table top if you want it to be like table top.
What's with all the fuss matey's? DOW II is one of my fav games and ye are puttin it down. Imma really lookin forward to DOW III. How about you all?
1 Like DOW2 did a really good job of capturing the spirit of the Warhammer 40k tabletop game without making a direct conversion (which GW will never allow to happen). I think DOW3 should carry on this tradition. 40k shouldn't be about base building (just because C&C did it doesn't mean everyone has to) but about eliminating xenos in purifying flame.
I want it to be like DoW2 Retribution in terms of races like other people on here, but i want the story of DoW2, because retribution was rubbish in terms of story, but Dow2 was great. The best game for me really was winter assault, because each race in the last mission had a voice and story. If DoW3 could be like that on a larger scale, with lots of races with a race specific storyline, that isn't boring like retribution, and have proper endings not rubbish endings like retribution.
Well, personally I think DoW2 doesnt have base building because they were running out of time in production. I think originally the game was supposed to operate more like Company of Heroes, which had basebuilding *and* tactics, but due to time constraints it was removed and dumbed down, since they didnt want to be accused of just making "CoH in Space". I know a lot of people that love dow 2 dont like the basebuilding aspect of the original and prefer just tactics. But to me it seems like DoW1 had a much larger player base and a lot of people liked it better than the tacical dow 2. I personally prefer the CoH style gameplay since it has more strategy when you incorporate build orders etc. since all of the different races in DOW1 had different types of buildings that performed different functions. Maybe they can find a happy medium this time? No huge bases and spamming units, but larger maps and a bigger army?

Why can't we have some base building and tactical combat? Why can't some of the tactical combat be more automated so that we can focus more on strategy? Seriously the more you strip away having a base to build, attack, or defend the more the game just becomes a melee over a checkpoint in the middle.
Different strokes for different folks, I see DoW and DoW2 as two whole different games. Though I am a bigger fan of the original DoW and it's base building. I like the idea of harassing the enemy in the early stages of base building :P If they do make DoW3 like DoW, please do make it a bit more balanced and improve the melee kill-animations (it took forever for a force commander to kill a full squad, this also made him/her invulnerable for a short while which could be very anoying if you are focussing all you fire on him/her)
i think DoW III should be a real RTS (base-built) with great story and all the racesin it then just add new stand-alone with NEW race and soo on... you'll make MILLIONS !!!
