dota2 lol hon. They all look fun and i would happily buy one of them But i can't :( I HATE FREE TO PLAY
Half-Life creator said to confirm that it is developing a microtransaction-based title following Steam's adoption of business model.
Valve opened up its digital distribution portal Steam to in-game transactions through the Steam Wallet last September. Following that move, it seemed only natural that the Half-Life creator would bring free-to-play, microtransaction-supported titles to Steam, making this week's announcement that Valve would be doing just that no big surprise.
As the next logical progression, Valve appears to be prepping a free-to-play title of its own. Barre De Vie reports this week that Valve has plans to create a microtransaction-based title. According to the French-language gaming site, Valve's marketing head, Doug Lombardi, reportedly offered a perfunctory "yes" when asked about whether the studio was developing its own project using the business model.
Lombardi reportedly offered no additional information on the mystery title. Valve had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment as of press time.
Though the title could be an unannounced project, one other possible candidate could be DOTA 2. Due for release this year, the game is a sequel to the Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients, which melded the action genre with tower defense gameplay mechanics. A similar project from the original DOTA team, Riot Games' League of Legends, adopted the free-to-play business model upon its release in 2009.
We alrady know that Valve is moving from Ep3 to HL3, but that won't be until next gen (2013). Dota2 is probably the next f2p game from Valve, but that's not news, we know this from a while
Half-life 3 please. Lets face it Half-life 2's graphics are dated so they won't do another episode, but they could easily re-release Half-life and expansions in HD like they are doing with Halo and people would still buy them. I would also like to see the return of Adrian Shepard from Opposing Force Funny how most of us want Half-life and bearly talked about the actual topic.
Why do I get the feeling Half Life 2 Episode 3 and/or Half Life 3 is going to end up another Duke Nukem Forever fiasco and make us all wait some ridiculously long time for it? Oh wait, too late!
@Majkic666 Because I am pretty sure I read somewhere that Valve canceled the Episode project. So the next Half Life we'll see is 3 with a new engine probably.
@dinuattila Dude, you will not see half-life 3 for many years! Half-life 2 EP3 is first on the line so why dont you learn to say HL2 EP3 instead of HL3
@gbrading, maybe they ARE talking about it. Half Life 3, free to play! Oh, want to upgrade from the crowbar? Sure, just $3. Oh dear, your chain gun is out of ammo. No problem, more ammo just costs one penny per bullet! Wow, that courtyard is crawling with headcrabs - but wait, there's a secret path around the courtyard! Just $2 to open the lock!
Valve are willing to talk about this but they don't say a word about any new Half-Life game? I really don't understand them sometimes...
Zero interest in this...waiting for Episode 3. Portal 2 was nice but we are waiting for Godot, uh I mean Gordon.
That's cool and all but how about giving us HL2 Ep 3 instead? And release another package like Orange Box. I'm thinking $40 and it would include Half-Life 1, all of the HL1 expansions, HL2, HL2 Eps 1-3, the most recent Counter-Strike, TF2 with all of the most recent updates, Portal 1, & Portal 2. Than make all of the achievements in them re-obtainable seperate from tOB (like the XBLA and OB verison of Portal were separate.) I would love to have HL1 with cheevos on the 360 and I would love an excuse to go through HL2 and Portal again. TF2 is unfortunately unplayable on 360 after playing the PC version up-to-date and I've wanted a Counter-Strike on the 360 ever since I played the original one on Xbox.
@HolyCrusaderX Lol probably not gonna buy it for that price... They will probably added to the Orange Box 2 with Half-life 2 EP3, Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2 (and maybe they will add Portal 2 to it when it comes to that)
Maybe they'll have both a regular and F2P Dota 2. You could either just buy the game and have all characters unlocked or you could play the free version and just buy individual characters.
When I saw those f2p titles on Steam I was excited; even more when I saw Global Agenda as one of them!! That game rocks indeed!!!
Don't make Dota2 f2p x_x put it 20 or 30 bucks and we are good to go, not that BS of purchasing heroes...
Even if it's a free game with rediming quaility like Alien Swarm, I'll pay Valve for Half Life 2 Ep3 first day... if it ever happens! :$
Dota, oh no, not that bore, booring coz bored to play years same game, want something new or unique, not a clone of existing game..
Didn't Runic games make Torchlight? Anyway, it might be DotA2, how many F2P title does Valve want to make?
Um... I'm sorry, but Runic Games didn't make League of Legends - you're looking for RIOT Games... ;)
There is a rumor floating around the steam fourms that the F2P game could be TF2. I hope it's not true.
No unless spend more then 16 dollars a month. Even WOW has microtrasactions and you pay a monthly fee. I agree the items in the LOL shop are much better and interesting then DOTA but who is to say DOTA 2 won't steal from LOL?
Maybe I'm alone here, but aren't microtransactions kind of detrimental to the playerbase? Don't you end up paying more for the full game experience? I always hate the idea that I have to pay extra to unlock over half of the game. I'd rather pay a subscription or just buy the game at full price. And there are always demos to let people know if they'll like a game before buying it.
@ Blue_fin After playing DOTA for about 5 years i can easily say LoL is way better in just about every way. Oh no I can't deny creeps, big deal. You lost the horrible idea of killing your own units and replace it with improvements across the board in all categories. Oh, and you lose powerups too.
I love valve but not sure about dota 2. I play LoL casually, dota 2 has got to offer tons of playable champs and diversify the maps a bit to compete
Lol is great for NOOBS, if you guys want some competitive online game like lol, then dota is the answer. of course DOTA is backdated game with extra extra lame graphics and a very small range of item build ups compred to LOL, but dota is way more technical and more team oriented game. for instance you can kill your own creeps by performing last hit which denies the opponent from getting gold and valuable exp.
@xmootoo95 Then they don't have to call it Half-Life 3 or Episode 3. Just give it a subtitle instead. ANYTHING! I just yearn for it. =P L4D3 would be nice at some point in the next couple of years too. =)
Valve Is starting To get Interesting For Me.I didn't Like it So much At first But When i played LFD1&2 and Portal2, i started to think it is a good company
haven't played a F2P MMO that allowed players to buy better weapons and gear. The F2P MMO that I have played sold XP boost, health pots, vanity loot and items of that nature.
I'm 99% sure it'll be DotA 2. I saw it in some video on youtube, Gabe said, "First we have to ship Portal 2, then DotA 2..."
Every company is gonna make a 'free to play' game, but eventually, to advance in the game and get better weapons and stuff, you're gonna have to give in to the micro transaction business.
Been an avid DotA player since 2007 I'm so looking forward to this, its from VALVE!! I mean what could go wrong.IceFrog FTW!
Screw this DOTA 2 cr@p - make HL 2 Episode 3 already ! How hard can it be to make a happy end where Gordon kills all the bad guys and gets to play around with Alex in the end ... sheesh. EDIT: And btw - it's Riot Games ... Runic games are the people behind Torchlight ... totally different stuff here ...
This is definitely something Valve could use to get right into the Asian market. Lots of Chinese and Korean MMOs for example are all F2P with micro-transactions and are all fairly successful in Asia. Very smart business move on Valve's part.
Valve should make a pre-paid card for Steam, so I dont have to ask my parents or siblings to use their credit card to buy.
