US console sales charts: July 2-8
Soccer games run all over Mario, Brain Age; price drops on BestBuy.com propel older handheld titles into the top 10.
What happens when gaming's summer release schedule slows down? Cash-conscious gamers seek shelter in the shade of sales, picking up older games for discounted prices. This past week, BestBuy.com cleared out some inventory on some handheld games.
Jumping from out of nowhere and into the number-two slot of the week's best sellers was Drill Dozer for the Game Boy Advance. The highly rated game, which was released on February 6, benefited from a price slashed all the way down to $10 and has since sold out. Death Jr. for the PlayStation Portable also received a budget-priced boost, up to number six, as did number 13, Battles of Prince of Persia for the DS.
The excitement of the World Cup convinced gamers to play some virtual footie, as the PlayStation 2 version of 2006 FIFA World Cup made like Italy and landed in the number-one spot. Not far behind it at number three was the Xbox version, and the seven, eight, and nine spots went to the Xbox 360, GameCube, and PSP editions of the game, respectively. The beautiful game wasn't done there, however, as the 10th slot went to FIFA Soccer 2006 for the PlayStation 2.
DS-mania may be slowing down a bit, as Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day and New Super Mario Bros., two games that have been in the top three for months, slipped to numbers four and five, respectively.
The new release for the Xbox 360, Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth II, failed to battle its way into the top 10 by one. However, older 360 titles made the top 20, including Major League Baseball 2K6 (13th), Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (15th), The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (17th), and Over G Fighters (19th).

FOOTBALL KICKED DAT ARSE this week. Umm, Im waitin for ps3 tho. I dismantled my ps2 so i can't really use it.... Yea.
shattapinks My thoughts. It took too long for this game to reach on the charts. If anyone had played the already excellent FIFA 06, then they would have known that FIFA World Cup 2006 would have been a killer game. Next, for all the haters out there. Please stop with the comparison of Winning Eleven and FIFA Soccer. I own both games, and although I have to admit that I play both recently released FIFA's more than Winning Eleven 8 and 9 I would find it hard to compare both games because I love them both. So please stop the hating and just show some love to what is known all around the world as the "beautiful sport." er I think you mean "beautiful game"
"Gamespot should get the weekly game sales from NPD. instead of Best Buy." I dont think NPD does weekly sales releases, but i could be wrong.
SmashBrosLegend ok people. please stop discreditng the BestBuy sales charts. it is a proven fact that small sample sales reflect the tendancies of the overall population. I would have to agree. Surveys and polls are the same. Even though it may seem like a small sample, it is most often large enough to tell us what the general trend is. Is it perfect? Of course not it gives us an idea of what is happening.
ok people. please stop discreditng the BestBuy sales charts. it is a proven fact that small sample sales reflect the tendancies of the overall population. that is how they see who is ahead in political office races. take a survey of 1000 people in your area before the next election, and i guarantee that the person who gets the majority of that vote will win the election. these charts may not be 100% accurate, but the really are a strong indicator of the overall sales.
on RevolutionFreaks comment...nice.. but anyways, soccer (football) is a popular game worldwide, sure its not as big in america (maybe its because we'll probably never win the world cup) but we got alot of fans here as well.
the PSP may be in there this week, but like every other time the PSP has come into the charts, it will drop out next week for sure.

a gc game even tho it's fifa that's pretty new
Why FIFA 06, a game from 2005, in this sales charts from 2006?!? :o
My prediction for next week is that at least 6 of the eight newbies will be gone from the list.
great to see soccer sell here cuz i thought we were to good for soccer. i bought winning eleven 9 and it kicks fifa 06 in the balls. i will buy fifa 07 this fall though because it has the licenses and comes out earlier.
Fifa rocks!! I have so much fun with that version of the game.
Fifa rocks!! I have so much fun with that version of the game.
Gamespot wouldn't have to use weekly sales from Best Buyy if actually NDP stepped up its game. If they want to charge for their stats then they need to do a proficient job by: 1. Getting data from WALMART, the biggest retailer in North America. 2. Adding results from US based online retailers? 3. Releasing weekly sales data.
PSP games in the Top 10 list?? That's a BIG first!! And it's good that Drill Dozer is 10 bucks, it's a fun game. It's just kinda not worth the hard mode it has....
yea i think gamespot shud get them from the NPD also... and i also agree..that if u want a soccer game do not buy WC FIFA06..its an alright game but Winning Eleven is much better
Gamespot should get the weekly game sales from NPD. instead of Best Buy.
Why do people buy Fifa, Winning Eleven is 20 times better
So does this mean people who shop at Best Buy love soccer? Just don't play real life soccer in the stores then, you break it you buy it.
PSP holding their own. Oh, and I still stick by my belief that I would rather play the sport in real-life than in a video game (I like to get out) so no FIFA for me. To each his own though.
Hell yeah, Soccer reigns sumpreme :)
Wow big surprise huh
The world most beautiful sport is #1
OMG! Drill Dozer for $10! I'd definitely buy that.
Jeez EA is rich. Why does US Console Sales have nothing to do with consoles? How many consoles are they selling dammit?!?
world cup soccer= the worlds population battling it out over more territory than they can occupy, then the majority of the time it ends in a tie and nobody gets anywhere...any1 see the connection?
Now that the world cup is over, Soccer fever should winding down. Its good to see some older titles up there in the top ten though.
The Beautiful Game Strikes, Congratulations to Italy, is behind Brazil's ass.
Fifa 06...Prepare to say 'Why would you pass it at that angle', and 'that's not who I passed it to' alot.
I'd buy Drill Dozer for $10 too :P As it is I'm still holding off on that one. So many games, so little time.
Wow, the World Cup really helped out the soccer games. I didn't buy any of the games but I am an American who has always enjoyed soccer.
Wow, I guess this confirms that the summer drought is on. FIFA World Cup 06 supposidly sucks & yet everyone will buy it because its EA. Congrats to Drill Dozer at least. I guess its clear what games GBA & PSP players haved picked up recently & we all know what people are playing on their new DS Lites.
yes fifa the best soccer game and even in Uk FIFA is the best selling soccer game because pev5 sucks,PS 2 and psp rock, where are all the ds fanboys who always say that the psp doesn't sell well

:o 6 Soccer games! I didn't knew Americans like Football that much! Soccer is called Football in all countries except America....
metroidlink1030: "*sigh* American mainstream gamers' mindsets are truly sad. "Oh look, this sport is on TV right now, let's buy the game!" That's pathetic. Oh well, just more money for EA to make crappy games, I guess." Jeez, what is with the elitist' attitude? I'm one of those people who happened to decide to really watch the World Cup this year and make an effort to understand why so many people love soccer...turns out I really like the game and will try and follow the Premiership when it starts up again. So, during the WC, I also went and bought FIFA World Cup '06...I didn't just run out and get it though but instead read the reviews about it and decided it was something that would fit my playing level since I am a big soccer novice. It isn't a crappy game and I am learning a lot about different strategies from it... The only thing I find pathetic is someone insulting people for happening to like something new.
Yes,PSP still hangin' in there:)
frustrating to say the least. shouldn't soccer games have dominated in the week or two prior to the cup? and if a soccer game is going to dominate, why doesn't quality dominate? winning eleven puts fifa to shame. it's like the 2k series vs. madden. why do people consitently buy the inferior product?
We will see prey and battle for middle earth 2 for the xbox 360 on the top 10 list next week...
interesting to see football/ soccer games make it in the US charts, the world cup must of had a big impact over there.
Interesting mix of consoles on that line-up. And what is more! A Gamecube game on the list! I need to scoop up Brain Training while I'm thinking about it. No pun intended.
Wow! Soccer fever strikes the US! 6 2006 FIFA World Cups on the chart! Amazing. And Drill Dozer?! Now people buy it....*sigh* Brain Age and NSMB still on charts...No surprise there...But Death Jr?!? I'm sorry but that game sucked...Why are people buying it NOW anyway?
faridmon, don't look too much into it. The only reason there are so many soccer games on the list is because there were no big releases. Wait until this week's list with Prey.
haha, america with football, wow, finally guys now you know how good football is, but siriously buy pro evoulution soccer, FIFA is for junkies, nice to see drill dozer up there it is really fun game.
I like Best Buy and all but why get the sales only from Best Buy?
fifa sucks . it `s not a football game play winning eleven and u never back to play fifa
man, winning eleven 9 is such a better game too...
waiting for august releases...
Summertime is for outdoor fun!
