UK Chart: Tomb Raider first, God of War: Ascension sells half of predecessor

Tomb Raider tops chart for second week running, while StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm launches in third place and SimCity drops down to fifth.

Tomb Raider has topped the UK chart for the second week in a row, with a 72 percent drop in sales from last week still enough to force Sony's God of War: Ascension into a second place finish.

God of War: Ascension managed less than half of the week one sales than its predecessor God of War III did in 2010, though it's the second-biggest opening for a title in God of War series so far.

Blizzard's StarCraft II expansion Heart of the Swarm finished third, ahead of Namco Bandai's Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 in fourth. The original Sniper never managed a chart finish above eighth.

SimCity dropped to fifth place, ahead of FIFA 13 in sixth.

Far Cry 3 charted seventh, Crysis 3 eighth, Call of Duty: Black Ops II ninth, and The Sims 3: University Life in tenth.

My interest for this game is pretty limited simply because it's a prequel. Maybe I'll get it someday. It's just that in God of War 3, Kratos was at his peak in power. Once you've seen super Saiyan 3 it's kinda hard going back to just a regular Saiyan, just sayin (lol). Or does it really have as many epic moments? Anyone finished it yet?

@shadow580  It's odd.  Playing the first 30 minutes of Ascension, I was like, eh.  If you've played the demo, that's the beginning.  Pretty epic looking but I was just going through the motions.  But something happened about an hour into the game that struck a cord with me and I realized that there's still life in this franchise.  The play mechanics are at their best here. The story only serves to move the action and puzzles along.  I think the Uncharted series spoiled everyone with it's cohesive story telling with really likable characters. 

     Bottom line:  I thought at first that I wasn't going to like Ascension as much as the others, but it eventually set its hooks in me, and I'm the kind of guy that has a lot of unfinished (and highly rated) games sitting on my shelf.  I'm sure that I'll be finishing this great game really soon, possibly playing through it a second time in a few months.  

      The only drawback of this game is its familiarity.  8.5

GoW:A is really disappointing. I love this series. I'd rate all the other GoW games 9.5 or above but I'm not enjoying Ascension. It just feels completely soulless. I don't even feel like finishing it. I think I'm about half way through, I'll probably return it before I get near the end. How did they let this happen?

The GoW games all run into the problem of feeling like "more of the same", but every other GoW game had some sort of "WOW" factor to it. Ascension has very little.

TR does deserve it ! I look at TR as the beginning of the gaming generation and after all this time they actually got better ! and I thought years ago that they were already there ! TR has captured a place in my heart forever ( even if this sounds corny ) ? .....

well at least its the 2nd highest launch for the series. hope it does good. still dont get why they would still keep doing prequals. i hope thats the end of the series really. kratos deserves that.

The GoW demo convinced me to wait until it drops to $30. I just wasn't that excited to play the full version. Not at $60 anyway.

@OHGFawx  I said the same thing after I played the demo.  As epic as the game looks in the beginning, it's honestly the worst part of the game so far.  I'm near the end now.  I'm glad I got it now instead of waiting only because I know I won't have any time for this when InJustice and The Last of Us comes out.  

   And then the PS4 will be here before I know it.

Not surprised with the GOW sales...the series has been somewhat milked without a successful online mode like Halo and COD....you almost have to have a successful online community for a game to keep selling ridiculous amounts with so many titles and it seems the only genre that manages to do that is FPS....and RTS but that's less common on consoles...GOW is great fun but it is more of the same with little else to convince gamers of a purchase....still sold a buttload just not for the series

The problem with God of war Acension is that it had too much of that, "been there done that" feeling. In the first half of the game I was actually bored. I still think GOW3 is the best in the series.

I didn't know that the creative director for God of war 2, Cory Barlog was actually the creative director for the first 8 months of development for GOW3. Which begs the question, how much of GOW3 was actually him? I mean Gow 2 is considered the best by many gamers, and so is Gow3...

Also who is Tom Pappy? Thanks for making the most boring gow game in the franchise.

@Hellhound30x  lol.  Cory left soon after GOW 2 was completed.  His impact on GOW 3 was minimal at best.   And it was Todd Pappy.   I agree the story is the less interesting, and the game play is becoming too familiar, but like COD, they did improve on the fighting mechanics.   The best so far.    But not the best game in the series.  Still very good though.

@Hellhound30x Todd Pappy was the Art director for GoW3. David Jaffe & Cory Barlog took the series to whole new level. Sad thing they left.

@ThugLord32 I think it was more Cory than Jaffe. Yes Jaffe was the one with the vision for Gow, but Cory was the best. What ever happened to Stig A.?

And I thought it was Charlie Wen who did the art?

@Hellhound30x @ThugLord32 sorry my bad.. Todd was Design Director for GOW3. After watching those videos in extras of GOW2, one can easily say how committed he was to deliver a masterpiece like GOW2.

I guess it depends on what game. COD yes. Batman Arkham Asylum vs City were different enough to hold my attention.

Love kratos to death, but after the 2 vita releases that hit on the backstory of Kratos, GOW Ascension is more of the same mix of backstory. Its good game but  Obvious gamers are done with copy paste games like call of duty series, crysis, I think gears of war judgement is gonna be in trouble with this, now add GOW series. Check out new tomb raider, let me emphasive the NEW in that, crystal dynamics flipped the switch and GOW should do the same

The God of War devs are clearly very talented, but maybe it's time to make a new ip?  Game fatigue definitely exists.

I'm a little bit surprised by this as God of War has actually been pretty heavily advertised.  I don't watch a lot of TV but I've seen the ad three or four times (during various football matches on ITV/ITV4 and I think on Five during The Mentalist) but not one for Tomb Raider.  Admittedly, the ads didn't really say a lot about the game but that didn't stop people buying utter drivel for the Wii and DS.

After 5 games, I just don't give a damn about Kraty pants any more.  The series needs a new main character, different setting and new mythos.  I'd really dig a GoW using norse mythology with Thor as the main baddie.

I'd wish that they would put on in modern times. I don't remember if it was GoW 2 or 3, but Cronus' body had been unearthed in modern times. Evil could be unleashed beacuse of it and the Ghost of Sparta would need to fuse his soul into a new protagonist in order to fight back against whatever is the main baddie of the Modern GoW.

Finally people are starting to see how big of a crybaby Kratos is.  "I got my tail kicked in battle.  I'm dying, please give me the strength that I don't have so I can actually fight well this time, Wahhh wahh waahhh".


Meanwhile "The Last of Us girl (The new Lara Croft)" and the great awesome Starcraft 2: HOTS are in the top 3.

I don't think you quite understood by what I mean when I referred to Kratos as a "crybaby". It doesn't mean that he literally cries, I mean that he acts like a baby that throws temper tantrums when he doesn't get his own way. All he does is whine and yell and scream in-between his immature tantrums.
