Ubisoft working on new racing IP 'The Crew' – Report

Dan Chiappini

Game will reportedly be positioned against Forza and Gran Turismo; targeting Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Ubisoft is working on a new, next-generation racing franchise, called The Crew, according to a report by The Examiner (via Juexvideo and Futura-Techno).

The game is reportedly being developed by French studio Ivory Tower by a team made up of former Eden Games employees. According to reports, it will be targeting the Xbox One and PlayStation 4; no mention has been made if the game will also appear on current-generation consoles.

The studio's website lists staff with previous game credits spanning Need for Speed, V-Rally, and the Test Drive Unlimited series. Unnamed sources close to the game’s development have claimed the game will be a "realistic title, possibly being positioned against Forza and Gran Turismo".

The Ivory Tower website currently includes a range of available jobs, such as a senior gameplay programmer, which details the role as "working exclusively with Ubisoft, the Ivory Tower development studio is recruiting a Senior Gameplay Programmer to work on an ambitious project using next generation technologies".

GameSpot contacted Ubisoft to verify the claims. A spokesperson declined, saying "Ubisoft does not comment on rumours or speculation".

The Crew? Is it a pit crew simulator?

They should do a Driver: The Party Game

Car Capture the flag, Pizza taxi, Car Soccer, Cops and Robbers, Closed track and open checkpoint races, Demolition derby... And make the gameplay cool like the first couple of Drivers and none of the Shift-Boost blabla gimmicks. It should feel like you're in a 90's city driving a 60's car with absurd objectives.

The name made it sound like an RPG. It would be so cool to have a racing game which actually had meaningful characters and character interactions. :)

I'm sure there is one or two games like that somewhere, (possibly Japanese) but haven't read about any in the mainstream press for a while.

I can predict that by the end of next gen, we will have The Crew 6.

I still want a new Rallisport Challenge.

Not sure why Ubi would even attempt this. Gran Turismo and Forza are the kings of sim racing. In my opinion, it's a waste of resources, time, and money trying to compete against those games.

racing simulator is a tough competition, but if EA can take a bite of the cake with something awful like Shift, maybe The Crew could get a chance.

i hope Ubisoft won't forget about Driver, San Francisco is so awesome.

In stead of car based games, we need motorcycle racing games...just saying...

Taking on Forza and GT? Good luck with that, and DriveClub doesn't look like a slouch either. They better aim their sights at NFS, hell Codemasters games are decent too, they've got some stiff competition.

If they are trying to position against Forza and GT then they had better bring something brilliant to the table.

If this turns out to be an average arcade racing rip off.. then I am out of it. Who needs more Ridge Racer wannabes ???

I would've thought Ubisoft Reflections would've been developing it, maybe they're making a new open world Driver allowing you to get out of your car. That would be awesome

I was hoping they were making a true successor to the first test drive unlimited.

DARN IT!

Not that I doubt Ubisoft, but to compete against the likes of Forza and Gran Turismo, you'll need a better name than "The Crew". Especially if it's a sim racing game. The Crew sounds like some cheap Street Racing Syndicate or Fast & Furious knock-off. Hopefully it's awesome! We could always use some more great racing games (that aren't Codemasters). Haha

Too bad they don't continue the Driver series.  San Francisco was pretty fun and it's different from typical racers like Forza and Gran Torismo.

I'm sure Reflections are busy on another installment, they just tend to work in secrecy until the game is nearly done. They're supporting the Watch Dogs team currently I believe.

Based on their latest decisions, I assume it's "Assassin's Creed V"..

By the time GT7 arrives on the PS4, all three next-gen launch or 2014 racers (NFS, Forza, Ubisoft's version) will be outdated. So I don't really see anything positioned against it. That said, I highly doubt Ubisoft's version will be a simulation, most likely an arcade racer like NFS - this quote gives it away, 'staff with previous game credits spanning Need for Speed, V-Rally, and the Test Drive Unlimited series.' Let us leave simulation racers to the experts: Polyphony Digital and Codemasters.

@alchie11

By the time GT7 comes to the PS4, all those three racers will have sequels.  Because the minimum three years spawn life of each GT title.  (means in 2016-2017 at the very minimum)

Second : there is no relation between  staff working on previous arcade titles, and the ability to build on a racing simulator.

Third : There is no such thing as experts in racing simulators.  Kaz and PD in fact, need some competition to start wondering again why they were leaders with GT1 and GT2; and are now building shitty car collector simulators.

There are plenty of teams I'd class as experts in racing simulators, ISI, Reiza, Kunos and so on. Unfortunately, they stick to PC games, with the exception being Slightly Mad Studios who have more than a decade of sim experience and are bringing their crowdfunded 'Project CARS' to all consoles in order to directly rival both GT and Forza in 2014.

I lost faith in Ubi after AC3 but regained faith after far cry3. Who knows, if done right it could be good...

@Virgin101 Yeah but what if they start driving FC into the ground with annual releases it'll taint another great series...

Everyone is making a racer nowadays it seems.

If the industry isn't careful racers are going to go the way of the flight sim.

@GSGuy321  True, True

sadly though its quite a shame that developers aren't making motorcycle-based racing games these days, though I have to give credit to Polyphony for crafting the awesome game known as Tourist Trophy...the only real motorcycle game even till this day.

I dont like ubisoft that much, they made a mockery of my favorite game series, Heroes of Might and Magic. but they are making good effort at making multiple new IP so lets see how it goes.

My racer of choice is Carmageddon
