Sources say French publisher a frontrunner in bid to acquire bankrupt firm's studios and franchises, holding out for "bargain buy."
Assassin's Creed publisher Ubisoft is reportedly one of the top candidates interested in purchasing THQ's assets, following the company's bankruptcy filing this week. Sources have told MCV that the French publisher has shown interest in buying THQ's wholly-owned studios and franchises.
THQ's internal studios include Relic Entertainment, Volition, THQ Montreal, and Vigil Games. Some of the companies biggest properties are Saints Row, Red Faction, Homefront, Metro, and Company of Heroes.
This is not the first time Ubisoft has publicly acknowledged interest in THQ's properties. Last month, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said, "They have good things. We are always interested in good brands. For sure, it's something we can consider, but I can't tell you more."
MCV's sources say Ubisoft has held "lengthy discussions" with THQ to get a deal done. One of the main sticking points in the negotiations, according to the sources, is that of price. Ubisoft is reportedly interested in a "bargain buy," and will hold out until THQ decides to sell specific properties instead of a total package.
Representatives from THQ and Ubisoft were not immediately available to comment.
I bet ubisoft is deeply interested in buying THQ Montreal studio...Because it holds the trump card : Patrice Désilets..If this happens well Patrice Ubisoft is your destiny then :)
Ubisoft buying THQ doesn't mean games will ship full of bugs, just like Disney acquiring Marvel doesn't mean we'll see Mickey Mouse in a Spiderman movie.
It's almost a certainty that they would keep the current studios and developers instead of going through a costly redesign and hiring new people.
That being said, new games coming from THQ will still have the same quality regardless of what company buys it, as long as it's interested in funding the development of those games.
Ubisoft has turned everything into crap last couple years. So i guess thats company of heroes 2 down the pooper now.
What!?!? Microsoft hasn't bought them yet? What are they waiting for? They could buy Ubisoft and TH-Q, that way both companies would be happy together. lol!!
@blackace Haha that idea makes me shudder. Microsoft Studios has a track record of acquiring good game dev companies and then shutting them down. I don't want to see that happen to THQ's subsidiaries or Ubisoft's regional divisions lol.
If this means COH2 getting any kind of DRM other then Steam it will mean me canceling my pre-order. I am actualy suprised to the many positive reactions to this. I am a gamer and I like many different games. What I don't like is having to start Origin for Battlefield. Uplay for Farcry, Stardock for Fallen Enchantress and so on.
The way I see it the best that could happen is that simple investors pump money into THQ to give it a heavy balance and nothing else changes.
I'll be happy if Ubisoft buys THQ, that way I can still play the awesome titles scheduled for 2013 and hopefully Ubisoft will save some titles!
@CrushedGear that cant be true seeing as in the next year THQ wont exist... the free market says you're wrong
@larkin-54 Its my opinion.....i have always like darksiders, wwe and saints row franchises better than assassin's creed or prince of persia , I dont know about 2013 but i do hope Ubisoft doesn't spoil the aforementioned franchises!!
I agree with you. If THQ will be bought by Ubisoft a lot more godd games will be released with a lot of bugs.
There will probably never be a correlation with the two games...but having an Assassin's' Creed free running system in a Saint's Row game would be TIGHT!!!
They said this deal has no interruptions in progress of development. Let just hope that.... CoH and Metro will be release on schedule....
@flashn00b Games Workshop licensed 40k to THQ back in '01 if I remember, for Fire Warrior and then handed it off to Relic in '04. I guess it would makes sense for Ubisoft to keep that franchise going by acquiring the license from Games Workshop and letting Relic continue to make DoW. We've seen it happen with other franchises. Unless there's some legal weirdness with the licensing that I'm unaware of, we may not have seen the last of Relic doing 40k :D
Patrice Désilets father Assassins Creed franchise returns to ubi. Beneficial for Assassins Creed franchise. Patrice Désilets is brilliant.
great so now I'll get more DRM and "online passes" lol. Hopefully they'll keep the studios they buy intact so someone at Ubisoft can put out a decent PC version of a game.
Yeah ubisoft is a great dev , one of the remaining few who keep on pushing games to the pc , please ubi take over voliation inc and give us saints row 4
Of all the companies that could buy out THQ's assets, Ubisoft is the one who I think would do the best job with those properties. I hope it works out for both companies.
last night i wast playing Far Cry 3....and Suddenly thought that Ubi should buy this franchise and my wish for Christmas came true?.shit!! Should have been wished for Bugatti Veyron Sports Edition
Far Cry is already an ubi franchise.. wtf re u talkin about ?
BTW those given above are the least popular titles compared to THQ's biggest title W40K ..Again not mentioning Darksiders is an interesting choice when instead talkin about a finished saga (red faction)
just saying i really havent like alot of ubi games but i recently picked up ac3 and its a really good game i love it havent played a game that good in awhile. thq has managed to screw up every title that i have ever played by them and mainly the wwe games offline was great in 13 but online is the worst in years either goes split screen or the match never ends because the pin system is messed up online and a 3yr old could kick out of the pin its that easy. hopefully whomever buys the rights to there titles does a good job well ill say this it cant be worse than they are lol.
oh this would be awesomeq had this coming for awhile now im so glad thq may you never rest in peace.
Wouldn't be too bad a deal. Ubisoft is one of the few big publishers with a pretty good catalog. Hell, GOG already has a good bit of Ubisoft's 6th gen stuff. Throw us some of THQ's 6th gen goodies DRM-free as well.
Hell, the first Far Cry while we're at it!
And the 6th gen Prince of Persia games.
And the 6th gen Splinter Cell games.
And the Rayman series.
And Beyond Good & Evil!
