Ubisoft sales nearly double

First quarter of French publisher's fiscal year shows revenues up more than 90 percent on strength of Rainbow Six Vegas, Surf's Up.

US retail game sales aren't the only part of the industry that's been up recently. French publisher Ubisoft today reported results from its first quarter of the fiscal year (the three months ended June 30), and the publisher is touting sales up more than 90 percent from the same quarter the year before.

Ubisoft's first-quarter sales totaled 134 million euros ($185.21 million), compared to 70 million euros ($96.77 million) for the first quarter of its 2006-2007 fiscal year. The publisher attributed the spike to continued sales of Rainbow Six Vegas for the Xbox 360 combined with the game's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable launches. Other titles receiving a nod included Surf's Up, Prince of Persia Classic, Call of Juarez, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Ubisoft published the PS3 version of the game in Europe). Older titles also bolstered the bottom line, with catalog releases accounting for a third of revenues, led by the publisher's Petz series and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

"Momentum was particularly strong during the period for European sales, which climbed 109 percent thanks to the ramp-up of new-generation consoles and the impact of PS3 game sales, including Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas and Oblivion," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in a statement. "Our performance during this quarter has once again proved the relevance of our early positioning in the casual gaming sector, as demonstrated by the success of our DS and Wii games."

DS sales made up 16 percent of the company's revenue for the quarter, as opposed to just 3 percent for the year before. Meanwhile, games for Nintendo's Wii were credited with 13 percent of Ubisoft's quarterly take.

The company also leaned on the PS3 for the quarter, with Sony's latest platform accounting for 21 percent of Ubisoft's sales. Those gains came at the expense of the PC platform, which constituted 43 percent of the company's first-quarter sales the previous year with the PC releases of Heroes of Might and Magic V and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. For this year's first quarter, PC sales accounted for only 6 percent of Ubisoft's revenue.

The first-quarter results were rosy enough that Ubisoft has raised its full-year sales target from 800 million euros ($1.11 billion) to 825 million euros ($1.14 billion). However, its expectations for the current quarter--set to be highlighted by the release of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 on the PS3, PC, and PSP--stayed put at 105 million euros ($145.16 million).

I wonder what Ubisoft has against the PlayStation 3? I will be surprised if they EVER release a PlayStation 3 exclusive this gen. Haze doesn't count because ot was going to the 360 a week after the PS3 release until Sony paid Ubisoft to only release it for the PS3 in 2007.

Ubi will make even more money with Assassin's Creed. This company is probably the best multi-platform Publisher and Developer ever to grace the video game industry, either this one or Take Two.

Soon you will see Ubisoft in the same spot as Atari and take 2... I don't believe that sales double with only a bit better than average games. I just don't get it. If it's true, buy Konami stock cause with MGS4 their sales will jump to 99999%. i'm kidding.

go ubisoft!!, now gamespot tell us all how the ps3 sales went up 130%!!

This company is smart. They're in bed with everybody. I wish Japanese publishers/developers weren't as discriminating.

Ubi is gangsta - I don't play Rainbow 6 anymore due to glitches - I even see cats flying around in the air sometimes in Vault - Very annoying... I hope that their second verison of the game (which still needs to finish the storyline for those that forgot) is abit more stable - so players... dont... yanno, FLY - SHOOT UNDER DOORS, SHOOT THROUGH SODA MACHINES yadda yadda... Loved the game when it was new though - now its a different world.

Wow i guess theymade a ton of many by porting all of their 360 2006 lineup to the ps3. I cant wait for Haze and i can get Graw this month on my Bday when im picking up Lair and Ninja Gaide sigma at the same time. Oh and teh pets series is a blatant ripoff of nintendogs.

I think the Xbox 360 will continue to get the exclusives, like Splinter Cell: Conviction, because it really dioesn't have anything to do with sales numbers, but performance. After Splinter Cell: Double Agents looked so poorly on the Playstation 3 with the poor framerates and lack of polygon detail, Ubisoft actually said that Splinter Cell: Conviction could not be done on the Playstation 3 with the same level of quality it is on the PC and Xbox 360. So, I think the fact that the PC and Xbox 360 have the largest installed base of users, and offer the highest level of performance, I think Ubisoft will keep things as they are with the Xbox 360 and PC as their primary platform, with the Wii #2, and the PS3 in last place. ALL the third-party companies are realizing they missed out on their chance to make money on the Wii, and they are supporting it a lot more now. I'm looking forward to Assassins Creed on the Xbox 360.

HK-47-M4 5 pts

It's kind of funny that the PS3 made them more money than the Wii since they seem in love with the Wii. I guess Yves won't be bashing Sony anymore! Ubisoft is ok, I use to hold them in high regard, then Red Steel led 5 other games to change my opinion. Let's hope Assassin's Creed can bring it back up!

KFrog 7 pts

Great news. With games like Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, Rainbow Six Vegas and Splinter Cell it's all good. Keep 'em coming, I can't hardly wait for the next Rainbow Six!

Good to see Ubisoft is making some money. They have great and talented developments teams and publishers and they have definitely earned their revenue.A larger amount of money for a larger budget for their AAA titles.Looking forward to Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell Conviction, good job Ubi and hope that Assassin's Creed doubles your revenue this holiday.

Nice to see companies making money by supporting ps3! I'm glad vegas and Oblivion is selling well on ps3, they are good games and deserve as much. Hopefully more companies will develop games for the ps3 now.

Can't say I'm surprised at the PC figures considering their console ports to the PC suck.
