Following rumors, Midway announces "strategic relationship" with French publisher to distribute road-action game on March 24 in US and March 27 in EU.
Within hours of Midway Games filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week, rumors began to fly that the Chicago-based company was shopping around its highest-profile 2009 release, The Wheelman. The buyer name most often mentioned was Ubisoft, with some forum posters even wondering if the road-based action game might be rebranded to be part of the French publisher's Driver series.
Today, Midway and Ubisoft shot down the latter speculation by officially announcing a "strategic relationship" to distribute the Wheelman. Besides handling sales and marketing duties, the French company will distribute the game in North America on its previously announced March 24 ship date. It will perform the same services in France, Germany, Austria, Ireland, and the UK on March 27, with the game arriving in South America, Australia, and New Zealand at a later date. Midway will self-market and distribute the game in other European territories.
The Wheelman will be released simultaneously on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, with a prerelease demo planned for the latter two platforms. The open-world driving adventure features the likeness and voice-acting talents of actor and avid gamer Vin Diesel, who performs similar duties in Atari's forthcoming The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.
In Wheelman, Diesel will play Milo Burik, an undercover agent who is sent to Barcelona and eventually finds himself involved in a power struggle between three gangs that run the city. As Burik, players will need to infiltrate each faction, taking jobs in the game's sandbox city to work their way to the top of the Catalan capital's underworld.

Ubisofts a top company, I dont know any Ubisoft games I hate, but theres many I love, so maybe Ubi liked what they saw and this could be a real good game
i saw a playr episode that was a special on this, it looks ok quite good the 3rd person shooting looks generic but will give more variety
''Midway will self-market and distribute the game in other European territories.'' Well, so Ubisoft gets the big bucks at the countries that really do buy games, and Midway will try to sell at small markets and at eastern european countries (where people pirate games). Great deal.
Didn't we already play this game when it was called Driver, er Driver 2: The Wheel Man is Back, I mean Driv3R, I mean the Italian Job... Seriously though, the story sounds interesting enough, but it's been done before. I hope the gameplay can rise above being just a generic Driver/GTA clone starring Vin Diesel.
@ shani_boy101 this game has been in development far longer than the movie and it's from the only studio to actually release a movie based AAA title plus, Vin Diesel is badass and because he loves video games he won't let this game be crap
@conformist - yes they do.... Off hand, I can only think of the UK, Australia and Japan that drive on the left hand side, though I'm sure there must be a couple more... most of the world is on the right hand side though.... On topic - I think this could be a decent game. I for one enjoy sandbox games.... lets hope this isn't another Driver 3 though(!)
why do so many people care about this game? isn't it just a movie game or something with poor GTA-wannabe driving controls?
Ubisoft got their entire financial situation on the table with this card. They better get it right =)
@Lazyimperial Dark Athena has the Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay in it so you don't have to get the early release of it.
Dark Athena isn't out yet bleedingsouls, but its predecessor Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay came out about four or so years ago for the Xbox and PC. Pretty darn good game too, and it surprised a lot of people with its high quality. You should look it up sometime.
Sounds like GTA/Driver again? :S I like Vin Diesel and all but i think I'll stick to GTA and Driver k thx Never played Chronicles of Riddick Assault on Dark Athena...what platform is that on because I've been hearing its a good game.
ubisoft IS releasing it, and here i thought they would take 3-4 months to polish, test and fix the game before it's released, but hey...
It is cool that Ubisoft is now taking over, but I still think it is going to be a lame video game. There is nothing wrong with Wheelman, it is just not my type of game. Who knows, maybe Ubisoft will surprise me, I doubt it though.
i hope they still focus on the new driver game. if its even being made. TBH this game looks like trash
