Ubisoft casts spell on LostMagic DS

French publisher will publish Taito's role-playing game for North America, Europe. Players "draw" spells to cast them.

Ubisoft today announced that it will be publishing LostMagic for the Nintendo DS in North America and Europe sometime in the second quarter of 2006. The game was developed by Taito and art director Yoshiharu Sato and has already enchanted Japan. Ubisoft has not yet released rating or pricing information for LostMagic.

The game is an action-based role-playing game with a twist. In LostMagic, gamers wield the handheld's stylus like a wand, using the touch-sensitive screen to "draw" spells. By etching out certain patterns, players will cast different in-game spells. Spells can be combined to create 350 magic combinations.

Players control Isaac, a young wizard set with the daunting task of protecting the world against an evil force. Using seven magic wands, not only will Isaac battle monsters, but he'll also be able to charm and command them and make use of their unique abilities. The game will also feature a Wi-Fi multiplayer mode that sees players challenge each other to spellcasting duels.

This sounds like an interesting game. The WiFi feature sounds pretty cool too.

I invite everyone to read the book Sabriel by Garth Nix it is a good book with the same concept as the game and i hope they give him his royalties for coming up with the idea first

Finally, we need more RPGs for DS.

Looks like watching those Harry Potter movies will finally pay off!! Nice idea, but I hope they take a good look at Eternal Darkness and keep to a similar "logic" of how combinations form, to ease gameplay. Lordy, hexing out those Castlevania seals was confusing enough at times! :D

Interesting. Well more cool DS games is always good news. Especially for a proud DS owner like me..

Square-Enix has a deal with Ubisoft for it to publish some their games. Take Drakengard II for example.

Sounds like a step in the right direction. I would like to try it.

i figure you will pikc your fav spells or the ones that are easy for you to draw. because i wont remember 350 different spells... i have lost too many brain cells over the years.

Sounds cool! Hopefully it isn't just like an extended tech demo! :)

Even if Square-Enix owns Taito that doesn't mean that they will necessarily carry the burden of any western distribution. This happens a lot -- where the parent company farms out the "worldwide" distribution to someone else while continuing to distribute the product in the home region.

350 combinations? sounds like too many....... nice innovation though.

I think something like this might work with the Revolution controller as well. It'd be awesome and will really make you feel as a real magician

Nice!!! Another game to add to my watchlist.

This reminds me. There's also some game that is (or was and removed during production because it was too ambitious) doing something similar on PC where you TALK your spells and whatnot. Kirby Canvas Curse already spoiled this type of thing for us, I think. =) Still a way underused interface style though.

I have high hopes, but Ubisoft has a bad rep for DS games.

wi-fi is limited to one-on-one duels :( no co-op or mmorpg... pretty good game, hard to play as an import though

yay another wifi enabled game. seems neat also. maybe a good jrpg that isnt fromt he tales series.

Sounds like a good concept. Castlevania DS used a similar concept for spells, but it was more of a gimmick than anything.

Here's hoping the game is actually worth playing! I'm looking forward to it.

I've checked the Japanese site for the game and it looks really cool. I think that this year we are going to see some great RPGs for the Nintendo DS.
