True Crime: Hong Kong revived as Sleeping Dogs

Square Enix bringing United Front's renamed open-world action game to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC during the second half of the year.

True Crime: Hong Kong has been revived as Sleeping Dogs. Square Enix today announced that the new open-world action game from United Front Games is due for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PCs in the second half of this year.

The developer had been working on True Crime: Hong Kong for more than two years before Activision decided to cancel the game in a 2011 shake-up that also saw the Guitar Hero business unit disbanded.

Then in August, Square Enix picked up the rights to the game, with its London outfit managing development from then on.

As part of the deal, Square Enix picked up True Crime: Hong Kong, but not the franchise, and needed to rebrand the game before its release.

Sleeping Dogs is an open-world "cop drama" set in Hong Kong. The game puts players in the boots of Wai Shen, an undercover police officer fighting through the seedy criminal underworld of the sprawling city.

According to Square Enix, Sleeping Dogs will focus heavily on giving players a series of combat options. These include gunplay--which takes place in streets, harbors, and skyscrapers--as well as an "intuitive and imaginative" hand-to-hand combat system that lets players use martial arts to bring down their enemies.

had no idea this game even got cancelled and then rebooted as sleeping dogs (kind of a weird name if you ask me). but if its good, i might let this dog have its day

I always thought true crime:streets of LA was a good game so I'm happy to hear this news.

Awesome, i think Activision made a mistake letting this game go, it has big potential...though im glad they did, its in better hands now.

lil_jon86 5 pts

Me thinks they could have come up with a better name

dxBIGBOSSxb 13 pts

@FallenOneX It was one of the few GTA clones worth playing at the time, with other clones like Jak2(Amazing), Saints Row(Amazing), SpiderMan2(really good), The Godfather(Pretty decent), and Scarface: The world is yours(Very entertaining and good).

dxBIGBOSSxb 13 pts

@Eric_Drav3n You were giving them money to begin with?

killip 24 pts

Want it to be good, but it'll probably end up being crap...

NoDzombie 12 pts

glad this game is back, now lets just hope its good

warhawk-geeby 57 pts

That video is actually hands down one of the best videos I've ever seen on this website :| I know it's not gameplay.. but Square Enix has DEFINITELY got me interested!

Eric_Drav3n 19 pts

Good, now I don't have to give Activision my money

hammertime1080 5 pts

@FallenOneX It did have another game: True Crime: New York City which completely killed the chance for it to be a successful series.

SolidSnakeUS42 18 pts

I just hope it's at least decent. The other games weren't bad, and hope this one isn't either.

FallenOneX 30 pts

True Crime was a decent GTA clone that should have had another game.

parrot_of_adun 60 pts

Too bad Luxoflux (guys who created the True Crime series) didn't make it. It doesn't really sit well with me that guys only ever made ModNation Racers before this... Oh well, here's hoping.

Ivory-Dynamite 8 pts

I am so glad that they revived this game will buy for sure no matter what.

I'm rooting for Square on this one!

@Dawg9000 Well they are defiantly gaining one sale from me, because it is no longer produced by Activision. Plus, I don't think True Crime was ever a widely known series to begin with so it shouldn't hurt them that much.

ManzX 6 pts

when this game become a blast, wait for Activision claim its right again. sighh

incubus25 6 pts

It'd be sick if the game was like a revamped Rise to Honor from PS2. Remember that game? It starred Jet Li in it, it was awesome.

Dawg9000 5 pts

God, the amount of lost sales just because of the name change.

Xiosis 10 pts

I'll have to remember the name chage, I've always liked True Cirme.

PlatinumPaladin 66 pts

Is it wrong that I would've instantly disregarded this game if it were still coming from Activision, but am looking forward to it coming from Square?

somebody336 5 pts

Looking forward to playing this game :D

pokecharm 66 pts

always glad to hear a game gets resurrected :)

Jedilink109 17 pts

Well I'm excited to see what is going to happen with this game. I thought it looked really good and Activision was totally lame to completely cancel it.

FlamingFury 16 pts

Didn't I see like a billion trailers for this on gamespot like two years ago?

XBLACKXVIPERX 6 pts

the live action trailer looks extremely promising ...enuff to call it the GTA killer but like many things......its just a taste and no actual footage of the graphics and look and gameplay have been shown so i pray that its as good as this trailer in terms of style cause this is like a jet li version of GTA to say the least but if the game looks better when its actually shown then this will not be just a jet li version of GTA this would pretty much will be the game that heavily and might KILL GTA as the top open world crime type game dethroning the mighty gta my fingers r crossed

videogamer008 5 pts

i have lots, lots, lots, and lots of respect for Mr. Wai Shen.... he kicks a%% and doesnt ask no names.... my kind of guy..... the trailer had me drowling to the very end and i cant help by saying this but when this game and movie comes out, i am going to be the first one to get both.... Mr. Wai Shen, you really seriously do have my respects

PS2fweak 10 pts

Awesome trailer. I really hope this game ends up being good. I can't wait to see more.

Nice to see this game getting revived, I did have some excitement for it as I've played the previous True Crime games. Kind of disappointed to see this won't actually be a True Crime game though. Hopefully it was still be similar and offer some decent open world gameplay. Still planning on giving this game a chance.

Metamania 9 pts

OK, this game looks awesome. I'll be checking it out later this year!

I like the name since they change the name. Would like thx SqaueEnix for picking the creator up. If this sales thats mean Activevision going to bang there head on a brick wall lol. Im going to pick this up full price and gta5 as well. SqaureEnix Wont fell on this game i belive they can make it better .

omghaxor45 11 pts

i also hope they make it more of a cop game where your responding to calls and other things police do cause they do need a police officer game.

Icehearted 8 pts

@moviequest14 Agreed on your NYC points. That game had so much going for it, but it had some big game breaking bugs. Definitely a deeper experience than what GTA offered at the time. I won't get my expectations too high, but this is a big change for another franchise in the realm of GTA and Saints Row to stand apart from the pack and really make a name for itself. Guess I'm saying it's bloody exciting news, even if taken with a grain of salt.

ZenesisX 9 pts

I am happy someone saw potential in this game. It seems Activision was unable to see it if they were so quick to cancel it.

moviequest14 38 pts

@fremis : Obviously you haven't played either True Crime or GTA.

ChameleonX 7 pts

That's great news! Not too fond of the name though...just waiting for the inevitable Asian stereotype jokes to come in.

moviequest14 38 pts

@Ladiesman17 : Almost every open-world game has a replica (or near copy) of New York or Los Angeles and keep it at that.Since True Crime is based in actual cities it would be nice to see even more variety..why stop at Hong Kong? Maybe Atlanta,Chicago,Boston,Paris,London? Maybe even go unconventional and try out a true crime in an area that isn't necessarily urban? What could be more fun than losing the cops or chasing a criminal down when you have forests, backroads, and farms to hide on?

moviequest14 38 pts

To me the original series always had a step above GTA as not only can you go around on a shooting spree to get the cops on your tail...but go into cop chases of your own, which was great after roaming around got tiring. True Crime NYC is incredibly underrated though...when compared to GTA,Saints Row,etc. it might not be on the top but it did what should be done..made a LOT of changes to improve on top of the original. Not only was the city changed but a TON of interior buildings were added, more complex crimes, extremely superior car models, more weapons, etc.

emperiox 61 pts

YES! THANK YOU SQUARE ENIX!!! :D

scatterbrain007 11 pts

This is good news! I've seen the gameplay as well (the old ones) and it looks fantastic. I like the title too because I never really was a fan of any of the True Crime games.

Sepewrath 34 pts

@SecularSage This game was in development for a couple of years before it got canned, coming out this year, gives it an extra year of development time. I don't think they will lacking for time to polish the game, they would of had to be WAY behind on development to take over three years and still not be done.

Sepewrath 34 pts

@OrNiGhTZ Obviously that's not possible since Activision owns the franchise name. I hope this game is a huge success and sticks it to Kotick for dumping it.

UnaSolida 6 pts

I saw sum gameplay awhile back and this game looks sick, also I really hope it has a GTA style free roam.
