Tron Evolution derezzing Q4 2010, trailer debuts
[UPDATE] Turok dev Propaganda crafting apparent game prequel to Disney's film sequel to groundbreaking 1982 sci-fi movie, due out next December; full trailer inside.
[UPDATE] The trailer is now available. Original story is below.
In September, the director and producer of the forthcoming film Tron: Legacy, Steven Lisberger, let something slip. "I don't know whether I'm supposed to say it, but I'm saying it," the filmmaker told film site Latino Review. "There is definitely [a video game.] How could there not be?"
Tonight, a trailer at the VGAs confirmed Lisberger's comments. The clip, viewable above, reveals both the game's title, Tron Evolution, and its launch date of holiday 2010. Tron: Legacy debuts in theaters on December 17, 2010, in 3D and 2D.
Judging by the trailer, Tron Evolution will be a prequel to Tron: Legacy, which is being developed by publisher Disney Interactive Studios' Propaganda Games (Turok). It begins with one of the franchise's anthropomorphic programs delivering a speech in a Lance Henriksen-like rasp. It appears to indicate that the film's computer world came under attack from computer viruses--of which he is one.
Then, a quick montage shows the series' trademark light cycles and disc weapons, as well as several melee arena bouts. Title cards promptly flash the words "Before the legacy starts…the battle begins," indicating that Tron Evolution's events likely occur before Tron: Legacy's.
Released in 1982, the original Tron film was considered groundbreaking for its extensive use of computer graphics. It also has a place in many-a-gamer's heart, since it portrayed a software engineer who is transported inside a computer, where humanoid programs fight in gladiatorial contests humans see as video games. Tron: Legacy will see the son of that engineer also enter the computer realm--where his father has been trapped for the last 28 years.
While Tron Legacy will be just the second feature film in the series, Tron has spawned several games over the years. The original movie was adapted by a pair of arcade titles, Tron and Discs of Tron, and a handful of games on the Atari 2600 and Intellivision. In 2003, Disney's Buena Vista Interactive label brought the franchise back with Tron 2.0 on the PC, followed the next year by Tron 2.0 Killer App for the Xbox and Game Boy Advance. Tron and Discs of Tron were also rereleased on the Xbox 360.
It could go right.... the universe of Tron is really big... only the game developers use some criativity... the games doesnt always need to bem link to the movie directly!!! It can tell a complimentary story, that interchanges with the plot of the Tronverse... If anyone played Tron 2.0, they know what i mean.... But i´m truelly hopeful for this game, for its effects... hope to get a great storyline with it... If they made it near Fallout grandeur and without repeating gameplay and missions would be awesome!!!! Okay done whyning
The only good movie game i have ever played is Riddick Butcher Bay
This game looks as if it might get repetitive realllly fast. Total movie spin off by the lack of solid awesome moments.
I still have Tron 2.0 and it was fun but is out dated and like a lot of the older games is just not up to the standards of what we get nowadays. I would much rather play FarCry2 or Oblivion
they could make this game look really good, with thise simple colors
Ugh, another video game timed to release with a movie. Sure, it might not be awful, but you all know the chance of that are slim at best. I think you're better off hunting down Tron 2.0, which was a fine shooter. (Errr, if you can. I'm not seeing it anywhere.)
WoW , I Love TRON
Looks great. Hopefully the script will be as good as the graphics.
The original 80s Tron video game (arcade) was great and still enjoyable to play even now for some of us oldies. The 80s film was good too.
yep, back then computers were all blue and black. it was so futuristic, the tech was just mindblowing. who'd have thought we would eventually find green and black? certainly not me
Hey let us all chill because 2010 isn't here yet nor is the game.Yes it may suck and this wouldn't be the first game to suck but then again strange things can happen and it will be awesome.
The concept of Tron alone is so horribly dated it makes me want to laugh in my best Professor Frink voice. Throw in the Turok developer, and the fact that it's a movie based game and you just know this is going to be a stinker.
@thodgson... i think they probably will mate
Please don't be another crappy videogame-based-a-movie. please please please. No more Ironmans or Avatars. Be an awesome stand alone good quality game. Please don't disappoint me.
I wonder if they will use CGI to make some of the movie.
this movie/game is gonna be like a koala bear crap a rainbow in your brain
Looks fancy.
@ Bashers79 "to much CGI" hahahaha it makes you wonder how somepeople actually manage to turn their computers on or even remember to breath
@Dizzzyness please tell me your not serious, like the article says the FILM Tron came out in 82 and then the games were produced, please read the whole article first before commenting. . . I read some ones comment on a film forum site the other day and could believe what i was reading, he was moaning that they'll probably ruin the film by having to much CGI in it, my god theres some stupid people in this world
Should be good!
Tron 2.0 was excellent; I still play through that game every now and then as Buena Vista interactive really took the Quake 3 engine and made it "feel" like the tron universe. From the glowy effect down to the way the discs worked felt authentic and was a lot of fun. I'm not too hopeful for this, however. Based on a movie = bad time, and the recent Turok game was a poor showing from what I played, especially compared to previous Turok titles (I'm looking at you Seeds of Evil). I'll have my eye on this, but it will be partially covered and I'll be ready to cringe.
guys who made the new turok = probable fail and isnt the movie like the prequel already i mean any event that takes place within the tron system is impossible since it all happened in the movie
While I barely remember seeing the movie years ago, On foot gameplay could be quite enjoyable as long as it's implemented properly. The disc weapons always intrigued me. Still, Quality on foot gameplay that's appropriately & properly implemented shouldn't take away from the bike gameplay. I hope the game is quality fun & plays as good as this teaser movie looks ...
ugh....this disappointing game again.
could it also be an extension of tron 2.0?
game meh, however tron 2.0 was good, but ya, since there is a deadline probably gonna fail. However if they use daft punk in the game as well, I might pick it up for kicks
this is soooo....meh
Since there is a deadline, chances are it won't be good.

sorta a wierd game to make a movie about i mean really
Another movie tie in = Bad game.
I have to see that movie when it comes out.
awesome tron rules
I like how he makes it sound like some big revelation that there is a game tied to this lol.
The movie looks great but this trailer for the game isn't very promising.
Wow. Another licensed game based on a movie that isn't even out yet. I have to say, though, Tron was one of the few movies that just seemed made for CGI. I mean, a movie that takes place in a computer game world? Perfect. That video could almost pass itself off as a cut scene in a game. (it probably will be, for all we know) Normally I'd dismiss these kinds of games as being a simple cash-in, but with Tron, who knows? It could work. Again.
Looks pretty awesome! I watched Tron when I was really young so this fresh one might bring back some memories.
The game "Tron 2.0" was really brilliant. But I'm afraid this one will suffer the fate of all movie-based games.
Ill definitely see the movie. Ill pass on the game
wow that looks awsome should be pretty intense
trailer is EPIC!!! love the setting.
Little torn on this one. Maybe....
So this is a prequel to a sequel...ow, my head hurts now. One inportant question, though--how does this relate to the events of Tron 2.0 where, among other things, the 'translation' tech to put a human into the System is a bit more widely accessible? And for that matter, are we going to see Son-Of-Flynn meeting Son-Of-Alan (aka Jet Bradley)? And for that matter, will the title character even be involved at all, given part of the Tron 2.0 plot involved the fact that he's been 'archived' already?
Wished they showed some game play in the trailer instead of all CGI cut scenes. I'll have to wait and see on this one.
Tron, I am sorry to say, will always be the "little world that could" in my book. There is SOOOO much potential that will never be taped into in that franchise that it almost sickens me. The original move {for me at least) had one thing that a lot of movies miss, REALISM. It just felt like it really happened, it was extremely well written, cast, and just did most everything right. Tron 2.0, the spiritual successor, was just a great game. It didn't do anything wrong, it just didn't excel at anything anything so people just kind of let it slip under the radar. The point I am trying to make is this, Tron is one of Tron is one of those movies I watched a million times as a kid and can still enjoy it today. The fact that it came out so long ago and we can have this conversation about the sequel and its games should be a testament to how rich in un-taped potential this franchise is.
People liked TRON because it was ahead of its time, now its kinda with-it and nobody will want to see it. Video games were barley a thing when TRON came out, and everyone loved it to death! Now its all been done, and nobody is gonna want to see this movie, let alone play it. I woulda been happier if it was only bikes too, the on foot gameplay is gonna stink.
The graphics and music look and sound promising, maybe the gameplay will be too.
From the developer who brought us Turok, the worst game I've ever played on a current gen console? Yeah, thanks but no thanks :)
New movie looks good but i wont buy anything from the dev that made turok that game was just very very badly done.
