Tron 2.0 goes gold

Monolith's first-person action game that jumps into the computer world of the 1982 movie Tron is complete and ready to ship next month.

Buena Vista Interactive, Disney's game label, has announced that Tron 2.0 has gone gold and is on schedule to arrive on store shelves on August 26. The news is also timed to commemorate the 21st anniversary of 1982 theatrical release of Tron, which was the first feature-length movie to extensively use computer-generated graphics. It took a three-year effort to bring Tron back as a PC game, and the game uses specially designed shader effects to mimic the glowing edges of digital objects in the Tron world.

"It's hard to believe how far the world of Tron has come in two decades," said Steven Lisberger, the director and screenplay writer of Tron. "Seeing the next chapter in the franchise come to life through vast interactive environments on the computer is amazing."

Tron 2.0 takes place 20 years after the movie and has players assume the role of Jet Bradley--Alan Bradley's son--who must battle through the computer world to stop rogue programs. For more details, check out our previous coverage of the game.
