Activision and High Moon Studios' prequel story ventures to metallic planet to fight in robot civil war on 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PC next year.
In phoning in (literally) its 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference, Activision Blizzard announced new installments in a slew of franchises for 2010. While James Bond, Spider-Man, and Tony Hawk drew most of the attention at the time, the publisher also tipped its hand on a new Transformers game.
Today, Activision officially announced Transformers: War for Cybertron, saying the game will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, DS, and PC in 2010. The publisher's High Moon Studios has been tasked with development duties. The studio is best known for 2008's well-regarded Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Conspiracy, as well as the original Xbox and PlayStation 2 title Darkwatch from 2005.
Activision is billing its latest Transformers game as an origins story and sees gamers journeying to the planet Cybertron as the Autobots and Decepticons engage in a gripping civil war. As the game is set prior to the war spreading to Earth, gamers will also see the robots transforming into their original Cybertronian forms. A teaser trailer for the game below shows an Optimus Prime that leans closer to aesthetic of the original cartoon and toy line than the recent films.
War for Cybertron will feature two original story arcs. The first sees gamers picking up with the heroic Autobots, who are severely outgunned in their effort to save the planet. The second campaign indulges gamers' destructive side as the megalomaniacal Decepticons. In addition to single-player action, War for Cybertron features online co-op play, as well as head-to-head multiplayer battling.
to DCUlTrapro: This game when game tested was a 3rd person shooter mainly and slightly RPG. What I can say about the game is that it is not attached to the movies. There is a large variety in the game of pretty much everything. I am an FPS person on every console besides the Wii. I would not plat a 3rd person shooter but this game is a must and I will tell you right now that I am going to buy it. The main screen to the game is kickass itself. If there is a demo coming out for this game do what ever you can to get the demo. I will not say anything about the story line but as you can tell from the title and the pictures it does not take place on earth. To BionicB... The game testing done for this game's champaigne and Mutiplayed modes was done early last summer. That being said there should not be any delay in the games release however there are always backorders on the production of the mass number of copies of games.
Here's hoping this is the spiritual successor to Transformers:Armada instead of those crap movie tie-ins. If it captures what that game did, I'm all kinds of in!
MatzeEdend, its not a movie tie-in so that might mean that they'll take their time with thhis one ; )
Does anyone know what kind of game this is going to be? I mean is it 3rd person shooter like normal transformers game or will it be stratergy? Squad based.... military etc, any ideas?
Concept sounds good, but its activsion. They always seem to "ACT on a "VISION" without much thought.
Dood, if this were an MMO-game, the possibilities would be endless!!! :) I'm very much looking forward to this game. Cripes... the whats been shown so far has a look inspired by both the G1 series and the new Transformers Animated series, both of which totally rule. Now, if someone would just crank out a serious Robotech game!
it certainly looks better than the movie, which in my opinion sucks to the max!!! at least i can see the robots fighting without any overly shaky scenes and I could see their whole bodies, not just their arms or legs...
I just showed the trailer to my sister, who is a big Transformers fan. It was so cool that she shivered and the only words she could mutter were "Ooo, cool!" We can only hope it doesnt stink as badly as other movie tie-in games... but even if it does I imagine my sis will want to get it anyway XD
Im sorry I should have said it differently. Oh wow its Activision looking to make yet another cheap cash in. If it was any other publisher than I would have some hope for it.
@mrzero1982pt2 Personally I find it hard to believe that any transformer would really have no transformation for teh purpose of transportation, the point of them is typically to have a humanoid design and another design, usually for transportation... some have multiple transformations like a humanoid one, a vehicle and some kind of weapon or tool. Like you said, it all depends on the artist and i get the feeling that they are all meant to have a vehicle transformation but in some cases the characters may not have been shown in that specific transformation just because they werent focused on heavily. so technicaly some werent vehicles but I get the feeling its only because of the specific role they played in the show, not because they didnt have them but because it was never shown or designed. I mean why draw up a transformation for a character that is only in an issue or episode briefly in humanoid or weapon form... I think we're both kind of right... i dont even know. lets find a totaly transformers freak and ask him.
@mrzero1982pt2 I see what youre saying and I concede to the idea that those mentioned may not have been vehicles. Transformers actually has a pretty deep storyline and lots happened in the comics that im not aware of since I did not read all of them, not even close. My point was that they were not all vehicles, you said they werre but now youre saying that they were not so im not sure whats going on. You are saying now that a few were other objects which is exactly the point i was trying to make. you said yourself to a guy "dont be daft man, if you read any of the comics, or saw any of the animated series, transformers always turned into automobiles" sooo whats up with that? I dont get it.
Wow was that Omega Supreme at around 34 seconds in? Looks sweet, hopefully it won't suck like most of the previous Transformers games released. Just once though I'd like to see the Generation 1 as they were back in the 80's made into a game. Ah, nostalgia...
@ alibabba13: This game looks to be based on the original Animated series more so than the movies. Have you even watched it? It would be like bashing the announcement of Batman Arkham Asylum and saying it was a movie tie in to The Dark Knight even though it was based on the comic...
@Tig theyve never looked exactly like they look in this. its a new look on the War Within series. and I love the movies and this games designs
@twistarhymes48 If you read my comment properly you would see i said ORIGINAL ANIMATED SERIES not comics!! Yes the comic and the animation started off with war on cybertron etc, but at what point back then did Op Prime, Megatron etc look like they do in these new movies and games??
*crosses fingers* please let this be a good transformers game! please let this be a good transformers game! please let this be a good transformers game!
remember the PS2 transformers game that was a japan only release? that looked awesome since it copied the look of the american cartoon series and the trailer had that scene from the original movie where optimus blasts into the air and shoots down all the decepticons. why cant they just release THAT game on the 360.
Trailer looks cool hope they wont put suckish motion controls though game oes look good though I'll hae to see if the story mode is long or not
kinda excited bokut this one loved the cartoon when i was a kid and since this ones not based on the movies maybe its gotta chance i sure hope so anyway
@ashtray1986 how could you have not known activision was behind this? they bought the rights of the games from atari a few years ago, sat on the franchise until the films and that was it. if you all remember, activision buying the rights to publish transformers was the primary reason people thought a transformers movie was not far behind. i hate they have it too, but hey, its life
@shoelaces-4-all no, on cybertron they were a myriad of things. soundwave if im not mistaken(and according to the writer and artist) was a TANK perceptor and the rest of them, i am not really sure so i am not going to go all transfan on you, but a majority of them were automobiles. a FEW were other objects
