Tony Hawk Skates Again

By Amer Ajami

Activision announces Nintendo64, Game Boy Color, PlayStation, Dreamcast, and PC sequels to its award-winning original.

Activision is banking on the success of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, which swept a number of awards when it debuted for the PlayStation last year, with this morning's announcement of a sequel. Called Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, the game is currently in development for the Nintendo64, Game Boy Color, PlayStation, Dreamcast, and PC platforms. Neversoft, the developer of the original's PlayStation version, will also be developing the PSX version of the sequel. Activision didn't announce what developer would be doing the footwork on the other platform versions of Pro Skater 2, however.

"Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was a huge success for Activision, both in terms of sales figures and critical acclaim,'' stated Mitch Lasky, executive vice president of Activision Studios. "With its all-star lineup of pro skaters and superb gameplay, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater set the benchmark for the genre. With Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 we will take the skateboarding category to new heights.''

In addition to new modes of play like a two-player split-screen trick attack mode, Pro Skater 2 will feature a track editor that'll let players design, build, and tweak their own skate parks. All versions of the game are expected to ship simultaneously this fall. Activision made no mention of a PlayStation 2 version of Pro Skater 2, though.
