Just finished this game 15 minutes ago. It's a touch short which is both a sign of me wishing it was longer and it actually being kinda short. All in all a beautifully polished game and showed some things I haven't seen before. Loved the deer hunting. And looks amazing on my new AMD card.. (7970).
Latest Tomb Raider patch contains various gameplay and bug fixes, while Nvidia works on a new driver to improve performance.
The PC version of Tomb Raider has received a patch, primarily designed to alleviate some of the crashes suffered by users with Nvidia and Intel graphics hardware.
Build 1.0.718.4, which is now available on Steam, also includes fixes for crashes at startup and when selecting Options from the game's menu. Various graphics glitches are also reported to have been fixed, alongside a bug that meant some users couldn't use the exclusive fullscreen mode.
Among other fixes, there have been a few improvements to TressFX hair-rendering options, and a gameplay fix for players unable to progress with regard to the boat in the beach area.
The patch will automatically apply itself the next time users load Steam.
Various Tomb Raider players on PC have been reporting problems with attempting to play the game on the highest settings with an Nvidia card. Nvidia has now said it is working on a driver update to improve performance with the game.
"Unfortunately, Nvidia didn't receive final game code until this past weekend which substantially decreased stability, image quality and performance over a build we were previously provided," said Nvidia's Andrew Burnes last week.

Except that it still has problems with the tessellation and TressFX on Nvidia hardware. The "fix" to TressFX was mostly cosmetic and did not fix any performance issues whatsoever.
It's sad when pc gamers pay the extra for stunning visual gameplay experience and get screwed over by incompetent developers.
Rubbish! The intrinsically adaptable nature of a PC (modular componentry that enables multifarious combinations) merely means it is a challenge to develop code - and the competency, skill and talent of industry programmers (not to mention consumers and users) have been undermined by the static nature of gaming consoles.
@MatrixGamer78 while it's true that computers act so differently from one another, developers should really test their games with various computer parts before hurrying to release a game. It is the main reason why consoles will always rule the market.
Hmm...zero crashes so far with everything at max but post-processing turned off. About 2 and a half hours so far. Geforce 560 Ti 448. Guess I'm a lucky one.
@cdragon_88 People are too quick to blame developers. I have everything maxed and turned on with no crashes or bugs on my Nvidia either.
@poypoy72 @cdragon_88 who wrote the code for the game.? me?nvidia? of course the developer is to blame, just because you didnt get a crash doesnt mean thousands of others who complain are on fault... they optimized the game exclusively to ati gpu and drives, not nvidia. so it s their f ing fault for selling a product without warning that it may crash constantly on nvidia...
@poypoy72 'buddy' i dont have any problems so far after started using the hitman absolute profile, on ultimate setting everything on, but denying that there is a problem is just ignorant, and if there is this similar problem everyone is experiencing, who is to blame? jesus?
@Qrox Same thing happens for me with Ghost Recon Future Soldier... Even after all the patches.
@Qrox That's most likely your console..
Look, I enjoy gaming on a pc, but it almost seems like your better off just grabbing the console version sometimes. Yeah console games have glitches , crash, and need updates to fix, but not near as much as early pc releases. My copy of Dishonored still crashes at the first level, when I enter the prison. I tried updated my graphics drivers, going to a earlier version of catalyst, clearing my game cache in steam, uninstalling and reinstalling, but nothing worked. I just gave up . Now I may try to resolve it later, but it seems like sometimes you may be better off with the console counterpart.
@godzillavskong sorry dont like playing at 1280x720p. Looks dramatically less crisp than 1920x1080. Almost every console game runs at 720p as a way for the developer to push their visual details a bit further and the games crispness suffers, not to mention the jaggies and lack of anisotrophic filtering. blech
@godzillavskongyou have a good point, I am having the same problem here, the thing is that the developers didn't give us a proper version of the game because the PC version is a second priority to them, and that's why we fined more bugs and glitch on a PC game more then on a console one. the same thing happened on GT4 and many other games, so I think we have to blame them, not the PC
@samidiab @godzillavskong Day 1 perfect play through of the game on my rig with everything turned on and maxed with my Nvidia card. I keep everything up to date and optimized through various software products and my extensive knowledge of hardware. PC is a luxury, but you can only learn to appreciate that luxury if you know how to handle and manage it.
@godzillavskong Learn how to optimize and manage your computer and you'll be fine. PC is still many times better than console.
I am a game developer and I do not understand why a game needs to be dependent on nVidia making new drivers for it. The developers did not test the game with current generation of drivers? It crashes all the time for me, unless I turn off TressFX and vertical sync.
@Blue_Tomato Nvidia got an early build and everything worked fine, but they didn't get a final build until it was hitting shelves and they realized that what they thought was okay before now doesn't work. They weren't working with Nvidia through the process like they did with AMD and the game suffered for it.
@Toysoldier34 i love how completely inaccurate that last statement is. Neither graphics card developer just throws "pure power" at a game to get results. Not in the least. The cards both function quite intricately. Even Nvidias 8800ultra which literally was just a massive monster that chugged ahead of its competitors at the time by pure power had the same level of underlying finesse in its architecture during its reign. Easy way to see that both ATI and Nvidia have complex cards is to look at how big their driver suites are, 100s of MB in size ... of code. Nough said.
Most games are made with Nvidia first because their cards use different methods to achieve the results while AMD cards just throw pure power at it so they are much simpler to get the same results from.
@Blue_Tomato @Toysoldier34 i always assumed they scratched each other's back somehow. NVIDIA clearly has game developers to thank for some of their sales("Plays best on blah blah blah"). Crystal Dynamics would probably love that their game wasn't riddled with compatibility issues, making people reluctant to buy it at all
The game still crashes for me when I activate Tessellation. I guess I'll have to wait and hope Nvidia fixes it with there driver update.
@gruoch1 I just turned it off to get better performance. What sucks is this is one of the games where you actually notice when tessellation is off. far less subtle than most games it actually affects depth of certain shadows/ambient occlussion instead of just curves. but still, not exactly an "I better go buy a new video card" leap in visual quality
Game has been working great for me, even on an SLI setup.
Oh well, a patch is usually a good thing, so I am fine with it.
Then again, I have been using the newest Nvidia Beta drivers, which may help a bit.
Patch the QTEs...PLEASE...they're unplayable on the PC...I must've died at least 10+ times from the stupid wolf and it made me stop playing this game lol.
@whackyq Use a controller. The game and UI were designed with a controller in mind. Sure, you gain better aiming with a mouse but you hinder the rest of the game i.e QTEs and platforming with a KB/M setup. I started playing with KB/M first but switched to the 360 controller after failing the first QTE multiple times.
@whackyq You just need to get used to the "Assassins creed 2" like control mapping where it tells you the icon of a boot and what ever you have that assigned to you press.
@whackyq just look at the button config, it happened to me also.
currently the amd hd 7 series is the best for gaming thanks to the amd gcn architecture and good and fast driver support
