Publisher confirms overhaul to annualized pro wrestling simulation emphasizes animation and gameplay; rebranded WWE '12.
THQ has been fairly clear that changes are afoot with its decade-old wrestling simulation WWE SmackDown vs. RAW franchise, telling GameSpot last month to expect details at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. With that show kicking off next week, THQ today drew back the curtain on its plans, the least of which is a rebranding of the franchise's long-winded moniker.
THQ will be releasing this year's installment in the pro wrestling sim under the name WWE '12. In an interview posted to the game's website, Yuke's creative director Cory Ledesma said that the name change is indicative of a greater reboot for its WWE franchise, one that involves incorporating new technology and refining gameplay.
"WWE '12 is far from just a name change," he said. "Our goal has been to create a brand new experience with a new, high quality animation system, a new renderer and a new strategic gameplay experience that will look, feel and play substantially better than its predecessors. When you play the game, you'll notice right away that you're spending less time on the mat mashing buttons and more time enjoying the action with a faster paced gameplay flow, simpler game controls and the most fluid and realistic animations the game has ever seen."
"This is a true franchise reboot and not just a name change," he continued. "It's also an investment toward the future of the franchise, giving us the opportunity to use our new technology to push the game to new heights never seen before."
Ledesma indicated that this updated tech includes new animation that enables added gameplay possibilities, such as interrupting wrestlers' special moves. However, the creative director emphasized that the studio isn't starting from scratch.
"I've just felt for a couple of years now that the franchise has been getting stale and in need of a reboot. Not just with the name but also with the game experience," he said. "The technology group at Yuke's Yokhama has been secretly working on the technology and its implementation while we've been working on the game the last two years. We are now at the point where we can integrate it into the game."
"Now, we aren't changing the game entirely or completely ripping everything out to start over," he continued. "That wasn't the goal. What we are doing is taking the basic essence of what is good in the past games and making a new experience that feels fresh, fun, responsive, faster, smoother and is of higher quality."
THQ expects to have WWE '12 on hand at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. GameSpot will have more information on the game as soon as it's available.
@edub272 you are an idiot :D they are already in the game ever since HCTP lol , except kurt angel for now , hhh , taker , austin and rock. are all in the game
These games might not be great but are definitely a relief in my busy gaming schedule , So as every year I'm gonna give it a shot and won't love it but will surely have fun in chunks
It seems like everything has been done in wrestling games in the 90's and then THQ comes out with SVR and stripes it down to it's jelly bone and starts to add features that was in wrestling games a decade ago to the newer SVR's and call it new is just blasphemy pure and simple. WWE 12 (Inch) is just SVR without SVR on the title. Same game different paint job. I really hope EA come out with a TNA game :) cause the THQ games sucked ever since Just Bring It minus Here comes the pain. I am not buying this game anyway...good or bad! THQ just need to STFU! and the WWE games and let a new monster take over! I think we can all agree on that one or agree to disagree. Also if Orton is on the cover I hope that isn't a sign of how fun the game is, lol
Said FIFA to FIFA fans a few years ago, the reboot look an awful lot like the previous games, WWE needs to give their license to a better company.
You know, seeing as everyone wants a reinvented No Mercy/WCWvsNWO Revenge style game and as WWE owns almost everything now anyway, why can't we just have a WWEvsWCWvsNWOvsECW Revenge or something crazy like that? Make it an XBLA title; improve graphics slightly, give us some options to increase the speed (played No Mercy a few years back on my old N64 and it felt really slow) and most people would be happy. If not just give me an improved WWE All Stars. That games been more fun than the last 4 SvR games.
I have to agree with everyone. I'm sick of Yukes. They've had the WWE license long enough. It's time to move on. I would like a simulation style game like No Mercy too. Unfortuately Aki/Asmik was absorbed into EA Sports so until WWE kicks THQ to the curb and signs with EA we won't see that greatness again. The developers can tell us all they want that this is a 'reboot' and that things will be different, but it's gonna be more of the same just in a different package. Telling us it's gonna be different is just spin to sell their new franchise name of WWE 12
i stopped playing these games after "Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain".. which i liked a lot.. now i just dont know any new wrestlers so F that noise.. give me HHH, The Rock, Stone Cold, Undertaker, Kurt Angle (with the milk truck) and im golden
I don't get it. There seem to be enough people here who'd buy a new WCW Revenge/No Mercy style game. Won't someone please take our money?
would be cool to see a above par WWE game again. All Stars woulda be great if they gave it more love then what it recieved. Seriously when is THQ gonna figure out that yearly installments isn't doing anything but busting this franchise in the chops?
I agree 1000000% with leeko_link. I would love a game like No Mercy 2 or DOR3. I stopped playing WWE games when 08 came out. I would love a game where you can lay a chair on the ground, suplex someone onto it, and hear AND see them slam onto it like in No Mercy. I hate how they just slide out of the way or go to a quick cut scene like in SVR 07. I want to manually hoist someone onto my shoulders, while my partner climes the ropes and delivers a dropkick/clothesline/hurricanranna/anything. I want to 3D someone without having to store a finisher. It would be awesome to do a flapjack while your partner hits the ropes and randomly comes in with a cutter. It would make for a HOLY @$#% moment if you had to actually work for it instead of having a finisher stored up.
i hope it will be like here comes the pain, that was the best wresteling game that has been made so far, especially how easy it was to go out in royal rumble and the story mode was cool to
i was never good at all the wrestling games that they had for any of the game consoles. but it was just fun to create the wrestler that you wanted to play as and to play against the other player that you were at least trying to beat and end up losing.i have been to a wrestling match and it was totally awsome especially when you are sitting in the seat that is nearest to the ring and then it's just one of the best matches ever.
Well the new info makes the game sound promising, but buying these games on release day is a gamble. Still, I'll do it because I'm a deep fan of wrestling games, and always wanting to play the newest ones. Plus off-line 4-player is always a blast with this series.
Eh I am just gonna wait on this one, every year I hope they will fix their CAW upload feature but every year its a let down, is it really that hard to allow a CAW creator to allow people to edit entrance music while locking physical editing, stat editing and ability to re-upload? The thing that hacked people off was creating a good classic wrestler CAW and have to choose over allowing people to edit them so that they can put said wrestlers theme in the entrance but in the process leaving your work to be re-uploaded by some slacker loser who then calls your work their own OR not allowing people to edit or re-upload but in the process people complain that they cant assign the wrestlers theme music. its a lose lose situation. If they fix that I might give the series another look. That and add the ability to edit an in game wrestlers attire beyond just recolors, thats what I loved about the old THQ games back in the day for the N64, you could dress the wrestlers up in dang near anything.
Crud! Now I need a 7th gen console to play newer titles! All I got is a PS2 and a PSP. :| Damn economy!
So last year Cory was all "Yeah man, best SVR game ever, this is the ultimate wrestling experience!". Now he's like "Yeah the series has been balls for the past few years."
i want some impact from the moves, whats the point of doing a DDT off the rope if it sounds like you landed on a matress?
what i would like is if the "RTW" could be sorta like it shows how popular your wrestler is & how many people are buying your merch you know stuff like that but if there alowing people to interupt "specials" then im DEF interested to see what else there gonna put in P.S. They should also input the WWE draft in there so that the game stays fresh
"When you play the game, you'll notice right away that you're spending less time on the mat mashing buttons and more time enjoying the action with a faster paced gameplay flow..." This was my favorite part of the interview!
I hope the changes in gameplay won't be TOO drastic. Truth be told, I rather liked the "one analog to move, one to grapple". Now, mind you, I hadn't seriously played a wrestling game in a good long time; not since No Mercy for the N64. So when I tried out SvR 2010 about this time last year, I was blown away. The funny thing is: I don't even watch much wrestling these days. I sort of keep up on what's going on, but rarely watch it. My primary reason for playing the games is to create my own wrestlers. I love playing with the Create-a-Wrestler stuff, creating guys like Toro or The Damage Brothers (not to be confused with the cartoon of the same name). So, as long as the CAW stuff is still great, I'm in.
It's good that they're changing the gameplay. We won't see wrestlers spawning to the midlle of the ring to perform a finisher now, and we can interrupt the moves the other players are doing. But I wish they improved graphics too. From the images displayed you can tell it's almost equal to SvR 2011. They can do much better.
I can only hope they have a backstage area like HctP, where I can leave mid match through the ramp and go all the way outside and powerbomb someone off a building.
"When you play the game, you'll notice right away that you're spending less time on the mat mashing buttons and more time enjoying the action " About time they changed this.
Not to mention the game by the least, WWE (TV Show) needs a good rebooting as well, storytelling isn't as good as it once was.
WWE Games's already weird control scheme changes year after year, that's so annoying... And yet they couldn't make anything better than SD vs. RAW 2007, or even HCTP.
