Publisher pins down mixed martial arts league rights for current-, next-generation consoles, handhelds, iPhone, iPad for most of forthcoming decade.
Hot on the heels of its announcement of a new Montreal studio, THQ this morning revealed it has locked down rights to develop and publish games based on the Ultimate Fighting Championship brand through 2018. The agreement with UFC's parent company, Zuffa LLC, is wide in scope, covering games for all current- and next-generation consoles, as well as all handhelds, the PC, the iPhone, and iPad. The deal also covers any online games.
"THQ has delivered the quality demanded by UFC and its fans with the first two Undisputed games, and we are about to broaden the UFC brand experience among gaming fans through social and mobile apps," said Dana White, UFC president. What exactly the social applications would be were not revealed.
The THQ/UFC deal comes just a few months after UFC 2010 Undisputed fell short of expectations. Though the game shipped 2.7 million units for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it still lagged behind the 3.5 million units UFC 2009 Undisputed sold through. As a result, THQ decided to expand the window between games in the series, with the next installment expected in fall 2011; UFC 2010 Undisputed launched on the Xbox 360 and PS3 this May. A motion-sensing UFC workout game, UFC Trainer, is due out in January for the Wii, PlayStation Move, and Xbox 360's Kinect.

@TongLong That's cool... I respect that you have a different opinion than mine, I don't wholly agree - but that is what is great about life as we know it, we all can be into whatever we want to for ANY reason that appeals to us. Side note: I -HUMBLY- apologize for being SO harsh, it was an early post for me while nursing a Bday hang-over...
@Arrogant_1 Cool, you have an opinion, so do I. Sadly, UFC (and its subsidiaries like WEC) have become the only show on the block. The TV show saved the promotion, and personally, I don't like the direction the combat sports scene has taken since UFC's monopolization of the sport. I'm not saying that no one should like the UFC, I'm saying that I don't like it. I'm not saying that it's full of bad fighters, I am saying that I prefer a more international cast. I guess my biggest beef with the UFC games is that they're a part of selling a "brand", another term I can't stand. I guess I like to use my imagination, think for myself, and ESCAPE when I'm playing a videogame. I'd prefer to play a combat sports game where I'm using exciting fighters from around the world than the cookie-cutter, tattooed, loud-mouth, mohawk wearing TV stars that I've never even see fight once. I choose not to give my money to the UFC because I don't like their product, and yeah, I find organizations like PRIDE, K-1, DREAM, and even Strikeforce to some extent to be far classier and that they put on a far better show with way better production values than the UFC. I don't like EA at the best of times, and yes, the EA gave is derivative, but at least I have an OPTION. And dude, read my post again, I never once said EA was innovative. ;)
@TongLong Wow is all I have to say about your obvious lack of knowledge when it comes to the MMA scene... Calling the UFC a "backwoods organization" is like calling the NFL the same... Who would you call the leader of the MMA movement? StrikeForce? IFL? Maybe Pride or WEC (both owned by Zuffa, the company that IS the UFC)? Sengoku? C'mon bro, know a smidgen of anything on a topic before you put your foot in your mouth... And as far as their "accomplished international fighters" most of EA MMA's roster is UFC wanna-be's (& I'll use baseball terms, 'cause MMA brains are apparently FAR beyond you...) or Triple A players instead of guys who could be in the Majors. The only reason EA went w/the regional rules/gameplay is they lacked a fighter roster, period... EA innovative? C'mon, do you play any of the other yearly "lather, rinse, repeat" sports titles they offer? Typically I don't get this way, but THIS retardation had to be addressed...
I'm glad they got exclusive rights cause I tried EA MMA and it sucks so they would probably screw this up too if they got it.
This announcement wasn't about THQ or even UFC. Ultimately (pun intended) it was about stealing the thunder of EA MMA coming out. Why else announce this the morning it gets released. Dirty business as usual.
@ Colonel-Snake UFC is not a sport... It's a company. They get to decide what happens with their brand name. If anyone else wants to make an MMA game, that's still totally fine. THQ doesn't have the rights to that.
We don't need sports games evry year. It's good that at least THQ won't probably release a new UFC until 2012.
Dana White has such a strong control of his industry it's insane. Say whatever you want about the man but damn, he knows how to stronghold an industry.
Sports games should be released every couple of years. Second I don't think their should be any exclusive rights for sport games. Most sport games are released with minor improvements and you're basically paying for the same exact game. Also to add I rather various companies be able to develop sport games. Honestly when you have competition it pushes developers to take their jobs more seriously when they know their competitor might make a better game then them. Anyway Ea deserves this since they been doing this for Football for years now and I will honestly say Madden is Lackluster bring back the NFL 2K franchise back >_>.
THQ isn't releasing a new ufc game next year they are going to release the next UFC game in 2012 from a report that gamespot had up about a month ago, cause the 2010 one did not do as good as 2009, but that is good that THQ locked up that contract EA should've never passed on this but all well their loss right.
Lame. Exclusivity encourages laziness, complacency, and euthanizes innovation. Too bad people will look past anything without a recognizable label or "characters" that they recognize from TV, the EA MMA game (even though it IS EA...) has a far greater diversity of accomplished international fighters and recognizes differences in rules in various regions (head stomps, North-South knees, soccer kicks to downed opponents... Man I miss PRIDE...). THQ can keep its backwoods fight promotion, and keep churning out laziness.
All im saying is there gonna whip out there lysol and polish graphics then re release just like they do with madden,ncaa,mlb,nhl,fifa,wwe.. you get it... I would recommend skipping years to enjoy the full potential.. or just play your copies of 2010 for 6 more years and buy the 7th one lol.. thq probably dont even have enough $$ (Insert bill gates here) to press the next ones on Radioshack DVD-R's lol.. i mean who in the hell still buys wwe games?? didnt that ish fade out in like 07 08? ufc is turning mma BORING! id prob end up watching wrestling again.. lol
Thats nice and all but their already starting out bad. First game was great but second didnt improve enough over the first and f course online mode still needs a lot of work. They also need to get rid of the online pass stuff.
Yeah, eight more UFC games... just what we need. These games would be considerably better if they pumped one out every two years instead of one. The developers would have more time to work out the flaws in their games, and so the final product would be a lot more polished. I think that's the main problem will all these sports titles; there's one every year. Eventually, you run out of room for improvement, and sometimes you even take a few steps backward because you rush things.
I really don't like when a company can lock the rights for such a long period, if they make a crappy game, not talking about UFC since i haven't played, but we've seen that before with other sports games. I like Fifa soccer games, but i like Pro Evo Soccer also and i was always pissed by the fact EA got all the big names and Konami got nothing. So this kind of business makes we the gamers loose.
Lmao ! I payed 800 points for the online mode and could never send invites for someone to join my camp, it freezes all the time and takes forever just getting to the menus coz of that stupid connecting message. Ive also only managed to get 1 game online. A waste of money and in MY opinion is a worse game than 2009. Lets hope it improves or I wont be buying it anymore, I will just make do with watching my beloved sport as much as I can. I really carnt get enough of it. But I carnt play a game thats more frustrating than enjoyable.
@Legend002 I agree with you a 100% on that. Just look what happened to Madden after EA got exclusive NFL rights.
woooohooo so we DO EXPECT 7 more crappy Ufc games?? Lets heat up the stove, get the popcorn and get ready for more harry potter movies too while where at it.. and watch paint dry also... sounds more fun then any sports game... here we go ufc 2011 (madden upgrade) ufc 2012 (wwe upgrade) 2013 (we are all dust) (but some how the gods will manage to give it the good old nba2k upgrade)... and so on..
im a BIG UFC fan and UFC 2010 was good but they put so much into the game that idk what else they can put into it but im gonna still get the games anyway and i do think by 2018 its not gonna be as great as it is now and as for EA Sports MMA i dont like the game at all but i might borrow it from a friend to give it another shot but im not spending $60 on when i can get Call of Duty or Fable or Fallout so EA Sports is not worth it in my opinion
I loved Undisputed 2009 and 2010 but I just got rid of 2010 for EA MMA. While I feel the roster on 2010 was better, EA's game offers a much deeper feature set and much more stable online component.
@Kraczek are u kidding MMA from Ea is awesome the graphics are amazing the controls are tight and the gameplay is solid while THQ's UFC games are hot now they won't be in a couple years they'll be just like the Smackdown series the same old thing over and over again.
I dont know what the hate is i definetly agree with Kraczek UFC 2010 is the best game until the next UFC
I don't really see how continuous depth could occur in these games year by year. Ultimate fighting doesn't really change that much. It's the same octagon and the same rules. There isn't even really any different match types, it's just all one on one. Just once I'd like to see a tag-team match, now that would be awesome.
UFC Undisputed 2010 ? ROTFL xD The best fighting game i've ever played. We meet with friends and play few hours a day, i've got more than 3000 fights played. MMA from EA sucks real bad, moves are without power, it's slow and boring. Only Bas Rutten should be in DLC or next game ;)
Has UFC seen what crap THQ has done with WWE it's the same crap every year just with a new coat of polish on it
undisputed 2010 was horrible. EA MMA is were its at. its a shame cause i was hoping EA and Dana "douche bag" white could work out a contract for a EA made UFC game in the future. but now it looks like we gotta wait till after 2018.
