Well this story is total BS! I just picked up my copy for the PS3 yesterday and was playing it until the wee hours of the morning!!
Publisher pulls the plug on Sony version of Sandblast Games' anti-homo sapiens shooter Path of the Furon; 360 edition still on for December 1.
THQ began the year with a substantial realignment of its product portfolio. After delaying much of its early 2008 lineup due to quality concerns, the publisher enacted sweeping cuts to its full-year slate. As part of those strokes, THQ closed a studio and shelved, among other titles, Savage Entertainment's Destroy All Humans: Big Willy Unleashed for Sony's PlayStation 2 and PSP.
With the year rapidly drawing to a close, THQ will be ending 2008 on much the same note. Today, THQ confirmed that development has halted on the PlayStation 3 edition of Sandblast's Destroy All Humans!: Path of the Furon. Sandblast Games was among the five internal studios THQ shuttered earlier this month.
In a statement issued to Shacknews, THQ said "development issues" were the primary reason in its decision to shelve the PS3 version.
Destroy All Humans!: Path of the Furon for the Xbox 360 is still expected to arrive on retail shelves December 1. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
DAH! POTF was one of the games on my list to get for my sister. We got the PS3 last year when we heard that the game was coming out on the PS3 and XboX systems. Developmental problems? Yeah right! Sounds like they were handed money at the last minute and or they were just too dumb
What a bunch of BS to get PS3 owners excited for a release then cancel the game less than a week from the release? I have all the DAH for the ps2 and they are great games. NOw we have a void in the series and it's just not right for PS3 owners. I'm sick of the deathbox360 and now this game is an exclusive for that POS system? It should not be released at all then. Give me a break, the Xbox is garbage and even the owners of the 360 know that, so why release a game on a system that dies within a year? THQ made a big mistake and I hope this title gets released eventually on the PS3. Tweek it or whatever you gotta do to get it out to the system that will be around longer than the Sh*tbox360. What a joke, really. Totally bummed.
HA! i knew it would come soon. this is the first step in the ps3's downfall. all you ps3 boys, dont think this is the only game to be cancelled on ps3 only. i promise you more to come.
This announcement came out way too late to say that they had "development" issues. Why not six months into production rather than a week before release?
its the same as gta4... it would have been a far better game if the develpoper didnt waste so much time trying to get it near identical to the 360's... Imagine if that extra half a year we had to wait was used implementing all the things in the older gtas....
its seems like they were just lazy considering its still out for europe but not in america however i live in the uk so yay. but even then not much of a problem because i could of got it on my 360 but then would i even buy it? that is the question.
C'mon, how long am I going to see this story go uncorrected. THQ have said that it's the north american version that is being pulled, but the PS3 version will be released in Europe at the same time as the European 360 release. This story needs to be updated. Go check it out people. And for the record - COD4 developers have gone on record to say that it was easy to develop for PS3. Many studios are moving to PS3 development and porting to 360 as it's easier for them that way. Valve are taking another look at PS3 development also after spending a year slagging off the machine (they refused/couldn't to do a PS3 port of the orange box and EA developers had to do it instead). Change is uncomfortable for developers and sony could've done a better job with this but we are where we are. Long live PS3 and xbox - I love you both :)
That sucks. I really enjoyed the first game and now I don't know if I am going to be able to play another one again. Dang you portfolios, you ruined my day again. I bet it was those pesky manila envelopes that are to blame.
Before I even post this comment, I want to say that Im not a 360 fanboy. I just wanted to see how fast my comment would get rejected by the gamespot community :) Lol anyway here we go... @PalatialRegalia Ok, enough with saying that gamespot is biased. Really, what is it going to take to get it through to you? They provide high res screenshots showing obvious differences and you still find something to complain about anyway. I do admit that PS3 CAN have better graphics than the 360, but you cant call gamespot biased because PS3 graphics havent been worked with to their full potential yet. As far as killzone 2 is concerned, it really does look subpar. The first one was EXTREMELY overhyped and wasnt better than many FPS out there. And before you say Im a fanboy Im not. I have played the PS2 and PS3 and I did play through killzone 1 and was thoroughly unimpressed with it. It might end up being a good game all the same, but it wont likely be a system seller if resistance 2 couldnt do it (and that actually looked pretty good to me). @simple malk Agreed that developers should stop whining about how hard the PS3 is to work with. If they actually try to do something with it, it could end up pretty spectacular since in theory PS3 can have better graphics than 360. But I massively disagree about the user fanbase: Did you even see hiow fast my comment got blocked before? Obviously there are plenty of PS3 fanboys out there as well as 360 fanboys. Not to mention that there were enough of them on ign.com to lower the gears 2 user average to a 7.5 since they flooded it with reviews 2-3 weeks before the games release, giving it zeros and saying that resistance 2 is better (which it definately isnt).
Fair enough, I just hate the fact so many developers are whining about how much harder PS3 is to code for when a lot of devs who have actually embraced it have made good use of it. THQ is releasing the game on Feb 2009 on PS3 in AU and EU. Even if this is a delay to development they probably started development on 360 initially but now for some reason they are just scrapping the NA PS3 version instead of just saying it'll be delayed. Something stinks of limited time exclusive in NA or something. Again I don't even want to play this game on my 360 but I don't like the fact that THQ is trying to pull the wool over our eyes. Bottom line is Sony and Microsoft both make a bad habit of paying companies to keep exclusivity which is stupid. They should be spending that money on developing or supporting their own exclusives that way it'd be win win for PS and Xbox fans alike. lmao, I love the retarded rate up rate down system on these comments. It's so obvious that there's a noticeably larger 360 fanbase on Gamespot than anything else.
Was it really foolish to not include a HDD from a "Hardcore" gamer stand point or good business sense on M$'s part. The fact of the matter is that you do not need a HDD to play nearly the entire 360 library. I know it sucks to not have a HDD but does the general population really care? Parents will see that $199 price tag and say, "hey that's rather cheap compared to the other consoles. Yes, I don't doubt that devs want more space. They always want more space. I remember my first coding class in highschool. It was on a Mac Power PC using Hypercard. For my final project I created an RPG similar to Arcana or Shining in the Darkness. I remember constantly running out of space on the tiny floppy disks and getting pissed off. Developers always want something more. Just listen to what Kojima had to say about MGS4 not being able to fit on Blu-ray. Also, Yes the PS3 is more powerful than the 360 but is it useful power? I still say more symmetrical cores is always better than the Cells approach.
@tobkinator No I am not personally a game developer but I am going to school in a computer software technology program and probably bridging into computer software engineering. I read a lot of materials from devs blogs and I personally have friends who have coded for PS3, 360, and even one that worked on the stuff for the n-gage, lol. @Cpsiffo Fairly I can't really say the majority of the sources that I'm drawing from are 100% unbiased. The fact of the matter is there are a lot of developers and some of my friends who have worked on projects that were on PS3 and 360 have said the things I am repeating. From everything I've read and been told it does not take significantly longer to code for the PS3 it's more just coding for the PC/360 is the norm so less people are familiar with PS3. Sony supposedly knows this and they are very active in releasing tools for dev kits on a regular basis to make development go faster and smoother. Even you're not denying that the PS3 CPU chipset is more powerful than the 360's. Granted I too have also been told that a lot of coders that work on games prefer the architecture of regular style chips and the cell processor is designed better for data crunching than gaming but again most people who talked about that said it's still preference and just the norm to work with intel/IBM style chips. The thing you can't argue though is the fact devs like blu-ray and the standard HDD. It was foolish that 360 didn't include a standard HDD given there focus on DLC and the fact that they pioneered the standard console HDD.
"development issues" = we're still not sure how to use this new system and we're too lazy to figure it out...sorry
The game looks like crap, so I really don't care. And to end the argument, the PS3 is more powerful but yes it is hard to develop for. As someone else said, that's why multiplat games are noticeably better looking on the 360.
Aside from Gears, I have always been partial to the PS3's exclusives. Last gen Xbox was the underdog, now the PS3 is. Weird.
Sweet jesus, and I'm going to have to know what all this means in my course. So not cool. Oh well, I suppose it could be worst. I could be a clown.
@ Simple_malk, You should look inward if you think it's fanboyism when industry insiders such as developers say the PS3 is difficult to code for. The PS3 is an extremely complicated machine to program for. You really need to understand how it works. There are 9 different asymmetrical threads of information that a programmer has to be concerned with on the PS3 whereas on the 360 there are only 6 symmetrical threads to deal with . It gets even more complicated when you also take into account the fact that 7 of those 9 threads are highly specialized and cannot perform the same tasks as the single, more powerful main Power PC core. The 360 has 3 symmetrical Power PC cores which pretty much work the same way a standard multi-core PC chip works. The only difference being that a PC can run parrallel threads on a single core and the 360 can only run serial threads per core (The same as the PS3 btw). So the PS3 has higher THEORETICAL calc crunching power but what good is all that THEORETICAL power if it becomes ridiculously tedious to acheive. This is exactly why multiplatform games look better on the 360. they take far less time to work on and are similar to the already tried and true PC architecture. If I were working in games I might just steer clear of the PS3 as well. It's just too much of a hassle. The Cell was designed to get more out of less. Not to make it easier for developers. It's a cheaper way of making multi-core chips but I'll stick with my symmetrical Quad-core in my PC thank you very much. Anyway, as far as THQs decision goes, I have to say it's kind of disappointing that they don't have more faith in their game to cancel it for the PS3 when the game is already done. They are relying too heavily on the holiday season to generate sales for this game. I guess they feel the US market is kind of lost for the PS3 in terms of multiplatform game sales. In a way, I kind of agree though considering the PS3 has trouble breaking in to the NPD top 10 game sales month after month. Still, they should release it anyway for the PS3.
I love it when people say developers are "lazy" for not learning to develop for the PS3. Maybe they don't want to waste time learning, when the 360 already has such a stranglehold on gaming sales? Think about it. They're not going to waste time when they can easily make a decent game in half the time.
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/934/934331p1.html Gamespot is slow and THQ is a bunch of liars. Developing on the PS3 isn't harder per se. it's just most game companies are use to coding for PCs and the 360 is basically the equivalent of an older gaming computer. Everyone complained initially about the PS2 in the exact same way until they learned how to code for it and make use of the emotion engine. To the person who said that PS3 is bad hardware you need to get your head examined. The PS3 and 360 may have very similar GPUs and even generally ATI's are more reliable (the 360's GPU.) The CPU chipsets are miles apart any programmer that isn't a complete micro$oft fan will tell you that the cell processor is way more powerful. Also the other thing developers love is Blu-Ray and a standard HDD, 360 they really have to spend more time cutting out stuff to make it fit or compress the data where PS3 they have massive amounts of storage. I'm by no means saying that 360 is a crappy system but if you can look past your fan-boyisms you'll see that the PS3 is the better system to develop for. Whether this'll change the console race is totally unpredictable but looking at PS2 vs Xbox in the end of that race Xbox games looked slightly better than PS2 games (we're basically in the reverse this time the PS3 being the slightly more powerful system.) The only thing is I bet microsoft will release a new console and pull support on 360 way before sony ever would so life cycle wise, the PS3 could easily catch up based on that. Microsoft is notorious for churning out products out quickly one after another so don't be surprised when you see the next Xbox getting introduced probably a year from now based on the time between the Xbox and 360 launch. THQ is a failing company that hasn't released a single note worthy game in recent years. The original DAHs games were mediocre anyways I could careless but this shows most likely THQ is just pandering to micro$oft. What other reason would they release the game on PS3 in AU and not the US.
GAMESPOT IS BIAST FOR THE 360 nemesi609. IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN IN ALL THE GRAPHICS COMPARISONS THEY PICK GAMES THAT EVERYBODY KNOWS IS BETTER FOR THE XBOX.. BIAST! IF YOU WANT REAL INFORMATION GO TO ign.com CAUSE THEY AREN'T LIKE GAMESPOT!
@hoboman2: excuse me? according to every 360 vs. ps3 graphics comparison done by gamespot, the 360 has matched or outperformed the ps3 in almost every test. so where is your proof that the ps3 has "overshadowed" the 360? im not trying to fanboy, but couldnt help put down this fanboy. I know the ps3 has the potential to outperform every system out there (barring high performance pc's) but it hasnt yet, so get your facts straight.
thats ok, THQ hasnt made a good game in a long while...but what can you expect from a lazy company who puts all its resources into rehashed wrestling games.
your right. of course it won't matter until killzone 2 comes along. but i think that KZ2 will just make more fighting as 360 fan boys will try to pick it apart. we'll see.
nah man, you suck. your just happy that the ps3 won't be able to overshadow the 360 this time. (excluding fallout 3)
Yet another game taken away from the GS3. You've got to love it how sony fans always say its because the PS3 hardware is more difficult to work with, but its really because it just sucks. Bad hardware + bad system = The ultimate culmination of badness. Oh well at least PS3 still works as a Bluray player, albeit a more expensive one.
they said they're halting development, it's not like they said they're not going to release it for the PS3 anyhow, I was getting the X360 port... well, if it's any good I'm getting the X360 port, if not I'm just not getting it
development issues? game developers need to just stop being lazy and figure out how to develop for ps3. yeah its a more complex system to work on but as soon as developers begin to actually take the time to work on ps3 all games should be better. in my opinion xbox is really holding ps3 back. developers have to squeeze a game onto a dvd then they just port it to ps3. most games are a little too short for my taste when theyre xbox exclusives or multiplat.
