I really wish that Marvel would allow someone to make a Thor/ Ironman/etc game without it being tied to a movie. There is a potential for an awesome game from these IPs.
Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston to reprise respective roles as the God of Thunder and his half-brother Loki in next spring's tie-in to comic book blockbuster.
When Marvel Studios releases its Thor feature film next spring, the Norse God of Thunder and his nemesis Loki will be portrayed by mere mortals Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, respectively. As if bringing gods to life in a believable manner weren't a tall enough order for the pair, Sega today announced that the actors will also be lending their likeness and voices to the upcoming game tie-in to the movie.
Although it will feature the stars of the film, Sega's Thor: God of Thunder will be an original action adventure that draws inspiration from the Asgardian Avenger's numerous four-color exploits. The game will be set in the Marvel worlds of Norse mythology, with Ulik, Ymir, Surtur, and other foes providing Thor with opposition in addition to Loki.
Hemsworth is best known as playing the role of Captain James Kirk's father in the opening scene of last year's Star Trek revamp. He is also set to appear in a remake of Red Dawn and reprise his role as Thor in a film based on the Marvel superhero team The Avengers, currently set for 2012. Hiddleston has enjoyed success on stage and in TV series like Return to Cranford and Wallander, which starred Thor director Kenneth Branagh.
While the announcement ensures the film's two biggest roles will be faithfully replicated, there are a number of notable actors in the film's supporting cast that may go unrepresented in the game. Sega did not confirm if stars like Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Renee Russo, Stellan Skarsgard, or Tadanobu Asano would be lending their likenesses or voices to the game.
Now if only we got professional voice actors that actually fit the character personalities in JRPGs...
Not to deviate from the point of the article, but did I really see that there is a Red Dawn remake in the works? I'm not in any position to judge, but have we really reached that point?
Keneth branagh directing thor the film?!?!? I cant imagine he aspires to direct comic books, he must be desperate. From what ive seen of his previous efforts he will have to work hard to make this one good. Also as a "superhero" thor sounds a bit gay
@PlatimumPaladin Sorry about the misquote, for the life of me I read the comment and just automatically put the quote and the name together, my mistake. As far as being offended by the practice of hustling kids and their parents out of money yea I think its pretty lame to sell a substandard product to an over eager yet clueless target demographic. Part of me resents it because alot of the movies that have tie in games could actually work quite well if done correctly, with a decent budget and a workable schedule. But instead of making a worthwhile game Sega chooses to make the equivalent of Superman 64 and they keep doing it because the target demographic doesn't know any better. But am I fuming angry about it... no. it's just a little pet peeve of mine, it annoys me but i ain't losing sleep over it.
@PlatinumPaladin "As for the cast being involved, even if Natalie Portman's only part in this game was that she came round your house and gave you a lap dance just for buying it, it wouldn't be enough for me to waste a penny on this tripe." £40 for a lapdance from portman? well worth it i say!!
@FidelSarcastro That paragraph you that you quoted, does the notion that these games are the technological version of the Pied Piper offend you? I only ask as it must have gotten you so angry that you mis-quoted the name of who wrote it (not that I'm being picky).
"You are assuming that we are the games target audience. We are not. The target audience are kids who are taken to see the film and immediately start to pester their parents to get the game so that they can experience the awesomeness that they've just witnessed." - NoSoup4Me So lets all call it what it is, they set out to release a substandard product around the time of release so they can hopefully make a quick buck on hapless youths who don't know any better, to dupe them out of their money in exchange for a box filled with empty promises.
@ NoSoup4Me; You are assuming that we are the games target audience. We are not. The target audience are kids who are taken to see the film and immediately start to pester their parents to get the game so that they can experience the awesomeness that they've just witnessed. Unfortunately, the vast majority of kids couldn't identify a half-decent game if it meant saving their favorite trainers with the flashing lights. Nor are games designed to advertise the movie. It's more the other way round. The game takes advantage of the licenses in order to make some quick and cheap income for the license holders and all involved. The only way you can stop these games being made is if you stop kids from watching the movies. As for the cast being involved, even if Natalie Portman's only part in this game was that she came round your house and gave you a lap dance just for buying it, it wouldn't be enough for me to waste a penny on this tripe.
Exclusivity69 Posted Jul 21, 2010 12:16 am GMT . These movie tie in games are made to help promote the games, not be high quality games themselves, so do cry, and moan because these low budget games were too short, and only cost around 35$ ______________________________________________________________ Sega also said how great the next Ironman was gonna be compaired to the last one. These movie tie in games are made to help promote the game? Shouldn't the game be awesome then? These aren't budget games. Ironman 2 was priced @ 60$ on release. It's still 49$ @ gamestop. If they make a high qualitly game people will buy it , making a game half assed because its a movie tie-in is bad business. If this trend with game companies keeps up people will just stop buying the movie garbage games , and ones that could be cool won't get made because of how lazy they've gotten with these games.
Sega... i have my doubts just by hearing their name, because even whit the huge material they had in the past with the ironman saga, they just screw up a great oportunity. best we can wait from them its a G.o.W bad copy.
Will be very surprised for this to be anything but a not so great God of War-Clone. Shame, cause the Thor comic book mythos is so rich with material, it could make for a really awesome game. But it probably won't.
Let's take a look at the last few sega marvel movie tie in games... Incredible Hulk... steaming turd Iron Man... nutty lincoln log Iron Man 2... flabby piece of fecal matter I have a feeling that Sega is gonna be dropping a hot steamy deuce and that pile of doo-doo will be called Thor. You would think that gamers would learn from past mistakes and stay away from this game like it was the plague, maybe then Marvel or Sega would stop making ****.
Guess sega probably hasn't learned much from the two iron man games or the Incredible hulk title they released (I still believe hulk ultimate destruction is better) Also i believe if anyone should make comic book games i'd prefer either Activision (since they did an pretty good job with both Ultimate Alliance games) Or Capcom since they've actually done the marvel characters justice with the Versus series of games including the upcoming Marvel vs Capcom 3. but that's jut my personal opinion!!!
I can see this getting at best a 7.0 and at worst a 3.5. Movie games really suck and when they don't suck their just good. Sometimes people should start on the game as soon as they hear word of the movie and instead maybe release the game a few days AFTER the movie. Sheesh, why do they always rush? Oh wait, probably to get more money due to the hype of the movie. Now it makes sense.
I'll go see the film when it comes out. I'm not wasting my time on the obvious train wreck waiting to happen.....
@008Zulu games based on movies can work, the developer just needs to stop rushing it which is impossible. This game is gonna suck looool
@Darth_Nater307 I do but its not hard to design thor controls. Simple Hammer Smash Lightning and Fly....
@EDD213 My friend, if you knew SEGA's track record with games based of Marvel movies (Iron Man & Iron Man 2), you shouldn't expect much from this.
