Thief developers have no plans for competitive multiplayer

Developer Eidos Montreal not looking to recreate the kind of competitive multiplayer modes seen in games like Tomb Raider.

The next-gen reboot of Thief isn't currently planning on featuring any form of competitive multiplayer component, according to developer Eidos Montreal.

When asked by Eurogamer if Thief would follow in the footsteps of Square Enix's recent Tomb Raider and include a form of competitive multiplayer, producer Stephane Roy said developer Eidos Montreal has no plans for anything like that.

"Right now, let's say competitive multiplayer, like the example you just gave us - Tomb Raider - there is no plan for that," said Roy.

Roy also confirmed that the team was looking into multiplayer options, possibly in the form of a challenge mode, but asserted that the main focus is make a single-player game.

"We are looking to see if there is maybe a challenge mode with some online component, but I'm going to be very honest with you - our main goal with this team is to give you the best single-player experience, just to bring back this franchise, to convince you we're part of the future and not something holding onto the past.

"It's really demanding, so I don't want to see my team wasting any energy… I want to see them focusing on that," concluded Roy.

For more information on Thief, GameSpot's Kevin VanOrd recently saw the game in action.

Thief is due out for PlayStation 4, PC and "other next-gen platforms" in 2014.

There are online games, and there are single player games, try and mix them, and you end up with diablo III and Simcity. Good to see someone has learned the lesson the outcomes of those games should have taught developers.

It's shocking to me a dev has some common sense these days, but what's even more amazing is that every comment I see on this page agrees with their choice. Makes my faith in humanity return.

@jhonel83Unrelated to your meaning, but I just wanted to say that at first glance i thought it said "Makes my faith AND humanity return". I thought it was referencing dark souls at first. But then I read it and realized it didn't. That's all i had to say.

It's all about the intimacy of the single player experience. Multi-player on Thief would be like your wife of many years saying "Honey, I want to have a multi-player relationship now."

Multiplayer could still work, look at the multiplayer mod for... Thief 1 was it? I forgot.

This is actually quite reassuring. Every bit of Thief news so far, for me, has been either "oh awesome!" or "oh groan, what are they doing to my game." This article is one of the former.

I've been playing this game since 1999. I do not EVER want to see a multi-player anything attached to it.

Finally! A developer that isn't afraid to keep a single-player game as a single-player game instead of tacking on a multiplayer mode.

we have lots of multiplayer games with shitty campaigns. what, everyone who plays multiplayer on those games play it only for a few minutes and then get bored of it because is generic as shit. forget about multiplayer and make an epic campaign

I'm glad, they should focus on the main game.

Adding in competitive multiplayer in everything is like having sex with your cousin, just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should. On a more serious note, I'm happy with this decision, it's good to know that they focus on what's important instead of what's "in".

jhonel83

@toshineon , somehow your analogy degusts me. You CAN have sex with your cousin? where do you live, so I can stay well away? :)

@jhonel83 @toshineon Hahaha, that kind of humor is common where I grew up, but I can see why some people can find it offensive. As to your question, I live in Sweden, but we're not the only country that doesn't outlaw it, quite a lot of countries are the same.

Well that deserves a round of applause. Glad to see at least one developer focused on giving the players a well designed and executed story without wasting time on a MP feature nobody will remember in two months.

I take it this is a single player focused game considering the last one came out 9 years ago, so I hear anyway. So yeah, adding multiplayer would be a bad idea considering the track record with games meant to be single player trying to add multi. It will only be an add-on and if it takes away from SP people will be pissed.

Don't copy something like Tomb Raider. Multiplayer can be pulled off if it was as unique as Dark Souls, which blends multiplayer and co op into one.

Thief was always meant to be a single player experience, I'm glad they don't fall into the awful trend of forcing multiplayer in everygame.

Yay!  Competitive multiplayer on games like this is honestly a gigantic waste of developer time and resources.  These games work best as single player experiences.  Save the Multiplayer for games like unreal tournament or world of warcraft.  Take us back to what made games great!  A good story, a fully fleshed out Single Player game allows for the game mechanics to be centered on that experience.  This usually makes the game in question much better at delivering a focused enjoyable experience to the player.

No there's a developer talking sense! I think this is definitely a purchaser now! And I'll bet the single player will be all the better for being the focus of the game's development.
