The Witcher dev teases new cyberpunk RPG

CD Projekt Red releases teaser image for upcoming role-playing game hinting at futuristic setting with guns; full announcement slated for tomorrow.

The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red has offered a glimpse into the company's future. Today, the Polish studio released a concept image for a new mystery AAA role-playing game in development at the company, hinting that the project may be set in the future.

The image (at right) depicts a man wielding a futuristic-looking handgun and wearing eyeglasses boasting some sort of computerized heads-up display.

Other details are not available, but gamers won't have to wait long to know what CD Projekt Red is up to. The company will broadcast its annual Summer Conference tomorrow on its Facebook page at 1 p.m. EDT, where the project will be announced in earnest.

Speculation about new projects at CD Projekt Red was sparked earlier this month when job listings at the studio revealed the firm was at work on two new role-playing games, one of which would be an entirely new intellectual property. The other game is to be set in a "mature dark-fantasy world" and may be a follow-up to 2011's much-praised The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

Instead of running with blades in The Witcher we get Blade Runner, lol.

CDPR is the last AAA developer that can give such a mature, gritty, smart genre the right treatment. All the other studios went corporate and/or infantile (in Diablo case both).

I'm only concerned about the cyberpunk style they're using. I'm not an cyberpunk expert here but I'm pretty sure the style has shifted away from leather vests and colourful mohicans twenty years ago. Matrix, Deus Ex and Syndicate are the setting the trend now. Oh well, we shall wait and see...

well EXTREMELLY GOOD  dev team but the ciber punk theme sounds pretty bad but come on it's the witcher dev team were talking about so we shouldn't expect a bad game

I've long given up hope of ever seeing a great Shadowrun RPG that builds on what was started with the 16-bit games, but this could be the next best thing.

@SlimeSwayze Have you not heard of the successfully-funded Kickstarter Shadowrun RPG or what? They are already starting development. You need a PC, Mac or iPad to play it, though. I forgot if they have an Android version or not.

@syafiqjabar I've seen that, but it's now what I was looking for in terms of a new Shadowrun RPG.  I was hoping for something more like the old Genesis version--open world and not turn based.  Hopefully this will be closer to that.

wait... an independent developer who puts NO drm on their games now actually has money to fund not one... but TWO AAA budget games? How can this be possible? Surely there must be some mistake there! Piracy is the bane of the industry! The company cannot be growing, right gamers? To grow, companies NEED DRM, on disc DLC and online codes! Right? Riiight????

Cool as this could be, I'd still like to see them finish the Witcher series out sooner, rather than later.

I'm wondering If this will be on a console as well as PC.

I have The Witcher 2 on PC & so far CDR have proven to be excellent In terms of both content & especially the way that extra content Is handled.

I have faith until proven otherwise.

I haven't played a lot of the withcer 2 but I've loved what I have played (maybe 10 hrs in the game at most) but I've always loved the cyber punkish movies and such so this would be incredible to be done

As soon as cyberpunk is mentioned, Deus Ex pops into the minds of gamers everywhere. Although, I wouldn't classify it is a role-playing game at heart, but with concepts mixed into the final product. A satisfying franchise, however, I dislike the fact that the original is so similar to the Thief series.

Like I said before Gamespot deleted my comment. Please don't mess up the PC version. Develop it for PC's first than port it to consoles, everything works out better that way.
