The Witcher 2 sells 400K, coming to Xbox 360
CD Projekt Red's action role-playing game makes a strong debut in first week; port to Microsoft's system on the way by end of 2011.
It's been a magical week for CD Projeckt Red, as the studio today announced that its action role-playing game The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings made a strong debut at retail and that it has bigger plans for the game.
Speaking at the CDP Summer Days presentation (available to re-watch via Ustream), CD Projekt Red said The Witcher 2 sold through 400,000 units in its debut week. While it was a strong premiere, the game will have to continue to perform if it wants to catch up to the 1.5 million units its 2007 predecessor tallied.
Also noted in the company's sunny announcement today was word that The Witcher 2 is indeed--following rumors--heading to the Xbox 360. According to its developer, protagonist Geralt's console adventure will come at "no quality compromise" when it is released at the end of 2011. No mention was made of a Witcher 2 release on the PlayStation 3.
"We believe [The Witcher 2] will be one of the most complex and mature RPGs that ever went to the console market," said a CD Projekt Red staffer.
Further, the developer said gamers can "expect the same experiences" with the console version, as compared to the PC iteration. Speaking about the debates that often erupt when comparing PCs to consoles, the developers said, "It's not about the size of the textures, but how you use them."
The Witcher 2 is a direct sequel to the events of the original and picks back up with professional monster slayer Geralt following a failed assassination of Temerian royalty. Geralt then sets out on a quest to track down the king's attempted killers, while also continuing to pursue those responsible for murdering other witchers.
