The Witcher 2 goes gold

By Eddie Makuch

CD Projekt Red finishes development on May 17-dated PC role-playing game.

It's nearly time for PC gamers to get hexed. Polish development shop CD Projekt Red has announced that it has finished development on The Witcher 2--the sequel to the acclaimed original--and that the game disc in now on its way to mass production.

Formally titled The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, the dark fantasy game has gone gold ahead of its May 17 date with the PC crowd. The game will be available on that date in both a $50 Premium Edition and a $130 Collector's Edition.

The Witcher 2 is a direct sequel to the events of the 1.5-million-unit-selling original and picks back up with professional monster slayer Geralt following a failed assassination of Temerian royalty. Geralt then sets out on a quest to track down the king's attempted killers, while also continuing to pursue those responsible for murdering other witchers.

CD Projekt Red has crafted an all-new game engine for The Witcher 2 and, in the process, has redone many of the tools that the developers used to create the game. As a result, CD Projekt Red hopes to create a smoother play experience with faster combat and a more engrossing feel.

Sounds like it's going to be cool. I was fond of The Witcher, but it had some serious flaws. Hope they improve it this time. Whatever happens, this will be NO MATCH for skyrim whatsoever.

Thoroughly enjoyed the first one, I know for a fact that this won't disappoint us RPG fans. I'm already excited for the 3rd franchise!

@Ladiesman17 I chose a laptop instead of a DESKTOP because of the nature of my job that I have to change my work place on a monthly basis so I can't stay at one place for my PC ...

This will be a cult-classic like Baldur's Gate and Dragon Age Origins did... :D whoaaa..

@shkar why you buying ACER laptop for $850 that's too damn expensive, you could get supercharged PC for that price, and It also could run every PC Games at maximum setting, I'm not recommending playing PC games on any laptop, because you'll get less experiences. ;)

@shkar im sure it will run it, but just not at max.

@tes4eva I paid around 850 $ for my LAPTOP ,,,it's ACER ASPIRE 5750G ,,,,yeah the price is good because I bought it in KUALA LUMPUR at the ACER store............... But from your comments are you telling me that my machine will not run this game ??? this will be a headache for me....

I thought Crysis 2 was going to be the game to make me buy a new video card like the first game did, I went from a 7600gt to a 8800gt which still spanked Crysis 2 in the ass lol. If my SLI setup is not enough for these game I will upgrade just to see all the boobs, blood, guts and bush this game has to offer at its maximum splendor.

@shkar I think it'll run ok. You may have to lower the settings a bit but it'll definitely run on your laptop.

@shkar how much did you pay for your laptop? if you payed around 1000 you should return it and build a desktop. for around $1300 any game you throw at it it will run on max. if your interested ill help you choose componets.

@syafiqjabar if for the next game you want a sub-par, easy, short console witcher ported to pc than you better hope this dont get ported to console this time around. look at what happened to dragon age 2. and look at the diferences between morrowind and oblivion. im tired of devs catering to players and making every game super easy or it has to have multiplayer or its a 6 hr. game. so if you want a 6 hr. easy game with multiplayer, then by all means lets hope they port.

syafiqjabar

@tes4eva There's really nothing in the game's gameplay that prevents it from working on consoles. If anything I want more people to play this.

@shkar I've played new games on lesser computers than that. Maybe you need to adjust settings a bit or just set it to medium.

I usually wait a year after release to purchase singl player games cause i see no point in paying full price for a single player...however, i may buy this right away after the good reviews com in just to support a company that focuses on PC game development rather than an after thought after consoles

When I bought a new LAPTOP last month this game was in my mind,,,,,,,,,,Anybody knows if my laptop can handle this game? I have a core i7 2630om 2 ghz with turbo boost up to 2.9 ghz,,nVidia GeForce GT540M CUDA technology 2GB ,,,,,RAM =4GB DDR3 ...........

Getesh, there is no date for console; just like the first the ywant it on console, but the game is so beautiful that it is doubtful it will compare graphically. And even then, they keep saying they want it on console, and yet on tv, one of the dev said they are working on console, and he still denies it 5 mns later. It would be good for console player if it is released, but I'd say so far it's 50/50. After all the yworked for more than a year on The witcher's 1 console version and it never came out.

The game is already going to be on ps3 and the 360, so any hopes of them not porting it was gone long ago. Matter of fact they already planned for it to be on consoles, this is old news.

tes4eva

i just hope they leave this on pc because if they port to consoles then witcher 3 might be designed with console in mind and there goes another great franchise. o well this one is gonna be great regardless. i just hope i can come up with 500 before release so i can get two more 24" monitors and run this in eyefinity

Well, I remember with the first game they released the game, then several months later re-released it with all the patches and improvements as the enhanced edition. So while the collector's edition looks like it might be juicy, I wonder if I should just hold off for several months to a year and see what happens. On the other hand, I finished Dragon Age 2 and have a while to wait for Dungeon Siege 3 and Skyrim, so maybe I should pick this up soon... Decisions, decisions.

Last preview i read this game is looking pretty epic. Im now torn...cause its single player and i usually wait until a year after release to buy single players at a largely reduced rate...on the other hand, i really like to support companies that are sticking to developement of games for the PC

@xViiRGIL even i remember spending a lot of time on the 1st part and enjoyed every bit, ahh i still remember those foggy rainy clouds, roaming the streets of the city in the night time to hunt down monsters...damn can't wait for this one..

@Cobretti1818 yeah it has the caliber to be the game of the year, but also consider Skyrim, which I suppose is the direct and the toughest contender for the GOT title..let's wait and watch.. Peace

Wrangler044
Wrangler044

I would rather play this game, then spend money on DLC for DA2, which was good, but not worth extended play. I like the timing of Witcher now so its easier to complete before Skyrim comes out.

RAMDAS_666
RAMDAS_666

@RapidFirE53211 DA2 is not a waste of money for me atleast...yeah give me thumbs down... Play the game on Nightmare difficulty, download high-res pack from the official site, don't play it as a sequel, which is a hard fact to digest, but keep these things in mind and den play it, i feel this game would turn out pretty descent under these circumstances... Well on the Current topic, Witcher 2 is the way we all should be looking at now...this and Sykrim are the games which we will hopefully remember for years to come.. Peace

Looking forward to spending my money on this instead of wasting it on DA2 :P
