The Sun Crosswords coming to DS

Britain gets its very own newspaper-based puzzler courtesy of Mercury Games.

Back in February, The New York Times, although reportedly not impressed with the PlayStation 3, was clearly impressed enough by the Nintendo DS to bring a selection of its crossword puzzles to the handheld.

But now Brits need not wrestle with American spelling, personality names, geography, and vocab. It may not quite be The New York Times, but red-top tabloid The Sun will be following suit and releasing a selection of its very own British crossword puzzles for DS owners this November.

There will be over 1,000 crosswords, each with two sets of clues: one cryptic and one easier "coffee time" set. Crossword addicts will be able to "write" their answers directly onscreen with the stylus. Hints will be available for those who get stuck.

Mercury Games will be publishing, and Atari will be distributing, The Sun Crossword Challenge in Europe for a recommended retail price of £19.99. It has not yet been age-rated.

The Sun? That's practically a gossip magazine for everyone at home. I guess the interface looks OK, but I'd much rather have seen something from The Times or The Guardian, something with a bit of class to it...

dimmerwit: I would hardly call the article 'estoeric'. 1) Have you heard about uk.gamespot.com (which shares news with the main site)? 2) The article refers to a game released across Europe (population: 710,000,000). Just because America (population: 300,000,000) doesn't get it doesn't mean it's not important. Dude, I'm English. The Sun ain't important, it's trash. And this article is esoteric to the UK audience, yet it's also been posted on the american site, it should be exclusive to the UK one.

The sun... ok Nintendo it's alright to bring puzzles for the console but from the sun?!?!?! @theclaw135 Can you beat this list with PS3 games? LoZ: Phantom Hourglass, New super mario bros, Metroid prime hunters, kirby's squeak squad, Final fantasy III, Yoshi's island, Pokemon D/P, Phoenix Wright, Advance Wars, Mario kart DS, Nintendogs, Elite beat agents, castlevania DoS/PoR, ACWW, Lunar knights, hotel dusk... just to start, against Resistance, heavenly sword and... and... air? Along with GBA titles?!?! There's NO WAY ps3 can beat the DS, EVER. Also remember Europe doesn't have BC AT ALL and may I ask how many people use their PS3's for listening to audio Cd's? Lmao

Not bad, but they should add a feature to enable downloadable games

TBQH, PS3 has a much larger and overall better library than DS. Compatibility with PS1 games, PS2 games (aside from 40GB), PS3 games, DVD movies, Blu-Ray movies, CD audio, Super Audio CD, built-in web browser, etc... Versus only running DS games, and GBA games minus virtually all functions that involve the link port. The web browser costs extra, and officially Nintendo's MP3 player was only sold in Japan/UK. Not USA.

that probably be an easy crossword, every answer would most likely be some slang term for breasts "Four letters, ends with S, synonym for 'shirt potatoes'."

Oh dear god. What next? Heat magazine Sudoku?

I wonder if they have some sort of nudy pic if you win a crossword... that would fit the theme of the sun alright. :( This game won't sell very well - people won't take it seriously. When it comes to crosswords, you need to have official names like "oxford" and things like that for people to take notice of serious sort of games like crosswords. These kinds of games are there to challenge your mind, they won't suit everyones tastes, but it sure beats carrying around a giant paper and a pen to get your crossword fix. But on another note - they should really lose the whole "crossword" thing and just end up calling them rainy-day-games. Games like word find, naughts and crosses (wireless) would be a good feature to have aswell as crosswords.. I will try this title out - but if I wanted a serious crosswording session, I wouldn't get my crossword fix from the sun..

I would be ashamed to own that on Nintendo DS. :P

The Sun, the most deplorable, racist, dimwitted, ignorant, sexist newspaper in the mainstream press, whose articles are written at the reading age of a ten year-old. Ugh, this filth should not be allowed to pollute gaming. I imagine the game will be something like this: 1 Down: Football player who looks like Shrek 3 Across: Colour of [Insert name of 'celebrity' wretch here]'s thong

The Sun has crosswords? I didn't think people who bought the sun could read.

Hopefully this will reduce sales of The Sun! Haw haw!

Esoteric, British articles like this, really shouldn't be posted on an american website.
