The Suffering announced

Midway announces that it's working on a third-person survival horror game set in a maximum-security penitentiary.

Midway Games has today announced that it's working on a third-person survival horror game called The Suffering. The game, in which players will assume the role of a death row prisoner named Torque, is set in a maximum-security penitentiary besieged by the ghosts of previously executed inmates.

"The Suffering redefines terror with a chilling look into a penitentiary haunted by apparitions of executed prisoners grotesquely reincarnated as the methods of execution that befell them," said Helene Sheeler, vice president of marketing at Midway.

Having been inadvertently freed when the apparitions took control of the prison, Torque sets out to uncover his past and unlock the deadly secrets of The Suffering. As he progresses through the game's nine levels armed with up to 10 different weapons and the ability to morph into a monstrous alter ego, Torque will be confronted not only by a dozen different types of grotesque apparitions, but also by fellow inmates and prison guards. Depending on how players choose to proceed through the game, their eventual reward will be one of three different endings.

A number of the creatures in The Suffering have been designed by Stan Winston, whose movie credits include Jurassic Park, Edward Scissorhands, and Aliens. The game is currently scheduled for release in the fall. We'll bring you more information as soon as it becomes available.
