The Last of Us season pass detailed

Dan Chiappini
By Dan Chiappini, Editor of GameSpot AU

Season pass to include single-player story content, day-one upgrades; multiplayer mode being revealed soon.

Naughty Dog’s upcoming apocalyptic survival game, The Last of Us, will receive post-launch single-player and multiplayer downloadable content, the developer has confirmed.

Available as individual packs or as a discounted season pass for US$19.99, day-one perks add increased in-game crafting speed, faster healing, a 9mm pistol reload speed upgrade, and a rifle clip capacity upgrade. A 90-minute making-of documentary video, titled "Grounded", is also included.

The first DLC pack, which marks the developer's debut making post-launch single-player content, will arrive once the game is on sale and will focus on story. “The journey and cast of characters in The Last of Us lends itself to thorough narrative exploration, and we’ve got more of the story to tell,” said Naughty Dog community strategist, Eric Monacelli.

The two remaining packs will each add additional multiplayer maps and other unspecified "expansions". While multiplayer for the game was confirmed late last year, and the developer has said it is the "best ever conceived", no specifics have been detailed. Monacelli said that the developer would reveal the information about the mode in the coming days.

The Last of Us will be available at retail and through the PlayStation Network as a digital download on launch day. Naughty Dog previously revealed that a unique application will allow players who buy digitally to begin playing while still downloading the game.

The Last of Us is due to release exclusively on the PlayStation 3 on June 14.

I really hope they show the multiplayer, I want to decide if I'm getting it digital or retail. I get my multiplayer games digital so I don't have to swap discs so much.

I wish they would just make the game with everything on it like they used to. All the fans who buy the game right away pay full price for the game and (singleplayer) DLC. All the other people don't really care and buy the cheaper GOTY edition. It's always like this and I don't think that's fair to the die hard fans for any game!

I can't believe that idiots are still saying stuff like "seems like an easy way for ND to make extra money". When are people going to realize it's the publisher that decides that stuff. Just STFU and get out. Also you don't just get a "few passive abilities" for $20. You get singleplayer and multiplayer DLC down the road for that $20. The "few passive abilities" are just what you get now so you get something right away as an incentive to buy the season pass now instead of waiting for the DLC to come out. SO again STFU and get out. F*cktards!

A few passive abilities for $20 hardly seems worth it at all. Why not just add it in the game-oh wait, silly me, that's not how the industry works.

@DamnILoveGames

You should think about learning to read.

DamnILoveGames

@lewishim666 @DamnILoveGames Ok, granted the $20 gets you more than just the passive abilities, but if it's anything like Uncharted it'll just be costume packs. I hope they don't screw up. All in all I would rather there wasn't any DLC, especially not day one.

IMHO, I think dlc like this can be a totall valid source of revenue for the devs, but only and only if it has no impact on the actual gameplay (difficulty etc) and is purely optional.

Kinda like hats.

I'll pass on season passes. I'll wait for a GOTY or Ultimate edition of this game. I will NOT be nickel and dimed. In fact, I dont buy games anymore until the GOTY or Ultimate comes out later.

@DarthLod Agreed. I've kicked myself before for not waiting. I always have games backlogged anyway if I need a gaming fix. May as well wait.

So another company gives us the cut version. I'll wait until they release the complete version otherwise they've lost a sale.

My point is that it's more like a fair paying field than a fair playing field. That's all. Seems like a sleazy way for ND to make more money.

I'm going to rent this game. If I enjoy it and feel that it has some good replay I'll pick up the Game of the Year edition containing all the DLC at a reduced price. I think prordering a game at $60 before the reviews come out is foolish.

I love all the overreactions to this:
"Fk this game"
"Cancelling preorder nao!"
"Derp derp not buying anymore"
So many modern games have DLC and Season Passes.  I don't understand people's thought processes.  Whatever the issue, you can't just buy the game and be happy with it?  Because they choose to release additional content (Oh mah geard it should already be in the game!) later on, it makes the whole game not worth buying?  I wonder how any game that has a Season Pass or DLC does well...oh wait, not everyone is so simple-minded!  I would understand refusing to buy the Season Pass or DLC but good lord...Bring on the hate now -.-

Yes you go ahead, bend over and take it. Good Roy! So many games do it so it must be alright! Weakest justification in existence right there.

@immortaltech6 @xRoYx You're assuming I'm actually getting the Season Pass haha.  I'm not saying it's alright at all.  Until you point out where I said that this business practice is alright, please, sit down and learn to read.

People overreact and need to get the hell over it.  Every time a Season Pass or DLC is revealed everyone cries about it.  If you don't like it, don't buy the Season Pass.  How hard is that for people like yourself to understand?

Divisionbell
Divisionbell

You're missing the point Roy. The point of refusing to buy the game is a message to the dev and their BS season pass. It's not a comment on the quality of the game itself. Personally I will be buying the game but not the season pass. I do agree with you though. The simple solution is to simply skip the season pass.

@xRoYx @immortaltech6 If you can't enjoy a game to the fullest, what's the point in playing it at all. If dlc is going to be released day one, that means it has already been developed and tested. That means it shouldl be in the original game but was taken out to squeeze money out of consumers. People whine an complain because enough people aren't stopping themselves from buying the season passes and day one dlc, so the practice will never stop. If people don't complain, it feels like this losing battle will be completly lost. Publishers and greedy companies need to be taught a lesson, and not rip off their loyal customers.

xRoYx

@immortaltech6 @xRoYx I'm simply defending the game haha.  Yes, the Season Pass business practice is a load of shit, but I don't go around to every article and whine about it. It's as unproductive as this conversation with you which, after this post, I won't be wasting anymore time on.  All I did was point out that people overreact too much.  Refusal to buy the Season Pass makes sense, but refusal to buy games does not.  Interpret my post however you want to, but you clearly did not read the original post correctly.

You defending it and jumping on people that don't equates to saying it's okay. You're telling me that your logical reasoning/ thought process was a fallacy in itself now?

@immortaltech6 The person saying "bend over and take it" is the one stating I'm trying to "look cool" haha.  You still never pointed out to me where I said that this business practice was ok ;)

So you're gonna cry about people "crying"? Get over yourself, consumers have a right to their opinion and the majority of it, as seen here, see and call it for what it truly is: nickel and diming greedy bs. Tacked on MP to disguise micro-transactions and DLC schemes to compensate for over-inflated Hollywood marketing budgets and lavish big corporation type expenses & salaries.

You just wanna look cool with your 5% opinion.

@TheWalkingGhost @jakehillebrand I don't like where the industry has gone with DLC, day one upgrades, preorder bonuses, etc. I'm not going to support that.  I had full intentions of purchasing this game but that rubbed me wrong. Maybe I will buy it when it comes out bundled in a steam sale.

sa2bmaster
sa2bmaster

@jakehillebrand @Flubbbs @TheWalkingGhost PS3 exclusives are completely impossible to come out on a Steam sale, and if you mean a PS3 digital PSN sale, that is not the same as Steam, as Steam is a PC only digital distribution service.

jakehillebrand
jakehillebrand

@Flubbbs @jakehillebrand @TheWalkingGhost Everything comes out in a steam sale, but if for some reason it doesn't I'm not too worried about it seeing how it is damn near "pay to win" anyways with "increased in-game crafting speed, faster healing, a 9mm pistol reload speed upgrade, and a rifle clip capacity upgrade." That kinda takes the fun out of it right there for me. It puts a bad taste in my mouth. Oh well, plenty of other games.

Saying you're not getting the game until they release a GOTY edition... is not how a game gets GOTY. Assuming this does at all.

Multiplayer will ruin this masterpiece. ND should add some more 20 hrs of gameplay rather then MP as 10 hrs of gameplay is nothing on Bluray.

@MatrixGamer78 i agree i thouroghly enjoyed all of Uncharteds games but uncharted 3 really left me feeling like there should have been more. Awesome story that just died too quickly in favor of the multiplayer, I see the same happening to this game even if they havnt focused on mp yet. I just keep hearing oh wait for mp, itll be epic, itll be the best, no thanx and the season pass offers 2 mp dlcs? for a game thats about the story? cmon really? so yeah i know where u are comin from

I wouldn't say the multiplayer is the best ever created if i wasn't 100% sure about that. I already pre-ordered this damn game and I hope they know what they're talking about and doing about those DLCs, which aren't looking so good to me.

Discounted season pass for $19.99? How about I wait until the actual complete game is $19.99?

Many moons ago cheat codes were fun Easter eggs to discover. Now cheat codes are being sold as pre order DLC announced before the game is even released. Is this why this game is taking so long to release? Deciding what content to cut and sell as DLC?

And what's with this tacked on multiplayer nonsense? I thought this game was being marketed as a single player game. I don't care who the dev is, Naugty Dog, Rockstar or whoever. Shit is an insult to consumers. Fuck that.
