The HotSpot ends 2011 on a high note with a visit from Star Wars: The Old Republic lead writer Daniel Erickson.
Why yes, this is the podcast you were looking for! In the final HotSpot of 2011, Star Wars: The Old Republic lead writer Daniel Erickson joins Kurtis Seid, Brendan Sinclair, and Tom Magrino to explain how one even goes about getting massively multiplayer online gamers to give two craps about a story. (Hint: Make it good.) Also, did you know Daniel used to be lead designer on EA's NBA Street franchise? Crazy!
Audio above, video below!
@GarGx1 yeah I guess (3 different genres)... but LucasArts wont see the reason to even touch Jedi Knight if all their focus is TFU or this MMO. If they took what was good in TFU and put it into the JK, it would have been a FLAWLESS GAME.
@blacksaibot you've included 3 different genres and 3 different developers in your short sentence. None of which can be compared to the others! The Jedi Knight series was fun and there's definatley room for anohter sequel. Sw:ToR is a completely different game and is a lot of fun. Basically an MMO with a single player story but if it's not for you then that's cool. Your right about the Force unleashed being trash.
No grind Decent graphics Absolutely wonderfull music Very good community Very Good support Amazing locations Starships battles Voice casting marvelous Quest are not boring (first time i feel the satisfaction finishing a quest after more than 6 years playing mmo's) Also new content has been hinted already check official forums In overall swtor is the best mmo to date end of story.
I'll never understand why MMO games get so much hate these days. They're a unique type of game that gives you the best social experience out of any genre. Granted they can get a little costy, but it's not like they demand your money EVERY month, just the months you want to play it. It's up to you if feel like paying for the month ahead if you're still enjoying it. Also, there's something about the sense of achievement you get from leveling up high or just obtaining a rare item or such which in my opinion gives greater boasting rights than that of getting achievements on console.
Wow, I'm glad to see so many positive comments for this game. I'm coming here more often now, everywhere I look ESPECIALLY mmorpg.com and metacritic, all everyone does in the comments section is just rip this game apart. This particular team at BioWare dedicated 3 years of their lives to give fans of both genres the ULTIMATE Star Wars mmorpg, and they more than delivered. I played in 2 of the last 4 beta weekends and then since first day of early access. I'm having an absolute blast and actually look forward to logging in, I haven't felt this way about an mmorpg in a LONG time. The ONLY explanation about all the hate is that these people play a different mmorpg and feel threatened, so in turn they bash the game and hope it will fail, which is beyond pathetic. They can argue all they want, but I KNOW it's true. Anyways, great video, and I'm logging back in, peace.
Story doesn't matter to everyone though, Some people stuck in the past don't feel that it is a true MMO unless there is just click on this guy, read what you have to kill, go kill it and return, without there being any real meaning behind it. I myself find most MMOs terribly boring and mundane. The Old Republic I find myself excited to play everyday. I find it more of an extremely flexible multiplayer massive-kotor game (not a mistype)! The story makes a difference! So does being a Star Wars fan (I myself have grown very tired of the fantasy middle-earth style setting, that plagues most MMOs). Some Quests are meh, but most are awesome, and the Class Quests are usually always pretty awesome! The game isn't revolutionary, but it does a lot of things right that MMOs in the past have suffered greatly from not having. The very best Latency I have seen in ANY MMO (both my gf and I, at the same time of playing, hover between 45ms and 80ms). Average is around 65ms, from NW Louisiana to an East Cost Server. The performance is pretty good at launch, though over time with GPU drivers, and patches it should improve a good amount. The game will not fail, like so many hoped (which is pathetic in a way) it would.
I hate this new direction the Hotspot has taken. Every podcast now just sounds like a paid advertisement for one particular game. It's disgusting.
Been playing SWTOR since early access. Game is great so far. Have not genuinely enjoyed myself so much in an MMO for a long time.
this was one of the best interviews i've ever seen. i hope you have the chance to interview more industry writers/designers in the future.
A Dragon Age Origins writer as a Lead Writer for Star Wars: The Old Republic? Of course it would work! DAO writing is amazing...
Best episode ive seen ! This game is great to, MMO's have really bored me lately but this has a great story that really pulls you in.
It was funny when tom magrino first started hosting hotspot to not know how to work the phone but now this is getting kind of ridiculous. I mean listening to user inputs was always very entertaining when brendan was hosting. Also, SWTOR is very good game, i recommend people playing it but these shows where they just talk about one game for an hour isn't very enjoyable. Don't know if others agree with me
Ok chaifz you're totally right Daniel Erickson should just join the gamespot panel he knows what he is talking about and a great character should join a real gamer.
i really enjoyed this episode of Hotspot, Daniel Erickson should just join the gamespot panel! Also he has an EPIC MAN BEARD!!! I am tad jealous....
I loved all the NBA street games. Actually... so did all my friends. They were some really great fun. And I don't even like sports games really! Great HotSpot this week.
I really dislike developer interviews taking up time on the podcast. Seems to me they should be a separate feature unto themselves as they tend to stifle the free form nature of typical Hotspot discussions.
I tested the game when it was in beta (thanks to gamespot's beta code) and I agree with what he said, the story really does make the game feel soo different from every other mmo. I really enjoyed the game.
i actually love the story in the game. I feel no need to rush and lvl to 50 like in wow, i enjoy the playin the game, im intrigued to know what gonna happen next
Amazing show, as usual. Thank you Hotspot cast, that was a great episode. But I have a question, will my pop quiz question ever be read?
I want to join the bunch of people begging for an audio-only out-takes episode! Please Brendan/Magrino, make this happen!
EA rips you off. Proof: Read the recent forum thread from their "free to play" Battlefield play4free community: http://battlefield.play4free.com/en/foru...?tid=61323 Boycott them, because you could be the next victim of their greed
SOOOO This is a RElaunch of an ol' episode?... ORIGINAL Star Wars shall always be dear N' close but this entire hour embodies what is strictly forbidden in organics, HUSH N LUSH. If Tdoodle McShea were included thangs might be different =D
Aren't there some things that Brendan cut from the show when he was hosting? I distinctly recall something about an abortion joke by Mc Shea during the duke nukem podcast, as well as Brendan saying on another occasion, "We could have something for the year end show right?" followed by a very awkward edit.
@Pangamaster most likely not. Magrino doesn't bother with that and Brendan is practically dead (on the inside).
Since I ditched buying Anno 2070 I'm tempted to buy this game because I'm bored to death, but I know once GW2 arrives I'll likely quit.
