The Evil Within announced by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami

UPDATE: Story details outlined. New survival horror title coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next-gen consoles in 2014.

Tango Gameworks, the studio helmed by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, has a new announced survival horror title called The Evil Within.

The Evil Within is due to be released on next-generation consoles, Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3 in 2014.

“We’re incredibly proud to announce The Evil Within,” Mikami said in a statement. “My team and I are committed to creating an exciting new franchise, providing fans the perfect blend of horror and action.”

A live action trailer for the game was also released, showing a man wrapping his body in barbed wire and a four-armed monster being birthed in a pool of blood.

No specifics about the game have yet been detailed.

Bethesda has been teasing the game this week using social media service Vine. The publisher has previously said it will make "considerably" more noise in 2013.

UPDATE: Bethesda's Japanese site recently revealed more information on the upcoming game The Evil Within (Psychobreak in Japan), developed by the Shinji Mikami-led studio Tango Gameworks.

The horror game will use id Software's latest graphic engine called id Tech 5. The game's plot centers on the exploits of a detective named Sebastian, who is whisked away into a world of death and madness during a mass murder investigation. The game will return to classic survival horror game roots set by titles like Alone in the Dark and the first Resident Evil. Players must survive with what little resources they can scrounge up in the game world. The game's environments will shapeshift and transform based on their actions in the game. The game will also feature an assortment of traps that can kill players fast, but the flip side is that they can use them against enemies in certain situations.

The Evil Within will be out in 2014 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Stay tuned to GameSpot for more information.

Shinji Mikami is a big name for the industry, for horror fans, and for me. He is such a talented individual, but he also learned with mistakes like most of those (everyone who knows how the development RE4 went knows what I mean). Hope he delivers: if we win everyone wins.

Oh, and remember, it's reads "blend of horror and action". Personally, I'll love to have an old school mode where checkpoints don't exist and the closest thing to it is using a save station.

The idea behind the trailer was very good, even if it could have had a better presentation, and I'd definitely love to see more.

question...what's going to happen to resident evil?i hope they make a new one with everything fixed but what i really wanna hope for is that some one buy it from Capcom...i'm seeing Capcom going down hill with 500 Km/h!

Shinji Mikami and Bethesda...

I have to admit, I was NOT seeing this combination coming.

What's next? Rockstar and EA Sports? (I'm sorry I shouldn't even joke about that, but lord knows Niko Bellic could use the exercise :P).

But this is good.

I pity horror fans. They have been mistreated so badly. First Silent Hill got raped, then Resident Evil got mutilated, and now Dead Space got flattened.

It's actually kind of ironic and quite fitting that horror franchises keep meeting tragic ends.

Let's hope The Evil Within fares better.

@TohouAsura Yea your order's wrong but you're right. Resident Evil was the first horror franchise to get the sodomy, almost immediately after it started.

I could go for some Survival Horror after Resident Evil and Dead Space sold out to the action genre.

@RabidBurpLooks like you only read the title, let me point out something for you ?We?re incredibly proud to announce The Evil Within,? Mikami said in a statement. ?My team and I are committed to creating an exciting new franchise, providing fans the perfect blend of horror and ACTION.?

we've heard this before

@Albelnox0 @RabidBurp If there was no action then you'd just have a flashlight and that's just boring nowadays. Some gun action is just that, action. It doesn't mean theatrics.

and Shinji Mikami did Resident evil 4, if you play that game which he directed of course, it has A LOT of action he was the one who shifted RE from horror to action.

@Albelnox0 @FOBlO I noticed that in re4 there was a shift in horror to action but if you take a look and 5 and 6, it's just too much action and no horror.

Game looks scary to say the least. Shinji Mikami is one of the masters of horror in games, day one for me! Totally unrelated but I would love a sequel to Shadows of the damned, bit sad that game went under many gamers radars, it wasnt perfect but had a great horror/dark humor Tarantino atmosphere. Mikami & Suda 51 should work together more often.

Haha..games are not even out and people are already complaining

Youve been asking true top new IP AAA horror games and when they ( Bethesda+Mikami) get this game people complain its not Fallout 4 or not interesting , those are the reasons why we stuck with the same IP all these years cos  majority  consumers doesnt give much   chance for developers to evolve create something new

LiquidGold

@Imperiacommando Its cause this generation of gamers complain about absolutely everything even if the game is amazing. They should learn some respect,  also they all deserve a damn good hiding. I would be happy to smack the lot of them and teach them some manners.

GAME STORY

When Detective Sebastian and his partner rush to the scene of a gruesome mass murder, a mysterious, powerful force is lying in wait for them. Witnessing the killing of fellow police officers one after another, Sebastian is then attacked and loses consciousness. Waking up in a land where monsters are wandering about, Sebastian has to fight his way through a world of death and its close friend madness in order to understand what?s going on. Sebastian has to face his fears in order to survive on a journey to discover what lies in the shadows of that mysterious force.

Key Features

  • A Return to Pure Survival Horror: From the father of the survival horror genre, Shinji Mikami. He appears once again as the director of this game, one which makes your blood run cold, but heats you right back up. Players must survive on limited resources, experiencing that supreme match of action and horror, that indescribable terror. To survive in an afflicted world, your anxiety and nerves will be pushed to the edge.
  • Brutal Traps and Enemies with Puzzles: While struggling to survive, you?ll have to face indescribable terror, cruel traps, and sly mechanisms. Players can die in a trap all too easily, however, at times they can turn them against enemies.
  • In an Unstable World, Not All Horrors are in Plain Sight: The player is driven into a corner as the world distorts and warps according to mysterious and evil horrors. The scenery: hallways, walls, doors, rooms, buildings, and even nature, all transforming in real time based on the player?s actions. And the threats keep coming from all directions.
  • A Supernova of Horror: By setting one foot in this world weaved from lush backdrops, characters with personality, and a polished story, players will be sucked in, willing or unwilling, tension and anxiety rapidly mounting. When that fear is smashed and conquered, you can experience the bliss that can only be found in The Evil Within.

I wish the game was in a first person perspective.  I actually hope the setup is more like Condemned with minimal guns and minimal ammo. I know people are probably tired of the first person stuff but I really enjoyed how condemned played there's something way cooler about turning around with something right in your face instead of being behind the shoulder and away from you some if anyone knows what I mean lol

@DVONvX @Imperiacommando Uh, what's wrong with Killzone? Anyways, know what I'm tired of seeing amongst those I used to call fellow gamers? Self-entitled, pretentious pricks who rag on anything and everything that either isn't indie or doesn't conform to their elitist sense of what a game should or shouldn't be. And then espouse mindless drivel by comparison that is supposedly the greatest or one of the best games of all time. It's an opinion, you don't like it? Then do the world a favor and lock yourself away in a basement for the remainder of your years.

Seeing as Shinji Mikami, the man behind the game, has definitely changed the game industry (unlike you) with many of his ideas in the past (and still does with some amazing gameplay concepts i.e. Vanquish). I'm going to trust him on this one as well, additionally if Bethesda is getting behind the idea, then it must be worth checking out at least. After all, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is my favorite survival-horror game of all time. It had a better insanity-system than even Amnesia if you ask me (and CoC:DCotE was released YEARS before that game). Oh you like Eternal Darkness? Lots of people including myself thought that game was a joke and terribly implemented/programmed. Really doesn't hold up to the test of time very well. But guess what? That's an opinion, because plenty of people liked the game.

We've seen no actual gameplay trailer yet (which is what matters) and have no information about this game aside from who's making it, who's publishing it and what genre it defines. Jesus, if I let Amnesia's trailers or CoC's debut trailers define whether or not I should have gotten those games, then I wouldn't have bought them. Which would have been a major fuck-up on my part as those are great survival-horror games. Sure I've detested what's happened to the RE series since 4, but Mikami has proven on more than one occasion he knows what he's talking about/doing. Vanquish being one of those examples. So does his new IP deserve my attention at least? Definitely. We'll see if it's worth buying or not after some more definitive information and gameplay trailers are released. Because that's what a gamer does, looks at the game before considering buying it. Not making a bunch of asinine remarks when no one's seen what the actual game would look like or even be for that matter. When did this community become so fucking pretentious and elitist? Fuck.
